What is a design portfolio?

A portfolio is a collection of evidence that represents architectural ideas, learning & achievement. A portfolio is kind of narrative tells story of your works and compiling any viewing essential to know your intended audiences. Portfolios require both the gathering and presentation of evidence and an element of critical reflection or commentary. This may either be integrated into elements of the portfolio, or be a separate element in its own right, in which the student "draws the evidence together into a coherent tale of learning, of sense made, of new ideas developed, tested and sometimes discarded"

The portfolio should demonstrate your knowledge of design and process. The depth and breadth of skills that you possess should be clear after the entire portfolio has been reviewed. - Jeanneane Wood, CMU Interior Design Faculty

Portfolios can demonstrate and market transferable skills, refresh your memory about activities, reduce interview anxiety, communicate high levels of interest and preparation, and reduce concern about misrepresentation of credentials. Define your objective What are you hoping to accomplish with the portfolio? Complete a personal career analysis What do you want to showcase? Analyze what you've done and brainstorm skills (technical/transferable), outcomes, and tangible evidence of these accomplishments. The tangible evidence can include the resume, formal letters of reference, informal letters from clients and/or colleagues, photographs, computer files, disks, video, credentials, statement of philosophy, event flyers, agendas, etc.

Why evidence of design process is essential in a design portfolio?

I always want to see examples of a job applicant's work from every step of the design process, including doodles, thumbnail sketches, renderings, everything. I want to get an idea of what it would be like to work with the applicant throughout a project. The final renderings are actually the least important part of the portfolio to me because they don't show the process. - Bryan Gailey, SDI-HTI: VicePresident
