Dare is a student-run fashion magazine founded by Gabriella Tam and Larissa Ho through their Senior Project. Fashion embodies more than how a dress or a pair of pants looks. Fashion represents a persons attitude, character and lifestyle. Dare hopes to inspire through - Presenting to the student body how the diverse cultural influences on fashion designs - Presenting upcoming fashion trends - Exposing students to different categories of fashion - Appreciating what fashion contributes to our lives - Using fashion to communicate with the student body

Step 1: Make a small loop at the end of your leather string Step 2 : Wrap the leather string with your linen cording

Step 5: Begin wrapping your first linen cord around each bead

Step 6: Continue wrapping each bead with the linen cord Step 7: Make sure youre wrapping tightly

Step 3: String several beads onto your second linen cord

Step 4: Tie your second linen cord (with beads) onto the leather

Personal Style with HKISs very own Emma Greis

HKIS senior, Emma Greis is no doubt to have a prominent sense of fashion. DARE magazine sits down with Emma to discuss how she developed her personal style, and influences that played a part during her High School years. DARE: So Emma, tell us what is your personal style? Emma: I think my personal style comes from how I wake up in the morning. So some days, I would wear my boots and my leather jacket, and some days I would wear a skirt, and some really girl accessories. It depends on how I feel that day. DARE: How did you develop your personal style? Emma: I definitely think it didnt start until last year, because that was when I had really decided that I wanted to do something in fashion. So I thought that I would have to step it up a bit. DARE: Do you have any fashion icons, or anyone who inspires you? Emma: Im obsessed with Alexa Chung. If only I could have her closet. And Im definitely in love with street style blogs; Ill just look through them and see if theres any outfit Ill try to put on. DARE: Do you have any favorite street style blogs you would want to share? Emma: I have a whole bunch such as Because Im addicted, The Man Repeller, Lookbook and many more. I think street style blogs definitely helped shaped my own personal style. DARE: Do you ever bother, or care about how you dress at school? Emma: Some days Ill be like Ill try on this dress, and some days when I have really little sleep, Ill just pull a pair of jeans and a shirt out. So it all really depends. DARE: Do you have any key pieces when you assemble an outfit?

Emma: Right now, I got a bunch of new chunky earrings, so Ive been trying to wear those more often. I also love wearing boots with anything. DARE: Do you have one favorite key item in your closet? Emma: hmmmprobably my furry vest! I can wear that with like anything such as a dress, or a skirtit can go with anything! DARE: Are you up to date with the current fashion trends, and do you follow them? Emma: I like to think that Im up to date with the fashion. When Im shopping, I try to follow the trends as much as I can. DARE: Our magazine name is called DARE Magazine; do you consider your own personal style as somewhat daring? Emma: Yes, if somethings trendy, and a little out of the box, then of course Ill wear it. I try to be daring at school. DARE: Where do you mainly shop? Emma: I love shops that are very trendy such as H&M, Zara, and online such as ASOS. But currently my closet is full of my aunts clothes she has a bunch of vintage pieces. I also love going to thrift stores. DARE: How do you accessorize? Emma: I think if Im wearing something boring, ill put on a chunky necklace or so. I also love wearing earrings as well. Designers inspired by culture

Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Rodarte, Donna Karen, Alexander McQueen, Michael KorsThe list goes on and on as more designers begin to design collections inspired by various world cultures including Chinese, Indian, Scottish, African, and Russian.

Jean Paul Gaultiers Fall 2010 collection was inspired by many different cultures. Known as an avant-garde designer, Gaultier decided to mix different key pieces from different nations. For example, one model wore an African-print turban, neon green tights, an A-line skirt, a peacoat, and red cowboy boots. Another model wore a babushka, a leather motorcycle jacket, a Masai necklace, a Mexican blanket skirt, yellow stockings, red tennis socks, and green platform sandals. As over the top as his collection may sound, Gaultier was able successfully to mix and match key pieces for his audience to compare and contrast the various cultures shown in this collection. Gaultier had also cast a diverse range of models for his runway.

Chanels Karl Lagerfeld is another designer who is often inspired by many cultures, including China, India, Moscow, and Venice. In 2009, Lagerfeld presented his Fall 2009 collection in Shanghai, and Lagerfelds inspiration was from the Chinese culture. This inspiration was made clear as the models wore garments including clothing inspired from Chinese terra-cotta soldiers, split-sided Qipao gowns, Mongolian tapestry boots, red silk cheongsams, and several takes on Communist Mao suits. In addition, Lagerfeld used the city of Shanghai as his background for his runway show. This collection was a way for his audience to remember the elaborate clothes people wore during old Shanghai in the early 1900s.

 Later in 2010, Lagerfeld designed for his cruise collection works inspired by the Venetian culture. As the models walked down a wooden beach boardwalk, they wore clothes that resembled gondolier stripes, the city flag, and Venices reflection from the water. The majority of the clothes included fine-knitted cardigans, striped beachwear accompanied with red and white striped wedge booties, and shimmery sequins. However, Lagerfeld still wanted to maintain the Chanel imprint on his clothes. In doing so, Lagerfeld included tweed jackets, tweed dresses, silk blouses and thin scarves in order to retain the classic-elegant-Chanel look.

Lagerfelds latest culture-inspired collection was for his Fall 2012 collection. This time, Lagerfeld designed a collection inspired by India. The runway was set to recreate a luxurious, extravagant, grand, and polished banquet table from Indias Rajasthan. As the audience sat around the banquet table, they were able to see the models wearing clothes inspired by Indias culture including long ivory silk scarves, side-draped dresses, tweed jackets, raw silk tunics, sheer paisley leggings, tweed A-line skirts, and silver embroideries. Overall, this collection was elegant, historical, and regal.

For their Spring-Summer 2011 collection, Rodartes design duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy decided to reminisce about their early childhood memories in California, and designed a collection based on their numerous trips to the redwood forests of Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey. Their memories from the redwood forests were reflected in this collection through the wooden heels with leaves and flowers, slim dresses belted with acorn belts, and dark-grainy-wooden patterned tunics. Colors that were most prominent included cream, gold, brown, blue, and white. In addition, the Mulleavy sisters also included porcelain prints as a way to mention the large Asian-American

 population in California. The collection as a whole was clever, intricate and thoughtful. Techniques included structured tailoring and draping. For example, all of the skirts were shaped like two petals and flowed down to the knees.

For her Spring 2012 collection, Donna Karen took a new turn and designed a collection inspired by her trip to Haiti. Previously known as a feminine, soft, and simple designer, Karens spring 2012 collection took a different take and included tribal prints and urban designs. Furthermore, Haitian artist Phillippe Dodar also inspired Karen as his paintings and designs were shown in her collection. The color palette included earth tones such as sand, brown, army green, citrus, and white. In terms of silhouettes, most of the dresses were one shoulder, tight, and body hugging. The jackets and vest were sleek and athletic, and the accessories included oversized wooden necklace and bangles.

Alexander McQueens Scottish roots were the source of his inspiration for his Fall 2006 collection. His sharp and perceptive tailoring skills were shown primarily in his coats and knee length skirts, and the majority of the prints were red and black plaid, reflecting the Scottish culture and heritage. Other pieces included knee high brown leather boots, black velvet dresses, laces details, and ruffle details that seep out of the sleeves. Overall, the runway show itself was poetic, raw, romantic, and elegant. American designer Michael Korss Spring 2012 collection was inspired by the African tribal wear. This was made clear when his models were seen wearing animal prints, djellabas (a traditional long Moroccan dress), hand dyed clothes, and crocodile cross body bagsall paired with knee-high gladiator sandals. His asymmetrical dresses were hand woven, his skirts were wrapped, and according to Nicole Phelps of Style.com, his sweaters were holey, as if they'd been stuffed into the bottom of a rucksack. Nevertheless, Kors was able to successfully design and present a collection

 that mixed African heritage with his signature pieces including his one-shoulder dresses and swimsuits.

This trend is beginning to become more and more popular, and is seen to have a prominent future in the fashion industry.

Personal Style with Mrs. Nolasco

HKIS humanities teacher Mrs. Nolasco is known have an extraordinary fashion sense. DARE magazine sits down with Mrs. Nolasco to discuss her influences and the development of her personal style. DARE: What are the three words that describe your style the best? Mrs. Nolasco: Eclectic, Sophisticated, I wear a lot of long skirts, Vintage. DARE: How did you develop your personal style? Mrs. Nolasco: Since Im 37, its taken a long time to develop my personal style. Ive always followed trends, but I also just wear what I like. As Ive developed and become more comfortable with my own skin and being an adult, I found things that look good on me. Even though I admire things high school students are wearing, I shouldnt be wearing that. Anything that looks nice! You see a color, you see a silhouette, and think about how that might work in your closet. I develop a lot of my style by taking inspirations from bloggers. DARE: Do you have any key pieces when you assemble an outfit? Mrs. Nolasco: Long skirt. I wear a lot of headscarf, a lot to do with the humidity in Hong Kong. Some heels, I like fun shoes. Another thing I do to assemble outfits is Pinterest! I love it. I 'pin' inspiring images onto my boards to get ideas for outfits.

DARE: Do you have one favorite key item that you must wear everyday? And why? Mrs. Nolasco: Not so much, I suppose thats seasonal. For a while, I was really enjoying wearing my cropped leather jacket. But of course its too hot for that now. Ive been wearing these Oxfords lately. Jewelry I suppose, but those change as well. Well, I guess I wear my Michael Kors watch a lot. DARE: Are there any fashion icons that inspire you? Mrs. Nolasco: I really look to bloggers. I used to read In Style magazine. Now, I look to blogs. I like street style blogs like Street Peeper. Hes got fashion models, designers on there. I also like The Shiny Squirrel. Another great street style blog is Mr. Newton. Aside from blog people, I like The Man Repeller. My husband says I dress like a man repeller. What have I done to deserve this, he says. There are certain models and Taylor Tamasi is the one I really like. DARE: How do you follow current fashion trends? Mrs. Nolasco: I look at people. I watch people. I look at you guys actually. Its fun working at high school because I can do that. And I look at the range of people walking around in Hong Kong. DARE: Would you like to share a few street style fashion blogs with us? Mrs. Nolasco: Street Peeper, Sartorialist, Face Hunter.

DARE: Where do you mainly shop? Mrs. Nolasco: I dont really subscribe to one look. So I dont really subscribe to one place for shopping. I love shopping at the markets because if you know where to go, what to hunt for, you can find some neat little things. Ive done a lot of shopping at Stanley market. Although the shops I used to like closed down. Other than that, a little bit of H&M and those big box stores. I love Etsy and a couple of women blogs I read who also have shops. One blog was Fancy Treehouse and another one was Steffys Pros & Cons. Dare: When did you start liking fashion? Mrs. Nolasco: I like clothes, I like make up. Its fun to dress up. I started to be conscious when I started to live here in Hong Kong. There are a variety of things to buy and look at. DARE: Our magazine is called Dare; do you consider your own personal style as somewhat daring? Mrs. Nolasco: Yeah, I think so. Even when I was your age, I didnt always follow along with what everybody would wear. I just wore what I liked. I remember coming back from a family holiday in Australia. One of the trends there was to have socks pulled up to your knees. I came back to school wearing socks up to my knees. I got a lot of looks but I liked it. Ive grown more confident to just wear what I like.
