Solid Waste Management

Disposal is only the last step
Present rate of solid waste generation in Pakistan is around 60,000 Tons/day; no comprehensive data exists on the composition and generation rates of Industrial Solid Waste as it is handled by each industry separately. Pakistan recycles more extensively and efficiently than developed countries, not as a result of heightened civic sense but by incentives derived through simple economics. Unfortunately, we do not have any set of NEQS specific to Solid Waste. A proper industrial waste management program, backed by legislation is needed to prevent the degradation of natural environment and to protect public health. It would involve identification of waste, proper labeling, explicit display of danger sign, systematic inventory, risk management, tracking, safe storage and guidelines for safe transportation. Treatment techniques include hazardous landfills, deep-well injections, pyrolyses, composting, and high temperature incineration. Since these techniques are generally expensive, it is always better to prevent the generation of waste which can be achieved in many different ways. We hope that you must have worked out your own plans for solid waste management. Let us do it together.

How you generate different types of Solid Waste

Reasons for Increased Level of Solid Waste

Incoming Material

Prolong exposure to weather conditions over its shelf life (SW 1) Inventory Management is weak

Unpacked

Packing material (SW 2) More inputs are being used Un-utilized material and not fit for use empty vessels and items (SW 3)

Utilized

Housekeeping and dispensing system inadequate

Product

Low/bad quality Rejected product (SW 4)

Process of value addition is inefficient and ineffective

Material Other than Products

Un-useful byproduct, discarded equipments (SW 5)

Weak Maintenance Department
