Course Description This 3-week orientation workshop helps students be successful in college. Students practice using the Online Learning System (OLS), learn techniques to be successful in college, and identify useful university services and resources. Policies In every course at the University of Phoenix, faculty and students will be held responsible for understanding and adhering to all policies contained within the following two documents: University policies: You must be logged into the student website to view this document. Instructor policies: This document may be accessed from the student website.

University policies are subject to change. Be sure to read the policies at the beginning of each class. Policies may be slightly different depending on the modality in which you attend class. If you have recently changed modalities, read the policies governing your current class modality. Familiarize yourself with the UNIV/100 course page. Select the Course Overview, which is located in the Course Outline for UNIV/100 on the student website. Review the Orientation Workshop objectives, Orientation Workshop Syllabus, Instructor Policies, Orientation Workshop Completion Checklist, Student Orientation Videos, and the Glossary. Click on the topic links, and review the Materials section for each week. Be sure to read the Read Me First before completing the other readings, discussion questions, and assignments.

Read Online Learning System (OLS) Quick Reference Guide in the Week 1 Materials section of the student website. Be prepared to participate in class discussion. You are encouraged to contribute two substantive discussion messages to other students responses or your facilitators responses 4 days each week in the Main forum. Substantive messages must be related to the weeks topics and include new ideas, personal perspectives, and examples. Read the facilitators bio, which is located in the Chat Room. Refer to the facilitators bio as an example of how to write an appropriate bio. Post your own bio in the Chat Room.

Individual Assignment 1: Locate and Install Microsoft Word

Locate Microsoft Word on your computer. To do this, complete the following steps: 1. 2. 3. 4. Click the Start button. Select the All Programs option. Select the Microsoft Office option. Click the Microsoft Office Word program.

Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/student/office/en-us/default.aspx or download a free 60-day/30 day trial version at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/. Complete the following steps after you have installed and located Microsoft Word on your computer: 1. Open a new Microsoft Word document. 2. Type your name in the document. 3. Save the document as a .doc or .docx file type and title it: Week 1 Assignment 1, as shown in the following graphic:

To view a tutorial about saving documents, complete the following steps: 1. Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. 2. Click the Materials link on the Home page of the student website. 3. Under Week 1 Materials, select the Computer Basics Tutorial. 4. Select the Click to Play link below 5. Documents to view the tutorial. Complete the following steps to submit your assignment: 1. Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. 2. Click the Materials link on the Home page of the student website. 3. Under Week 1 Materials, click the link Read Me First to open the reading in a new window. Review the How to Post Assignments section. When you are finished reading, you may close this window or minimize it to return to the classroom materials page. 4. Click the Assignments link on the Classroom tab, as shown in the How to Post Assignments reading. 5. Click the Week 1 link from the Assignments box, and then click on the assignment title for Week 1 Assignment 1. 6. Click the Browse button in the Submit Assignment section and find the Week 1 Assignment 1 document you created. When you double-click on the Week 1 Assignment 1, your document automatically attaches and submits. View the OLS links, icons, and tools as you review the messages. Open a new Microsoft Word document. Copy and paste the following questions into the new Microsoft Word document. (If you need assistance with copying and pasting, refer to the instructions listed after the assignment.) List the steps you would take to access OLS. How do you access the Main forum? How do you access your Individual forum? How did you find the Orientation Workshop readings? Where must you post your assignments? Where do class discussions for participation take place? What do you need to do to read replies to messages in the Main forum? What steps would you take to reply to a message in the Main forum? How can you recognize a message posted by your facilitator? How can you identify a discussion question thread? How do you identify a message posted by you?

Answer each question within the new document you created. Save your completed Microsoft Word document and title it: Week 1 Assignment 2. Complete the following steps to submit your assignment: 1. Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. 2. Click the Assignments link on the Home page of the student website. 3. Click the Week 1 link from the Assignments box, and then click on the assignment title for Week 1 Assignment 2. 4. Click the Browse button in the Submit Assignment section. Locate the Week 1 Assignment 2 document you created. When you double-click on Week 1 Assignment 2, your document automatically attaches and submits. To copy and paste text, complete the following steps: 1. Highlight the desired text by holding the left-click mouse button and dragging the cursor over the text. 2. On the keyboard, hold down CTRL and C at the same time,

and then release them. This copies the highlighted text. 3. Move your cursor to the location you would like to paste the text. 4. On the keyboard, hold down CTRL and V at the same time, and then release them. This pastes the highlighted text. To copy and paste text on a Macintosh computer, follow the same steps as explained above, except hold down the Command key and C or V at the same time, instead of the CTRL key. Individual Assignment 3: Setting Preferences Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. Click the Discussion link on the Home page of the student website to enter the OLS. Complete the following steps to set your preferences and to create your online signature. 1. Click Preferences located on the left hand side of the screen directly below the Forums box. 2. Type your first and last name in the Display Name field. 3. In the Font Size field, select medium from the drop-down list. 4. In the Font Type field, select Arial from the drop-down list. 5. Click Yes to enable Auto Spell Check. 6. Click Yes or No for Compose message in the new window, depending on your preference. 7. Type your first and last name, your OLS e-mail address, and your time zone in the My Signature box. You may also add your phone number. Remember, the information displayed in your signature is visible to everyone in the course whenever you post. 8. Select All Messages from the Apply To drop-down list. 9. Click Save Preferences. 10. Enter your Individual forum and post a new message. Type Week 1 Assignment 3 in the subject line. Type This assignment is complete into the body of the message. 11. Post the message to your Individual forum. 12. Ensure that your signature block appears in your message. Day 6 1

In the Week 2 Materials section, click the Time Management Podcasts link and listen to all three audio podcasts. Write a 100 to 150 word response to the following questions, after listening to the podcasts. Post your response to the discussion question thread posted by your facilitator in the Main forum. What changes do you anticipate in your day-to-day schedule as you further your education? What strategies might you use to help balance the stress of school, your personal life, and work?

help you obtain your goals? Individual Assignment 1: Goal Action Plan Choose a goal you want to accomplish in the next 6 months that will contribute to your success at the University of Phoenix. Log in to the student website. Click the Materials link on the Home page, and then click the Week 2 topic link. Download the Goal Action Plan template from Week 2 Materials to your computer. For downloading help, review the Computer Basics Tutorial in the Week 1 Materials section of the student website. Complete all nine sections of the template to create an action plan for your goal. Save your Goal Action Plan and title it: Week 2 Assignment 1. Complete the following steps to submit your assignment. 1. Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. 2. Click the Assignments link on the Home page of the student website. 3. Click the Week 2 link from the Assignments box, and then click on the assignment title for Week 2 Assignment 1. 4. Click the Browse button in the Submit Assignment section. Locate the Week 2 Assignment 1 document you created. When you double-click on Week 2 Assignment 1, your document automatically attaches and submits. Individual Assignment 2: Time Log Log in to the student website. Click the Materials link on the Home page, and then click the Week 2 topic link. Download the Time Log template from Week 2 Materials to your computer. Open the Time Log template and list the activities you usually accomplish in one day. The schedule may be in 30-minute or hourly increments. Be as specific as possible and include time for study and homework. Save your Time Log and title it: Week 2 Assignment 2. Complete the following steps to submit your assignment: 1. Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. 2. Click the Assignments link on the Home page of the student website. 3. Click the Week 2 link from the Assignments box, and then click on the assignment title for Week 2 Assignment 2. 4. Click the Browse button in the Submit Assignment section. Be prepared to participate in class discussion. You are encouraged to contribute two substantive discussion messages to other students responses or your facilitators responses 4 days each week in the Main forum. Substantive messages must be related to the weeks topics and include new ideas, personal perspectives, and examples. Remember, your initial responses to the discussion questions are required assignments in this orientation. Locate the Week 3 Materials section. Click the Responsible Borrowing Video link to watch the video. Because you have discussed options for how to pay for college with your financial services representative, you know that you must make wise financial plans, and, if necessary, borrow responsibly. Write a 100 to 150 word response to the following questions, after viewing the video. Post your response to the discussion question thread posted by your facilitator in the Main forum. What does responsible borrowing mean to you? What strategies, resources, and options do you have to minimize student loan debt? What change, if any, will you make to your education financial plan as a result of watching this video? Day 5 1

Write a 100 to 150 word response to the following questions. Post your response to the discussion question thread posted by your facilitator in the Main forum. Summarize what you learned in this Orientation Workshop. How will you apply what you learned in this Orientation Workshop to your educational, personal, or professional pursuits? Provide relevant personal notes and observations, such as anything discussed in this Orientation Workshop, that you want to learn more about or that you may want to receive further training or practice with.

Individual Assignment 1: University Library Search

Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. Click the Library tab from your Home page to access the University Library. Click the University Library link that is located below the Library tab. Select the General Resources link that is located below Library Resources. Select the EBSCOhost link. Enter at least one of the following phrases into the Search field: options for repaying student loans or options to pay for college. Select the search mode Find all my search terms. Enter the publish dates January 2010 to January 2011. Then click Search. Locate two articles on either topic and read the articles. To read

the articles, click on the title, HTML Full Text, or PDF Full Text links. Write two one-paragraph summariesone for each articlein a single Microsoft Word document. Include the following information at the end of each summary (you may obtain this information from the article full text view by clicking on the title of the article): The name of the author of the article The year the article was published The title of the article The title of the publication in which the article appeared The volume and/or month of the publication, if available The date you retrieved the article from the database

Save your document and title it: Week 3 Assignment 1. Do this after you have completed the above steps. Complete the following steps to submit your assignment. 1. Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. 2. Click the Assignments link on the Home page of the student website. 3. Click the Week 3 link from the Assignments box, and then click on the assignment title for Week 3 Assignment 1. 4. Click the Browse button in the Submit Assignment section. Locate the Week 3 Assignment 1 document you created. When you double-click on Week 3 Assignment 1, your document automatically attaches and submits. Individual Assignment 2: WritePointSM Paper Log in to the student website at https://ecampus.phoenix.edu. Click the Library tab, and then click Center for Writing Excellence. Click the Submit a Paper link that is located under Writing Tools. Review Exploring the Center for Writing Excellence, located in the Week 3 Materials section, if you need additional help. Submit your Microsoft Word document from Week 3 Assignment 1 to WritePointSM. Click the My Papers link to view your papers status. Click the WritePointSM link next to your paper when your results are ready. Save your results from WritePointSM and title them: Week 3 Day 4 1
