Note: Attempt all questions and all subparts together.
Assume suitable data if missing.
Ql.
a. What are the different methods for deriving the element stiffness matrix of a problem?
Explain anyone with a suitable example. (3.5)
b. What do you understand by Interpolation Function? Derive the interpolation function for a
3-node element with 2
nd
node at the center of the element. ' (3.5)
Q2.
Assume that the local global displacements were found for the truss element shown in fig. 1
as U2 = 0.0567; V2 = -0.0027; U3 = 0.0027; V3= 0.0047
Determine the nodal axial displacements for element which is connected from node 2 to 3.
(Locally the direction from node 2 to node 3 is the positive axial direction)
Take E= 200000 psi and A= 0.1 inch

Q 3.
The bar system as shown in fig2 consists of 3 bars. The first bar length L I, the second L2,
and the third L3+L4. The force at the joint of bar I and bar 2 is zero (P=O). The force at the
end of the bar system is Q=400 lbf. There is a force acted at the point in the bar 3 with R=
100 lbf. The bar element allows only force at the end of the element and therefore, we have to
divide the bar 3 into two elements. The other data is shown in table given below:
Element No. ito i E, psi A, in" L, inch
1 1 to 2 10000 2 10
2 2 to 4 5000 1 12
3 I to 3 8000 2 12
4 3 to 4 8000 2 10
j
