Radioactive materials were found in some Japanese products such as spinach and milk. Radiation from Japan has traveled to the United States, but the traces were not harmful. Lea Chang Asst. Feature Editor At a magnitude of 9.0, the Sendai earthquake and its aftershocks shook the northeastern coast of Japan on Friday, March 11. The incident led to a number of devastated cities and overheating nuclear power plants. This was the largest recorded earthquake in Japanese history and one of the five strongest in the world. The resulting ten-meter-high tsunami waves from the quake caused even more damage than the earthquake itself and took down electric generators and nuclear reactors in Japan. The damaged power plants caused radiation levels in Japan to shoot up, and Prime Minister Naoto Kan encouraged civilians to stay indoors to avoid exposure to radioactive material. Radioactive materials were found in some Japanese products such as spinach and milk. Radiation from Japan has traveled to the United States, but the traces are so little that they were deemed harmless. Similarly to last years BP oil spill in the United States, the Japanese are having problems containing the radiation from the reactors. Power plant officials also admit that they should have acted more quickly to [Please see AID on page 3]

Robotics Team Competes

BUILD: The match was open to the public and was free of charge. Numerous awards and prizes were given to the winning teams, each recognizing different achievements. Vivian Tang Contributing Staff Writer Team Sprocket, Diamond Bar High Schools robotics group, placed first in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Robotics Competition at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California, from Thursday, March 24, to Saturday, March 26. It was their first competition of the season. Approximately 1,500 teams from all over the world competed for a spot in the championships in the Los Angeles Regionals. Every year, the organization chooses a new game for the teams to compete and participate in. This year's game was LOGO MOTION. Logo motion was a fun game played by two alliances, each consisting of three robots. Every team had to hang as many inflated tubes on pegs [as they could] and deploy minibots at the end of the game, explained junior team member Shannon Fan. The match was open to the public and was free of charge. Many different awards and prizes were given to the winning teams, each recognizing different achievements. Scholarships that ranged from $1,000 to $153,000 were given as well. Team Sprocket president senior Brandon Sim commented, I hope to see the team continue to thrive and succeed in their engineering and science endeavors.

Students Participate in Blood Drive

GIVE: All donors signed in and read a pamphlet regarding health concerns. All donors were taken into blue stalls where participants were required to share their health history. Connie Ma Contributing Staff Writer Diamond Bar High Schools American Red Cross arranged an on-campus blood drive, giving both students and faculty members the opportunity to donate blood on Wednesday, March 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. When I saw that we got a lot of signups like this, it made me feel really accomplished because I knew it was for a really good cause. All the blood that we got can help out someone in need, stated senior American Red Cross club president Bethany Sun. Certain requirements had been set up to ensure the safety of all the donors. Students over the age of 16 were able to donate blood only when they had parental permission. Students 16 and under were not allowed to donate. All participants had to be over 110 pounds, and depending on the donors height, some volunteers had to weigh more. Donors received a voucher for two Los Angeles Galaxy tickets, a free t-shirt, and a gift certificate to Cold Stone Creamery. The blood drive was held in both the DBHS gym and the blood mobile parked in the amphitheater. Upon entry, all donors were required to sign in and read a pamphlet regarding

Yegge-Evans, Irene Genders, Lydia S. Ko, and Michael Osborne. They were chosen from a variety of different professions in order to ensure that different perspectives would be present at the event. Throughout the year, the Diamond Bar Court will have the opportunity to earn scholarship money based on their amount of participation in city events during their term. Headlee commented, I hope [all the girls that did not make court] come back and give it another try.

health and safety concerns. After, all donors were taken into individual blue stalls where participants were required to share their health history in a confidential interview. Prior to drawing blood, each student underwent a short physical, consisting of a complete blood count test, a blood pressure check, and a temperature check. A small blood test was taken to check blood type, and the blood was tested for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus as well as the hepatitis B and C viruses to ensure that infectious blood was not taken. The extraction of blood took approximatly 5 to 10 minutes. The donors can then visit the snack table where complimentary drinks and food were available. Donors were given the choice to either give a whole blood donation or an ALYX apheresis donation. A pint of blood was drawn for the whole blood donation, while two pints of blood were drawn for the ALYX apheresis donation. There were 180 participants at the blood drive, and the donated blood is estimated to save about 300 lives. Senior Coco Wang, a member of the American Red Cross, commented, I think it was a great opportunity for us to actually donate, because it was on-campus [which] involves more people. She added, I wanted to spread the word to others who wanted to donate. I appreciate everybody for donating.

Pro: Churchs Right to Protest

Ashley Ahn Feature Editor T h e We s t b o r o B a p t i s t Church has been actively protesting against institutions and groups who support homosexuality since 1991. Initially, the protests seem hatedriven, but the First Amendment rights protect the Churchs freedom of speech and cannot be ignored. Recently, the Church has begun exercising its rights by holding demonstrations outside the funerals of soldiers. After countless controversial protests, many people are suggesting that the local police enforcement put an end to the demonstrations. The government cannot be allowed to control when this right is effective and when it is not. T h e We s t b o r o B a p t i s t Churchs appearance at a soldier s funeral may seem immoral, but they do not violate any federal laws. Their protesting has caused them to appear in court numerous times for being sued. For example, their presence at Matthew Snyders funeral, a soldier killed in Iraq, caused heightened amounts of tension between the deceaseds father and the church. Although the group was sued for loudly protesting at the funeral, the Church won the case because they did not violate any laws. The First Amendment explicitly states that the government cannot interfere with the right to freedom of speech nor to peaceably assemble. Although many argue that the protests are vulgar, they are lacking the obscenities that would infringe upon their First Amendment rights. The same principals that gave them the right to protest then still applies now. Although assemblers may pose as an inconvenience, they are only thatand until they begin creating a violent environment during their protests, no legal action can be taken. The Church is often

find their signs to be offensive, the First Amendment also protects the rights of these protestors from being incarcerated. Stripping any American of the right to freedom of religion would only give other religious groups reason to fear that this freedom of religion is no longer relevant. The Churchs protestors are not causing a threat to the people around them. They are simply expressing their ideals and exercising the rights entitled to every American. It is the governments decision to rule what is and is not constitutional, but extreme caution should be taken when pertaining to disagreements that are faced with groups like the Westboro Baptist Church. The laws that have already been established should be protected at all costs. If the rights that are given to us are not always in effect, the liberty and freedom that America was built on will follow suit and begin to crumble.

Con: Churchs Right to Protest

Stephanie Cota Staff Writer T h e We s t b o r o B a p t i s t Church, located just outside Topeka, Kansas, has begun spiteful protesting based on a strong belief against homosexuality. These particular religious followers are protesting outside of funerals for those killed at war with offensive and hate-driven signs, some of which claim that these soldiers died as punishment for Americas tolerance of homosexuality. Although the first amendment offers a limited protection of their freedom of speech, the church must be stopped from verbally abusing the deceased and their families and unfairly punishing them for their sexuality. After one protest at the funeral of Lance Corporal Matthew Snyder, who died in Iraq in 2006, the church members were sued in the case Snyder vs. Phelps for invasion of privacy and deliberate infliction of emotional distress. The church won this case by claiming they have protection under the first amendment. Although the court ruled that the church had the right to protest, the church is not doing this peaceably. The manner in which the protesters assemble is often hateful, provoking, and offensive to the families for their loss. Although these protests take place at a distance from the funerals they are protesting, their disdainful riots still cause suffering to the families who have gathered together to mourn for those who have died. Their protesting is riotous and inflicts an incredible amount of stress to these families. Choosing funerals as a location to protest is extremely tactless and ignorant, while imposing upon the rights of the deceaseds family. Not only is the protesting with offensive signs a violation of the families privacy, a law that should be more effectively

questioned about the validity of the that they claim protects them, but they have the undeniable right to say anything they believe is relevant as long as they are doing so peacefully. The freedom of speech is one of the most important rights that Americans hold and taking away this right would be silencing the voices that the country has been built upon. The Church members have just as much of a right as the mourners of the deceased to express their thoughts and feelings at the sites of the funeral. The protesting outside of soldier funerals may seem unpatriotic, but the Supreme Court ruled that hateful protests against the military are protected under the First Amendment in March 2011. Taking away these rights would lead to issues confronting the First Amendment on a larger scale. The Church carries around signs inspired by their religious beliefs and although people may

enforced to prevent such demonstration, but it is also disrespectful. People should have the right to mourn the death of a loved one in peace without any disturbances from othersallowing this church to impose their beliefs on others by rioting violates this right. To accommodate these rights, many states have passed laws prohibiting such activities during funerals or burials. This law should continue to discourage any type of demeaning demonstrations near funerals in every state. The churchs protests are founded on the religious beliefs that it teaches, not constitutional rights. The first amendment offers the right to this religious freedom. However, it does not give them the right to demand that others think the same way. We live in a nation founded on religious freedom and equality, yet these protesters try to get others to believe what they

believe and denounce those who do not. The members of this church have the right to speak freely, but their speech is intended to force their religious beliefs onto others, which is undemocratic and violates the rights of these families under the first amendment. Although it may be constitutional to assemble, the Westboro Baptist Church is not doing so peacefully. The churchs demonstrations are still impertinent and hurtful to the families of fallen soldiers. These families should be given the right to mourn their loss in private and without any disturbances. These callous protests should be considered an assault to innocent soldiers who have dedicated their lives to serve America. Their right to speak freely is overruled and outweighed by what should be the families right to their own privacy and the respect they deserve to bury their loved ones in peace.

When President Barack Obama was appointed president, he announced that the Guantanamo Bay prison would be shut down by 2010 yet, a full year later the prison is still standing. The United States Government uses the facility in Cuba to hold prisoners of war from Afghanistan and Iraq. The prison is plagued with horrible living conditions where the prisoners face torture with beatings, broken glass, and sexual assaults. When Obama realized that he would miss the deadline that he set, he negligently retracted his promise that the detention center would close down. Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum at the beginning of December 2009 and made plans to transfer the prisoners to Thomson Correctional Center of Illinois. However, he is still stalling the trials of the Guantanamo prisoners that would speed up the closing of this unwanted prison. More than a year has gone by, and Obama has yet to live up to his promise of seeing Guantanamo Bay closed down. The Obama administration cannot avoid the necessary closing of this prison any longer. At first the actions of programs like Amnesty International, which protested the prison, were influential, but their intentions to close the prison cannot be lost as time passes. Obamas lack of commitment is allowing this immoral detention center to stay standing. On March 7, 2011, some progress was finally made when Defense Secretary Robert Gates issued an order stating

More than a year has gone by, and Obama has yet to live up to his promise of seeing Guantanamo Bay closed down.

that the continuation of the military commission process in Guantanamo Bay was in effect. The promise that was made is based on plans that will take effect too gradually to show any immediate results. By January 22, 2010, the Guantanamo Review Task Force issued that 126 out of 240 detainees were to be transferred to other facilities. The other 114 detainees are considered too dangerous to be transferred and are scheduled for prosecutions that have yet to happen. Sufficient and temporary campsites have been prepared for the prisoners specifically so that they can face their trials before the Guantanamo military commissions, but they are not being used to help expedite this process. There is no reason to slow down the closing of this prison; they must take immediate action as soon as possible to pacify the citizens. If not, further continuation of Guantanamo Bays existence will only result in more havoc within the administration and more criticism from the public. Guantanamo Bays closing is long over due. If Obama leaves the prison, it will not only hurt American morale, but it will permit the cruel treatment of the prisoners. No prisoner should be forced to endure the poor living conditions that exist in Guantanamo Bay. Not only does the prison encourage inhumane treatment but maintaining the prison is a huge burden to Americas economy. The termination of Guantanamo Bay should be among Americas top priorities so that the U.S. government can finally begin to uphold its reputation as a clean and civil country.

Roads serve as the bridges of the nation, interlacing countless networks of transportation and connections between different human interactions. Thus, it comes as no surprise that between all of the traffic and commotion, motor accidents occur, frequently endangering the lives of teenagers. As an attempt to curb accidents on the road, The Safe Teen and Novice Driver Uniform Protection, or STAND UP, Act was introduced to Congress in order to reduce the number of teen motor accidents. The STAND UP Act is attempting to reduce the number of these deaths, which is currently the leading cause of death for teenagers nationwide, through a series of additional requirements added before a teenager can receive an official state drivers license. The act should be strongly encouraged so that a quick enactment can be possible and thousands of adolescents can be protected by the simple proposal of adjusting current state licensing laws. Within the last five years, over 40,000 deaths of teenagers were caused by motor accidents, a figure too large to ignore. The STAND UP Act, if passed, would establish minimum federal requirements for state Graduated Drivers License laws and encourage states to make helpful adjustments within the three years following its enactment through annual grants of $25 million. Studies have estimated that every year, the costs of teenage motor accidents add up to about $30

million. Through less costly federal grants, the money spent on these avoidable tragedies can be redirected into more appropriate areas of interest. The STAND UP Act is seeking safety, security, and protection for both teenagers and adults on the road. New laws need to be enforced to prevent these reckless deaths and injuries. The act proposes a three-step process for licensing: t h e l e a r n e r s p e r m i t , t h e intermediate stage, and after, a license with no restrictions. A minimum age of sixteen years will be required to begin this process and only those who are eighteen years of age or older will be able to obtain a full license. By increasing the age required for a full license, the roads will become safer as teen drivers will be forced to mature before receiving privileges. The act also places several other restrictions on night time driving, use of communication devices, and passenger number to ensure that these extra variables will not contribute to nor cause disasters on the road. The STAND UP Act is a necessary effort to reform the clearly faulty state licensing system that plagues the nation. By enacting laws that delay issuing of an official license by a couple years, states will be able to see a reduced number of victims in motor tragedies and a cut down on motor crash costs. Ultimately, the enactment of the STAND UP Act is crucial in order to protect the lives of teenagers and provide safer roads for all generations in America.

Scholar Supremacy
Laura Moftt Asst. Feature Theme Editor The Former Majority Association for Equality recently announced that they will grant $500 dollar scholarships to any male resident of Texas who can prove he is at least 25 percent Caucasian, has a Grade Point Average of at least 3.0, and can demonstrate both nancial need and a commitment to education. Although the group is only providing a small scholarship to a minority in Texas that needs nancial aid, various anti-racism groups have risen in protest of FMAFE, claiming that they are promoting white supremacy. Protestors ignore the fact that the scholarship foundation does not support white supremacist views; they have been harassed because they provide a welldeserved nancial aid to those that cannot gain it through other race specic scholarships. The FMAFE is being accused of racism simply because they choose to provide a scholarship to a particular demographic. This is not a reason for them to be punished and it is clear that they must be allowed to proceed despite protests. Although most people assume that Caucasians are a majority undeserving of assistance, census numbers from February 2011 show that whites in Texas only make up 42 percent of the population, while Hispanics account for nearly two-thirds. The organization has been repeatedly accused of having white supremacist intentions, however, it is simply providing scholarships to a minority, which many similar organizations are allowed to do. Scholarships given out for other minorities, such as the Black Men of Grenada Scholarship, provide to students of a particular racial group and have not been met with protest. The FMAFE is attempting to provide an opportunity for a minority just like any other organization who provides scholarships; yet they are receiving criticism because of the minority they selected to help. Ending this scholarship would be depriving the white minority of the same opportunities that are offered to other ethnic groups in a similar situation. Despite the fact that Caucasians are a minority, they have been denied scholarships that could help change current rates of child poverty among white children in Texas, which ranges from seven to 12 percent. These rates show the clear need for a scholarship to be in place in order to help these students achieve their goals. In contrast to the numerous scholarships available to African Americans, there are only three scholarships nationwide that are available to white males. It is undeniable that while scholarships are available to many minorities, Caucasianspecic scholarships are unfairly restricted. The FMAFE has been called a white supremacist group by protesters, yet their website clearly states that the goal of the scholarship is to assist young Americans seeking higher education who lack opportunities in similar organizations that are based upon race or gender. The FMAFE demonstrates diversity in its nine-member volunteer board and the scholarship only requires a very low percentage of Caucasian lineage. They allow people with a small amount of white lineage to earn the scholarships rather than requiring that the applicants be 100 percent Caucasian. This group is clearly not focused on promoting white dominance; rather, they are providing a necessary scholarship to a group of individuals who need nancial help to succeed. This scholarship was established to benet a minority in Texas and is completely right in their aim to provide white males with nancial assistance. There is no reason why white males who need financial aid should not be provided with this necessity. Instead of criticizing the group for the minority that they chose, this group should be commended for providing a scholarship that this particular minority clearly needed.

The United States Fights for Libyas Rights

Justin Park Contributing Staff Writer Over the past 42 years, Libyans have been victims of the uncontrollable tyranny of their de facto leader, Colonel Muammar el-Gadda. In February 2011, the citizens of this small African nation nally erupted into a bloody rebellion in an effort to cease Gaddas perverse reign. Infuriated over the upheaval, Gadda ordered his mercenaries, policemen, soldiers, warships, and even military aircrafts to eradicate the protest by slaughtering all the demonstrators. The United States of America must provide the Libyans with the military support they lack and help to end the despicable regime of Gadda. The most effective way to help the U.S. military impede the civilian-targeted assaults of the Libyan army is to institute a no-y zone, a territory over which aircrafts are forbidden to y, over Libya. Enlisting Libya under the no-y list would demilitarize the country from Libyas air forces and put a stop to Gaddas bloody air attacks of various cities and neighborhoods inhabited by the insurgents. Gaddas ruthless air strikes on oil-rich complexes have also resulted in a major depletion of Libyas oil supply, causing a setback in the nations once-successful petroleum industry. This oil crisis ultimately aggravated the worldwide price of crude oil, inating the cost up to nearly four dollars per gallon. United States is doing what is right by authorizing military defense against Gaddas air attacks and must continue to apply this aggressive pressure against Libyan government. Some government ofcials emphasized that an establishment of a no-y zone over Libya would require the U.S. to launch a military raid of Gaddas air forces in Libya, which could potentially fuel a political battle between the two nations. However, as a country that has the ability to put a stop to Gaddas rule, the U.S. military cannot be hindered by the fear of going into war in order to protect the civilian population of Libya. Currently, the civilians are suffering from deprivation of sufcient ammunition, advanced equipment, and welltrained ghters all of which Americas military can provide. It is the responsibility of the U.S. armed forces to offer aid and support to the rebels by providing troops and equipment so that the Libyan civilians can begin to physically suppress the heavy tolls of Gaddas violence on the rebels. Intervening in Libya may also serve as a signicant threat to the dictator and would intimidate him to an extent where he may voluntarily step down from his throne. According to the latest count, the U.S. currently possesses over a million soldiers with vast quantities of the worlds most powerful and advanced equipment, whereas Libya only has approximately 119,000 active soldiers and largely obsolete ghting equipment. The Arab League, a regional organization consisting of twenty-two Arabian countries, has also recently suspended its alliance with Libya, due to Gaddas refusal to cease his attack on the countrywide demonstrators. With Gaddas army completely isolated from any international resources, it

is beyond doubt to say that the dictator will become vulnerable under U.S. military superiority. The United States military response to Libyas massacre has been nearly non-existent until the no-y zone, as the U.S. only expressed sympathy on this incredibly life-threatening matter. With a variety of military options available, including the route on no-y zone, it is only logical for the U.S. to continue intervening in Libya with strong military support. Politicians cannot rely soley on verbal threats to end the violence in Libyathey must take action. In a situation where thousands of innocent lives are at stake, the United States military cannot delay its response any longer to save these Libyan lives that are in danger.

Better Services for Those Who Want Them

Marcel Boubion Asst. Editorial Editor When people from other cities think about Los Angeles, they think about celebrities, highrise buildings, and shopping sprees. But amidst all of the glamour there lurks trafcthe seemingly endless and mindnumbing trafc. Even though the congestion of Los Angeless most used freeways is getting worse day by day, no one has considered the stress of the glamorous, who are constantly faced with the inconvenience of public freeways. Despite this problem, there is no option to pay more taxes for better public services that should be exclusive, like public freeways or police response teams. Every rich citizen in Los Angeles is stuck dealing with the less fortunate everyday. However, now that Los Angeles is on its way to allowing people to pay to drive in an exclusive lane on the freeway, the rich can hope for more elite benets that are too expensive for everyone to afford. The logic used to create the idea for more personalized benets is simple: if a group of people with a larger income can afford to pay more for something, they obviously need it more than everyone else. And this is the same logic that will feed countless ideas that will serve as the rst steps towards removing the oppression of the upper-class citizen. For years, everyones most hated season was tax-season, only now it can be a special season where people can take pay for what should be theirswell, if they can afford it. The list starts with improved living conditions that the rich will receive. The benets do not have to stop with freeways. In fact if the upper-class can gather enough supporters, the benets would only be limited to the size of their bank accounts. The next thing that should be changed would be our local police and re departments. Higher-paid citizens could afford faster ambulances, fire trucks, and faster responding policemen. At a time when our countrys economy is causing hundreds of government p a i d employees to be laidoff, it only makes sense to allocate the best aspects of these services to those who are willing to pay more for them. A true democratic nation is one that allows people to be better than others not just in the comfort of their own home, but everywhere the government can control. This should extend to both small and large-scale government controlled items

easier transportation. Essentially, drivers with a lot of money can pay more to get to their higherpaying jobs while those with less money can still lose a portion of their even smaller paycheck for a less efcient service. At rst, it may seem like it would split up society into several socialsegregating tiers but it is a trivial sacrice when compared to the

of interest. From city parks to national parks, people of all ages can learn the importance of separating socioeconomic class. The simplest aspects of these parks could be improved. Better swing sets and improved monkey bars can be made available for the children with parents who are willing to pay, while national parks can sanction the most preserved areas for just a few extra hundred dollars. Americas taxes should not give everyone access to the things that richer people are willing to pay for. If the right advice is followed, America can introduce itself to a new style of life, one where a government can systematically split up the society into two different classes that enjoy two drastically different grades of service. This way, America can encourage those who do not have money to pay for the things that everyone should have. This country can no longer be distracted by the outrageous idea that everyone should be given services for just paying their meager taxes, like Obamas ridiculous healthcare plan. If we can get rid of plans like that, then maybe we can just create two entirely different governments: one for the poor, who obviously do not like nice things, and one for the rich, who do.

Cupcake Wars

With spring break just around the corner, every Diamond Bar High School student should know where he can eat to his hearts content. The Bulls Eye sent one of its staff members into two bakeries to test their respective cupcakes and to determine which shop is capable of creating the better cupcake.

Eric Lee Business Manager Asst. News Editor

Dont be

DISCOURAGED

The inside of the bakery itself is nowhere near as cute as Sprinkles Cupcakess. The furniture in most Famous Cupcakes branches is rather plain, with none of the obviously careful thought that went into its competitors design. However, the quality of Famouss cupcakes far outweighs its rather bland taste in dcor. The cupcakes themselves are near perfect soft and spongy, with the ideal, not-too-sweet icing on top. But beware if you visit Famous Cupcakes towards the end of the day, you are much more likely to receive a stale cupcake that does not do their freshly baked ones justice.

Everything about Sprinkles Cupcakes is greatexcept for the cupcakes themselves. The staff is always friendly, the online ordering is extremely efcient, and the general ambience of the shop is warm and open. However, the reasonably uffy and moist cupcake is merely passable. The frosting on top is much too sweet. At least three dollars apiece, these costly confections are denitely not worth the price. Also, the lines outside of the bakery can extend up to a half hour wait. Sprinkles does not deserve its ridiculously hyped-up reputation.

Track and Field Has Tough Luck

Andrew John Editor-In-Chief The boys and girls varsity track teams ran into their first major setback this season as they experienced their first lost to Diamond Bars rival, Walnut High School. The Brahma boys fell short at 63-73, and the girls lost 39-88. Nevertheless, the meet was filled with many newly set personal records, which foreshadow an auspicious remainder of the season. We had a great meet. We just had bad luck, commented head coach Neil Desai. Bad luck essentially sums up the upsetting loss for the Brahmas. Despite the many DB athletes that set new personal records at this meet, Walnut matched with many personal records of their own. Senior Kevin Ferris hit a new record for the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 41.53 seconds, but the Walnut athlete who took first also set his own personal record at 41.47, outrunning Ferris by only a few fractions of a second. There were little things we got beat in that were normally better at. And Walnut kids got [personal records] in events they didnt expect. They got lucky, stated Desai. In spite of the setbacks Diamond Bar experienced, the team still performed well. For the boys, the jump squad swept all the places in both the long jump and triple jump, scoring 18 points for the team. Junior Kevin Chen outjumped the rest of the previous personal record to hit his first-place 20-feet-four-inch jump. Sarah Dresser Contributing Staff Writer Senior Ryan Ma is an all-around stud in sports and academics, balancing swim, the vice presidency of Key Club, and participation in the Science Olympiad Team. Swimming is a large part of Mas life, making him spend ten hours a week in the pool as well as the five extra hours demanded of captains. From his four years on varsity swim, Ma discovered his strengths and weaknesses. [Leading the team has] shown me how I am responsible at times and how I sometimes get impatient, something that I can work towards fixing. In addition to swim, Ma is involved in clubs and other activities. He devotes six hours a week to Key Club as Vice President. He often shows his leadership qualities by being the best role model he can be. I lead through my actions rather than words and hope that others will follow, added Ma. Ma studies two hours a day for the Science Olympiad team competitions. The team won fourth in regionals this past February, while he took sixth in solo building competitions. This year, the Science Olympiad team will be continuing to State Championships on April 10. Even with his extracurricular activities, Ma manages a 4.0 Grade Point Average with a schedule full of Advanced Placement classes. As of right now, Ma is unsure of his collegiate destination but he has recently been accepted to the University of California, Berkeley. Its what you do, not where you go that matters, noted Ma. With his ambitious endeavors close to an end, Ma feels he has left his mark on DBHS as an outstanding student and leader. Ma is a well-rounded, studious athlete and a budding star to watch out for as he heads towards a prosperous future.

A 6-1 win against Diamond Ranch High School on Wednesday, March 23, and a tough 2-1 loss against Bonita High School on Friday, March 25, gave the Brahmas a 2-1 league record, 4-5 overall. Wednesdays victory displayed all of Diamond Bars strengths. Starting pitcher junior Henry Omana went four innings, struck out five, and allowed only one run. At the plate, senior Josh Viloria had the best hitting game of his high school career. In addition to scoring two runs, he batted 3-3 with a solo homerun, a double, and an infield single. I just want to go out there and play baseball, and I ended up having one of the best games of my life, commented Viloria. Not far behind, senior Kenny Mathews went 2-3 with a single and a double and also scored two runs. We played well. Our team was ready to play. Boys Golf Remains Undefeated

The poor weather and course conditions greatly affected the players on all three teams. Many Brahmas shot high scores compared to previous play, and one player also shot a season high. Despite its slow start, the team was able to come back and get the win. The course was playing difficult. But we were able to hold off, and we were fortunate enough to get the win, said coach Ty Watkins.

Despite the unfavorable conditions on Tuesday, March 22, the Diamond Bar boys golf team led by a score of 202-209214 over Rowland and Walnut, respectively, at Royal Vista Golf Course. This win improved DBs overall record to 9-0 and league record to 5-0. Sophomore Jason Chen led with a strong score of 35. The shots I hit were going the way I wanted. I started off poorly, but fortunately enough I was able to rally back that day, said Chen.

We have been playing very well. Weve had some really good matches.

First League Win

The Brahmas were disappointed in their play at Royal Vista. There was no specific area of concern, but the team has been sporadic in its play. The players shot under 182 twice this season at Diamond Bar Golf Course, but struggled to play well away. The Brahmas came into Tuesdays tri-match undefeated in league. We have been playing very well. Weve had some really good matches,

said Watkins. As league champions set to defend their title, the Brahmas hope to improve their play. But the team struggles when playing on unfamiliar courses. Like most golf teams, being consistent is the most important thing. Weve been very good at home, but not away, said Watkins. Poor weather conditions resulted in the cancellation of the match against Diamond Ranch on Thursday, March 24. The team looks forward to its next match against West Covina High School tomorrow, March 31, at South Hills Golf Course.

Colene Eng Staff Writer Diamond Bar High Schools varsity boys and girls swim teams hosted a meet at Las Flores Park against Bonita High School on Wednesday, March 23. Though weather conditions were unfavorable, both varsity teams pulled off a victory. The girls team received a score of 111 to Bonitas 55 and the boys finished 101-69. With this win, the Brahmas were able to start off their new league on a good note. We did great as a team despite the cold weather and the heavy rain that started about halfway through the meet. We had good swims throughout and some personal bests to boot, commented senior captain Ryan Ma. As the meet went on, the temperature continued to rapidly decrease and the wind picked up. However, the swimmers were successfully able to overcome this obstacle as they all performed well in their respective events. Junior Brianna Hom managed to get points for her win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:16.49 while freshman Gregory White came up victorious in the 200-yard individual medley after an intense neck-to-neck race, setting a time of 2:15.79. All levels had their heart in their races and gave it all they got, said junior Yalda Ghader. Bonitas team and our team were pretty evenly matched so we definitely handled this meet well.

The rest of the season looks promising with a good chance at winning league.

Junior Bennett Yuan swam to a first-place victory for the 100-yard butterfly, at 56.57 seconds. In the 200-yard freestyle, the Brahmas placed first and second, with junior Chris Katoh finishing first in 1:49.16 and Ma following close behind with 1:51.08. Senior Caitlen Busch, junior Melinda Wang, and sophomore Bianey Munoz placed in a first-secondthird fashion with times of 28.75, 26.87, and 28.07 seconds, respectively. As a team, Id say were a pretty strong team. We dont have as much depth as I would like, but we do have some outstanding young athletes, said coach Patrick Murphy. The team also managed to do well in the relay events. Both the boys team and girls team swam to victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Hom, j u n i o r s Brittany Ting and Crystal Wang, and sophomore Connie Tsai received a time of 4:18.55, a full seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Junior Sean Kao, Katoh, Ma, and Yuan finished at 3:40.48, five seconds ahead of the competition. The rest of season looks promising, with a good chance at winning league. Our main obstacle is Walnut High as they have a very good team, commented Ma. The Brahmas still have a long season ahead in order to maintain their perfect record, and they are optimistic about winning in the new Hacienda league. Their next dual meet is today in an away meet against West Covina High School.
