INTERIOR DESIGNER
LEO LINO M. ALMERIA, FPIID, a native of Tacloban City, graduated from the Philippine School of Interior Design (PSID). He is an active member (College of Fellows) of the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID). He started his designing career in 1978 under the guidance of the famous Edith L. Oliveros, PIID. In 1987 he became an Associate Interior Designer of Russell Emmert, ASID and furniture designer for E.M. et cie in Portland, Oregon, U.S.A. Upon his return from the United States in 1988, he started his own design office, the Leo Almeria Design Studio (LADS). Lately, he has been specializing in product designing employing indigenous materials which involves design development and manufacture of home and office furniture and accessories like lamps, trays, boxes, etc. Mr.Almeria has taught design courses at the College of St. Benilde, De La Salle University, and at the Philippine School of Interior Design. He has also been invited to give talks and participate in many design seminars and conventions here and abroad. His recent speaking engagements included lectures at the Malaysian Furniture Fair 2005 (Kuala Lumpur), the 10th American Hardwood Southeast Asia and Greater China Convention (Beijing, China) and the International Furniture and Design Objects Fair in Bangkok, Thailand. Last October 2, 2002, The Philippine School of Interior Design on its 35 th Anniversary accorded him a tribute-exhibit in recognition for his achievements in the field of interior and product design. Likewise, on January 15, 2006, An Waray Party List and the People of Region VIII (Leyte-Samar/ Biliran) awarded him the honor as Most Outstanding Leyteo in acknowledgement of his achievements in the field of Fine Arts (Interior Design). Mr. Almerias projects have been regularly featured in major dailies and magazines like Mega, My Home, Sense and Style, Blu Print and the Philippine Tatler. He contributed for the magazines Womans Home Companion and Design & Architecture. Recently, his works were included in the books Tropical Interiors published (Periplus), Real Home Ideas (Summit Publishing Co., Inc.) and At Home with Filipino Art and Artists (Anvil Publishing, Inc Santa Barbara Publishing Corp.).

Lesson/s Learned: I learned something about how designers thinking should work and respond to certain problems of certain space. Interior designers should know how to say yes or no to the client. Whenever the client demands more than the size of his/her space, the designer should let them understand the incompatibility of that idea and must employ a more suitable solution.

Work Activities Performed: Another rush submission today for the Riego residence, I was asked to correct all the wrong positioning of the windows with the elevation and ceiling plan.

Lesson/s Learned: I learned a lot of things today. I learned how Sir Leo Almerias principle works on the space, providing breathing spaces for the look or the design. These breathing spaces provide a more regular look on the interior. Another thing is that the power layout and RCP should go together as on only one drawing. That is based on the architectural manuals and requirements for easier and convenient understanding of plans.

Work Activities Performed: We, together with my OJT co-student, performed site visits with our mentor Sir Leo Almeria on 4 different sites located in 1 subdivision. After that, we are tasked to draw manually in the studio the perspectives of the residence assigned to each of us.
Personal Observations at the Project Site: During the site visit, I recognized Sir Leo Almerias signature on designing starting from the big windows symmetrically arranged, the floated ceiling with cove lights, the built-in cabinets that continually expands the walls appearance without cuts, the stairs that has its first 3 to 4 steps expanded and big mirrors on T&B that has built-in sinks with maintenance purpose. I also observed the door frames and the door entrances with faux finishes.
Lesson/s Learned: I learned a lot about handling under construction projects. On the spot revisions, drawings and mocking up are also possible on site. I also learned the carpenters ways of making ply woods look expensive by applying false finishes from the floor boards to other wooden material to make it look like real hardwoods. I learned the advantage of considering feng shui in house planning especially on subdivision developers that are selling their designs on potential home owners.

Work Activities Performed: Before the site visit, I finished all the drawings needed for the meeting at the site. I finished the reflected ceiling plan with power layout first then I finished the stairs and its elevation with the guide of my mentor.
Personal Observations at the Project Site: There are some problems on the construction due to the late submission of the drawings. This resulted in advance construction proceedings without notice from the interior designer causing so much revisions.
Lesson/s Learned: I learned about the technical drawings of the architect with different specification on plans compared to interior design. I also learned about the use of a SOLAR HART, an environmental water heating system that uses solar disk to work. I learned its efficiency and disadvantages on recent architectural design application.

Lesson/s Learned: I learned a lot from this experience. I learned how the design should go with the space and its owner. I learned a lot form Sir Leo Almerias vision of design: the symmetry, bwelo, the cabinets, big windows, frames to accessories and finishing touches. I learned how great interior designing was as a profession. As our mentor says, ..you will never be a good interior designer if you dont know how to look on every details even the smallest of it; and AutoCad will never help you grow as a designer. Designer should look on a bigger wider picture of the problem for a more effective solution. This would help you look on all the sides, corners, every angle and architectural features that could give you an idea of what would be the right solution appropriate for you and your clients interest. If youll use AutoCad all of your designing life, you would end up as a draftsman.

This was a furniture collection from Sir Leo Almerias house that was used in his project at Tacloban City. I did the manual shop drawings for all the following furniture shedule including 2 daybeds and 4 cabinets.

This was one of the bedroom for Castelo II residence, located in Villa Carmen subdivision. After we had our site visit, our mentor gave us the task of making the manual perspectives for the architects and developers.
This was the dining area of Castelo II residence, located in Villa Carmen subdivision. I had so much revision on this including my awkward angle of the perspective, the blinds and the wall dcor and accessories.
This was the master bedroom of Castelo II residence, located in Villa Carmen subdivision. This one is my favorite because this room was used by our mentor to show and teach us how to do his own version of manual perspective.

This was the Langanlangan Sports Bar project of LADS located in Tacloban City. Still under construction, we designed the whole planning and layout.
This was the Toshiba Lettered L Canteen project of our office. Being my first rushed project that was given and submitted the same day, I struggled using autocad faster with my bosss attention on me that was such a huge pressure.
This was the project I personally handled in our office, Atty. Ma. Rachel Riego de Dios residence at Quezon City. I cant count the times I made this with revisions from everyday updates from the site.
