SDLP pitching for
dissident support
A ROW has erupted after Nigel
Dodds accused the SDLP of los-
ing its moral compass over
the imprisonment of a convicted
bomber and an IRA gunman.
The DUP MP for North Belfast
described the nationalist partys
statements calling for Old
Bailey bomber Marian Price and
Gerry McGeough to be freed from
prison as a cynical strategy
designed to garner a few extra
votes.
Mr Dodds has also attacked
the party over the appearance
of SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood
at a paramilitary funeral in
Londonderry last month.
However, the SDLP has hit
back saying they reject violent
expression of political belief and
that their continued campaigning
is human rights driven.
In a statement released
yesterday, Mr Dodds said:
It appears that over the
course of the last few weeks,
the SDLP has made a
transparently obvious pitch for
support within the dissident
republican constituency.
Each of these incidents in
isolation is offensive enough,
but taken together they form a
pattern.
It is apparent that the
leadership of the SDLP has
decided that in order to revive
their fortunes, they will pander
to the agenda of dissidents.

New animal health
initiative takes shape
PLANS are moving ahead for a new industry led animal health initiative to eradicate BVD from the Northern Ireland cattle herd. BVD is a viral disease which can signifcantly reduce production on livestock farms. The Ulster Farmers Union and members of the NI Cattle Health Steering Group (CHSG) have agreed a number of proposals for a province wide eradication programme. Speaking on behalf of the working group, UFU president Harry Sinclair said that in recent weeks signifcant progress has been made in securing funding commitments from both the dairy and red meat sectors to help
resource and drive this initiative forward. We are also working closely with the Department of Agriculture to consider their input to this progressive project and we are very pleased that the minister has now agreed in principle to match the contributions committed by all the relevant stakeholders in the industry to get this initiative off the ground, he continued. We are aiming to have a voluntary BVD eradication programme in place by 1st January 2013 and in tandem we will also be tackling other production diseases such as Johnes. The industry led NI animal health working group are also working closely with Animal Health Ireland who are co-ordinating BVD eradication in the south of Ireland, with the joint target of eradicating
BVD from the island of Ireland. A key aspect of the proposals in Northern Ireland will be the establishment of a new industry controlled company that will take forward the direction and implementation of animal health projects throughout Northern Ireland. Minister Michelle ONeill said she very much welcomes the fact that there is an increasing desire within industry to tackle these diseases. I believe that there is real potential to improve the competitiveness of the sector through tackling production diseases like BVD, she continued. I am therefore keen for my department to help get this initiative off the ground. My offcials have been working
closely with the steering group on this initiative and to provide advice. Of course, buy-in by farmers will be key to the success of the programme. The minister endorsed the groups proposals for a voluntary eradication programme for BVD from January 2013 and added: I am encouraged to hear that private investment is being sought to support the new approach. As experience elsewhere has shown, commitment from industry to funding such initiatives on production diseases will be critical to their sustained success. I also welcome the steps to establish collaborative links with industry in the south. Taking an all-island approach to production diseases will help support trade throughout the island.
