Below Grade Leak Investigation Observation at the AXIS San Jose 12-19-2011and 12-20-2011 Observations by Michael Hathhorn Waterproofing Engineer Webcor Builders Day one 12/19/2011 consisted of investigating the condition of the garage to determine locations to be tested. The surfaces of the walls of the garage were skim coated with a concrete product that appeared to have been applied after previous injections. This top coat was mechanically removed exposing the Shot-Crete wall. Harvey with Harvey Haynes and Associates made a determination of the locations acceptability for testing. Below are pictures of the pre-testing investigations: Note -- effervescence and mineralization samples being removed from one possible test location.
Day two (12-20-2011) consisted of the final selection of the test areas, eight locations were chosen. Following the determination of test locations core samples were removed. The diameter and depth of the core samples varied based on the intent of the testing and rebar locations. Rebar was located using a hand scanner. Cores were removed using a diamond abrasive tubular bit lubricated with water. After the cores were removed the voids created were patched by Harvey Haynes and Associates. Test location #1 -- B3 @ Space # 372-373: Harvey stated that this test location was chosen to show general condition of previous repairs.
Core sample -- The wet line shows the location of the crack in the test sample. Urethane grout was present in the crack; the grout was viewed with a 40 power gauging microscope.
Test location #2 -- B3 @ Space # 378-379: Harvey stated that this test location was chosen to show the condition of the rebar and to see if rusting had occurred.
Test location #3 B3 @ Space # 387 Harvey stated that this test location was chosen to determine if the crack had been previously repaired.
View of the core Outcome of the testing unknown. Urethane grout injection ports were visible in the test sample.
Test location #5 B3 @ Space # 357-358: The purpose of the test was not stated.
Test location #6 -- B3 @ Space # 348-349: Harvey stated that this test location was chosen to show if cracking was shallow (above the rebar) or deep (continuing beyond the rebar).
View of the test sample: Crack is shown the continuing the full depth of the core.
Test location #7 -- B2 @ Space # 282: Active leak exposed when the coating was removed at the test area. Harvey stated that this test location was chosen to expose the rebar at the test area.
Test sample no field conclusion was stated based on the test sample.
