Power Plant Cooling Water System Analysis

Feasibility Evaluations, Conceptual Designs, Site Modifications

ENERCON is an engineering, management and technical consulting firm with a Client list that includes a considerable number of electric utility companies in the United States and abroad. ENERCON has been providing engineering services to the US commercial power fleet for over twenty years. In-depth partnerships with industry allow ENERCON to formulate innovative solutions, which support engineering, training, management services, crisis management, operations, maintenance, and licensing/regulatory affairs. ENERCONs engineering team is experienced in all phases of intake structure studies, design, analysis, Clean Water Act (CWA) 316(a/b) regulations and modifications. ENERCON has been involved in numerous intake water studies. For each of these projects ENERCON was responsible for preparation of the study, presenting new concepts and performing the engineering analysis required to determine the optimal solution. ENERCONs circulating water intake iimprovement studies iinclude work t t di l d k completed at Diablo Canyon to resolve heavy debris loading issues, as well as CWA 316(a/b) work recently completed for Entergy, SCE, PG&E, and PSNH. ENERCON has extensive experience iin id tif i evaluating, and selecting identifying, l ti d l ti intake technologies to meet sitespecific constraints. ENERCON utilizes state-of-the-art analytical tools, including computational fluid dynamics and Performance Evaluation of Power System Efficiency software, to predict g p the long-term effects of potential intake modifications.

ENERCON: Providing a comprehensive solution for 316(b) compliance ENERCON has extensive expertise in resolving each step of compliance with CWA 316(a/b) regulations across the domestic commercial power fleet, including considerable work at both fossil and nuclear power stations. CWA 316(a/b) regulation varies by state and includes the review, selection, and implementation of closed-loop cooling (or equivalent alternatives). ENERCON has the industry experience and technical knowledge necessary to provide a comprehensive solution for compliance with CWA 316(a/b) regulations regulations.

Project: San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Study on Conversion to Closed-Loop Cooling ENERCON performed a comprehensive assessment of the conversion of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station to closed loop cooling. A detailed conceptual design for implementation of closed loop cooling was provided, as well as detailed cost assessments. The cost estimates include initial capital cost (design/procurement/ installation), ongoing O&M costs, and associated operating losses. Project: Feasibility Assessment and Conceptual Design of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Intake Marine Mammal Protection ENERCON has been selected to identify and evaluate marine mammal protection designs to determine the best, and most cost effective, technological solution that meets the California Water Boards requirement that all existing power plants with an offshore intake install large organism exclusion devices.

Project: Solutions for Managing Heavy Ocean Debris Loads at Diablo Canyon Power Plant ENERCON evaluated available d b i removal l d il bl debris l technologies to determine the most cost effective technological solution to allow continued plant operation under worst case debris loading conditions. A phased approach to the debris removal solution defined in the study is currently being implemented, using ENERCONs technical specifications, modification packages, and construction details. Project: Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Cooling Tower Addition ENERCON has partnered with Marley/SPX Cooling Technologies on numerous projects, from feasibility studies and detailed conceptual designs, to final design and implementation. SPX routinely subcontracts ENERCON as their engineer of choice on major cooling tower projects, including the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station cooling tower addition project.

Expertise: Computational Dynamics Software

Fluid

ENERCON utilizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to predict the flow dynamics resulting from cooling tower operation / cooling water intake modification in an efficient and cost-effective way. CFD provides detailed information on flow patterns patterns, turbulence, flow rates and multiphase flow and often serves as a preliminary basis for modeling available technological solutions. Expertise: Performance Evaluation of Power System Efficiency ENERCON utilizes a P f tili Performance E l ti of Evaluation f Power System Efficiency (PEPSE) model to benchmark the analytical performance of the plant against measured data to provide an accurate summary of the plant performance expected after conversion to closed-loop cooling. PEPSE is used across the power industry and is the standard analytical tool to model what if scenarios to determine system what if impacts of altering power plant operation.
