Chapter 1: Overview | Purpose

Chapter 1
Overview

1.1

Purpose

This document provides preliminary information about the LSISS9252 bridge interposer. The LSISS9252 interposer board features the LSISS2520 device, which provides SAS-to-SATA bridging functionality. The LSISS9252 interposer supports communications between two SAS ports operating at up to 6Gb/s with one SATA port operating at up to 6Gb/s. For maximum performance, each port independently sends and receives data at the highest link rate achievable. For example, a 3Gb/s SATA drive connected to the LSISS9252 interposer board appears to a SAS2 host as a 6Gb/s SAS drive. The LSISS9252 interposer provides a board-level product solution for customers who want to offer low-cost SATA drives in a SAS system. The LSISS9252 interposer board uses a 2.5-inch form factor and supports full-speed SAS 2.0 and SATA 2.5 bridging functionality. The LSISS9252 interposer is currently available as a standard product. The following figure shows front and back views of the LSISS9252 interposer board. The pen gives a general idea of the size of the board.

SAS and SATA Connections

The LSISS9252 interposer board supports a 2-MB flash device. The LSISS2520 device uses a 25-MHz reference clock, which is provided by a 25-MHz fundamental mode crystal. The LSISS2520 device provides a GPIO pin that controls the +5-V and +12-V power to the HDD. This pin drives a FET control circuit that switches the power to the HDD. On the LSISS9252 interposer board, GPIO0 is dedicated for the FET control circuit. The embedded firmware controls the toggling of the FET_CTL signal. One or more attached initiators can direct the firmware to toggle the FET_CTL signal by issuing the appropriate Mode Page command (see the LSISS2520 SAS-SATA Bridge System Application Reference Manual for details).

HDD Power Control Circuit

2.6.5

HDD Presence Detect

Some applications require an HDD presence detection signal, routed to the midplane, that indicates whether a HDD is installed in the corresponding slot. The LSISS9252 interposer board allows you to optionally connect the SATA connector P4 to the SAS connector P4, as shown in the following figure.

If you select this option, the HDD pulls the HDD_PRESENCE_DETECT signal to ground when it is installed, and it is open when no drive is installed. The midplane includes the appropriate sensing circuitry to use this signaling method.
2.6.6 HDD Spin-Up Options

One or more attached initiators can direct the firmware to initiate the HDD spinup by sending a NOTIFY(ENABLE SPIN-UP) primitive or by issuing a START STOP UNIT command (see the LSISS2520 SAS-SATA Bridge System Application Reference Manual for details). You can use an assembly option to configure the SATA HDD for either staggered spinup or immediate spinup when the power to the HDD is turned on. Use pin P11 on the SATA connector to set the spin-up method. Leave P11 unconnected (floating) to set the HDD for staggered spinup. Connect P11 to ground to set the HDD to spin-up immediately. Staggered spinup is the default configuration. The following figure shows the spin-up control options for HDD P11.

Chapter 2: Functional Description | Functional Descriptions

NOTE: Because SATA P11 is a bidirectional pin that acts as both Activity and Spin-up control, the Activity and Spin-up functions are coupled. The embedded firmware controls the Activity LED. You can use the LED in different modes, such as static or different flash rates, based on different sources and events: for example, drive state, drive activity, or error conditions. One or more initiators can configure the LED characteristics by means of the appropriate Mode Page (refer to the LSISS2520 SAS-SATA Bridge System Application Reference Manual for details). The following figure shows the configuration for midplane activity LED control.

Midplane Activity LED Control

The Activity signal is buffered from the LSISS2520 device to the midplane. The buffer ensures that SATA pin P11 does not go above 2.1 V, and it protects the LSISS2520 Activity pin from potentially higher voltages that could result if the midplane LED were connected to 5 VDC or higher. By default, the ALTA_ACTIVITY_N signal is active low. When the SATA port is not ready, the LED is OFF (driven high). When the SATA port is ready and idle, the LED is ON (driven low). When the SATA port is transferring frames, the LED is blinking. You can specify an assembly option to configure the ALTA_ACTIVITY_N to be active high.
2.6.8 SAS and SATA Precharge

The SAS and SATA connectors on the LSISS9252 interposer contain the following precharge pins for the power supplies: P3: 3.3-V precharge pin P7: 5-V precharge pin P13: 12-V precharge pin The interposer does not include any series resistors for precharging. The SAS and SATA connector precharge pins limit the inrush current that occurs during a hot-plug operation. The precharge pins are physically longer than the normal power pins, so they make contact first during a hot-plug. A small value resistor in series with the precharge pins allows onboard capacitors to be charged at an R-C rate before the remaining pins make contact.

Because the LSISS9252 interposer board is mated to the HDD, the drive sled is the hot-pluggable assembly. The SATA connector does not need precharge resistors because the HDD is not hot-plugged into the LSISS9252 interposer. The LSISS9252 SAS connector interface does not include precharge resistors, since they are also not generally included on SAS HDDs.
2.6.9 Reset

The LSISS9252 interposer includes a system supervisor circuit that monitors the 3.3-V supply and provides a reset signal to the LSISS2520 device when necessary. The device provides a minimum power-on reset pulse width of 140 ms. The following figure shows the LSISS9252 reset/POR circuit.

Reset/POR Circuit

Because of space limitations, the LSISS9252 interposer does not contain any onboard LED indicators. See Section2.6.7, Midplane Activity LED Control Options for midplane indicator options. The LSISS9252 interposer board generates all required voltages from the +12 VDC provided by the SAS connector. Power supply sequencing is implemented onboard. For safety, each regulator provides short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown. There is a fuse on each +5-V and +12-V power rail input. The following table and figure show the voltage and current requirements and the power supplies. The consumption data is preliminary. The final detailed circuit design will include additional information from the respective vendors of the components for more accurate figures.

Power Supplies

The 12-V input supply powers the LSISS9252 interposer board. The interposer then regulates this voltage down to supply the LSISS2520 device.

2.7

Compatibility

The SAS interface is compatible with the ANSI Serial Attached SCSI standard, version 2.0. The SATA interface is compatible with the SATA specification, version 2.6. The LSISS2520 device is also compliant with SCSI/ATA Translation (SAT) 2.0.

2.8

Constraints

The LSISS9252 interposer board is targeted to the 2.5-inch HDD form factor. The interposer attaches to the drive vertically (i.e., the interposer board plane height coincides with the thickness of the drive) in order to occupy as little space as possible in a drive tray. You can also use the interposer board in a 3.5-inch disk drive tray by using an appropriate bracket to securely hold the interposer board.

2.9

World Wide Name

All LSI interposers are assigned a World Wide Name (WWN) at manufacturing time. The SAS addresses for the two SAS ports are derived from this WWN assignment. SAS addresses are derived such that WWN addresses need to be allocated in blocks of 4. For example, the following relationship must be satisfied: (WWN & 0xffffffc) == WWN The SAS address for Port 0 would then be WWN+1, and the SAS address for Port 1 would be WWN+2. The WWN assignment resides in the nonvolatile configuration data for the interposer. Although it is possible to delete this assignment, LSI strongly advises against doing this. If you delete the assignment, it is possible that an embedded firmware algorithm could create duplicate WWN assignments.

Customization Options

The following table lists alternative customization options for the default LSISS9252 interposer board design settings. The middle column lists cross-references to descriptions of the settings elsewhere in this document Contact the LSI Marketing group to request functions other than the specified defaults listed here. The board name is LSISS9252-01.

Table 5:

Customization Options for LSISS9252 Interposer Board Default Board Design Settings See Section Customization Options Alternative Option: Staggered Spin-Up is disabled on the SATA drive. When the SATA drive is powered up, the out-of-band sequence (including COMWAKE) completes immediately.

Enable Staggered Spin-Up on the SATA drive. Section2.6.6 Withhold the COMWAKE to the SATA drive at powerup. When either of the two SAS ports receives a NOTIFY(SPIN-UP), send the COMWAKE to the SATA drive to allow it to spin-up. Section2.6.7 The LSISS9252 interposer drives the midplane Activity-LED through the SAS connector pin P11 with buffered driver.

Alternative Option #1: The SAS connector pin P11 is not driven at all (open). Alternative Option #2: The LSISS2520 device drives the SAS connector pin P11 directly, without buffer. NOTE: The LSISS2520 device does not tolerate voltage levels higher than 3.3 V. Alternative Option #3: The SAS connector pin P11 is driven from the SATA drives P11 with buffered driver. Alternative Option #4: The SAS connector pin P11 is directly driven from the SATA drives P11 without buffer.

Set Activity-LED Polarity as active low in order to work Section2.6.7 properly with the LSISS9252 LED buffer circuit. Enable HDD Presence Detect. SAS connector pin P4 is Section2.6.5 tied directly to SATA connector pin P4.

Alternative Option: The Activity-LED is active high. Alternative Option: Both the SAS and SATA connector pins P4 are tied to ground.
