Update to USB Driver Support on HPUX 11iv2 August 6, 2009

Introduction HP is providing an update to the USB support on HP-UX 11iv2 which contains the following enhancements: USB 2.0 hi-speed (EHCI) capability at runtime DVD write capability Support for additional hardware IRC Support

Please read this entire document for important information on installing and using this new functionality, some changes in the USB information presented to users, and other patches required to use USB with other functionality such as Integrity Virtual Machines and Integrated Remote Console. The initial patch released with the new driver was PHKL_37814. This has now been superseded by PHKL_39269. PHKL_37814 should no longer be used.

Supported Mass Storage Hardware HP-UX is an enterprise operating system and is supported on enterprise servers. Accordingly, official support is limited to those USB devices which are of use in such an environment. Optical devices supported: Internal multibay inserts for rx 2660, rx3600, and rx6600 External multibay I and multibay II cradles with supported inserts HP dvd1040e 20x Super Multi DVD Writer iLO/vMedia usage for optical drives and iso files Flash drives supported: HP Drivekey II 256Mb HP 4GB c450w USB Flash Drive There is currently no official support for USB hard drives or USB tape devices. HP IP Console Switches/KVM Support With this patch and KVM firmware 1.3.25.0 or later, KVMs are supported using either the 3XXXXX or 4XXXXX series adapters. vMedia through KVMs using supported mass storage devices is also functional. With earlier KVM firmware, only the 3XXXXX series adapters are supported and vMedia through KVMs is not supported. Integrated Remote Console Support using iLO IRC is supported with the introduction of patch PHKL_39269. In order to use IRC with the X server, patch PHSS_39257 must also be installed. USB Hub Support The HP-UX 11iv2 USB-02 driver does not officially support hubs. While certain hubs may function correctly, others will not. In particular, full or low speed devices attached to high speed hubs will not function. At this time, hub support is only provided in the HP-UX 11iv3 USB-02 driver. Delivery Mechanism The USB driver subsystem is no longer be provided as an ISU product. Instead, it will be a part of the core HP-UX offering. Accordingly, this new support is delivered via patches. The primary patch used to make this transition and deliver the new USB functionality on HP-UX 11iv2 is PHKL_39269. It in turn has co-requisites on several other patches. In order for PHKL_39269 (and therefore the new functionality) to be operational, there can be no version of the USB-00 ISU product on the system earlier than version D. (USB-00 version D is empty of any code and simply depends on PHKL_39269.) There are therefore two ways to install the new USB driver subsystem: A) One can install without using USB-00 version D. To do that, one needs to retrieve all the required patches from the patch hub and also to remove USB-00 from the system entirely. Use the command swlist USB-00 to determine what version (if any) of USB-00 is installed on your system. So, to recap using this method, enabling the new functionality is done by: 1) swremove x auto_kernel_build=false USB-00 (if it is installed on your system) 2) swinstall PHKL_39269 and its co-requisites Note that you cannot use this method when running under the CDE environment. B) One can install USB-00 version D and the patches from the September 2008 Application Software Release for 11iv2. In order to do this, one selects USB-00 version D from the Application

Software disk and it will in turn select all the necessary patches. In the course of the installation, it will also remove all earlier versions of USB-00. Then install PHKL_39269. Special Installation Instructions for Users of rx8640 and Integrity Superdome If you are installing USB-00 version D or PHKL_39269 on an rx86X40 or Integrity Superdome, the USB drivers may not be built into the kernel unless an A6869/Obsidian or AD307A was present when the system was initially installed. When you later wish to take advantage of the USB capabilities of these cards, you must ensure that the USB drivers get built into the kernel. To do that, 1) Install PHKL_39269 or USB-00 version D 2) Execute the command kcmodule hcd. If the result indicates that the current state is static, then you do not need to do anything else. The drivers are already built in. Otherwise proceed to step (3). 3) Execute the command kcmodule hcd=static. This will build the USB drivers into the kernel. 4) Reboot the system (installing the card(s) if not already installed) New ioscan Presentation The USB related output of ioscan as well as the hardware paths and their meaning are different once these patches are installed and the new USB functionality is enabled by the removal of older versions of USB-00. The new details are described in a companion white paper entitled Understanding HP-UX 11i v2 and v3 USB ioscan under the USB-00 in the HP-UX 11iv2 section of the Operating Environments area of http://docs.hp.com. General Usage Notes 1) When a new USB mass storage device is added at runtime, it will be recognized by the system automatically and will show up in ioscan. To create the device special file, you must run insf. insf will see that there is new mass storage hardware and create the necessary device special files. 2) Because of the dynamic nature of the USB bus and the devices on it, it is possible that the association of device special files to actual USB devices may change in certain circumstances. a. When you disconnect a USB device at runtime and reconnect it to a different port, the device special file will be different (and in fact may need to be created using insf as described above). b. When you put a new USB device into a port previously occupied by another device, the new device may have the same device special file as the old one did. c. If you change the configuration of USB devices attached while a system is running and leave any of those changes in place across a reboot, the mapping of device special files to USB devices may change. For these reasons, it is always advisable to check the mapping of device special file to USB device before using it to make sure you are accessing the device you desire. 3) When you upgrade to this new version of the USB driver, you may wish to remove obsolete device special files from your system to avoid confusion. 4) No more than 16 USB devices can be attached to a given system at any one time. 5) Ensure that all optical media used is clean and undamaged. Otherwise, I/O errors may result in missing data or other failures. 6) Before you detach any USB device from the system or remove media from an optical drive, make sure you umount any file systems using the device and that any IO to the device has been halted. DVD-write Usage Notes DVD-write capability is supported with write capable DVD drives with the following provisos: DVD+R and DVD+RW media are the only media types supported.

There is no Dual-Layer support at this time. Writes must be closed single session. We do not support Multisession capability.

Compatibility with Integrity Virtual Machines The use of USB as virtual media for HPVM virtual devices will cease to work after these USB patches are installed on some versions of a VM Host. This limitation is lifted with the release of patches PHSS_38297 and PHSS_38298 for HPVM A.03.50. If you install PHKL_39269 on a system which already has HPVM guests configured and a USB DVD is used as a backing store for a virtual DVD in one or more of those guests, you will very likely need to modify the mapping from the virtual DVD to the real USB DVD before the guests will start. You will get a sequence such as: # hpvmstart -P goldvm5 HPVM guest goldvm5 configuration problems: Warning 1 on item /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0: '/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0' backing device does not exist. These problems may prevent HPVM guest goldvm5 from starting. hpvmstart: Unable to continue. You can do an ioscan to identify the new path to the DVD and execute an hpvmmodify command such as the following to rectify the situation (assuming /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0 is the new path to the USB DVD): hpvmmodify P goldvm5 m dvd:scsi:0,0,1:disk:/dev/rdsk/c2t0d0 This situation occurs because the new USB driver uses different hardware paths and device special files than the old driver did. Updating HP-UX After Installation of these Patches Updating from HP-UX 11iv2 to a later version of HP-UX 11iv2 if you have not installed USB-00 version D No unusual USB related messages will be output during the update process. However, when the update is completed, you will have version C of USB-00 installed on your system and the new USB functionality delivered by these patches will be disabled. To re-enable the new USB functionality after the update, you must remove version C of USB-00 using the swremove command and run swconfig x reconfigure=true x autoselect_dependencies=false PHKL_39269. Updating from HP-UX 11iv2 to HP-UX 11iv3 prior to the HP-UX Software Release for March 2009 if you have not installed USB-00 version D No special actions are required to update to 11iv3. Please note, however, that after the system is updated to 11iv3, you will no longer have the enhanced USB functionality described in this memo. To obtain this functionality, you need to install PHKL_39407 and its co-requisites. Please refer to the white paper for this patch entitled Update to USB Driver Support on HP-UX 11iv3. This may be found under USB-00 in the HP-UX 11iv3 section of the Operating Environments area of http://docs.hp.com..
