MATOS ROAD PROPOSAL

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Many places in the world that have expansive soil and soft soil characteristics. This soil needs stabilization to be able to support load was on it. One method is to use by soil stabilizer. PT. Watukali Ciptama Capita is one manufacturer who developed a soil stabilizer to improve the performance of soil-cement. Soil stabilizer produced by PT. Capita Watukali Ciptama and we give named MATOS. Matos component serves to removal humic acid from soil particle surface. Removal humic acid used ion exchange method. Matos components will replace a component of the position of humic acid on the surface of soil particle. So that the bond between soil and cement are no disturbed by a layer of humic acid. Matos component that sits between the soil particles and cement to form cristally by utilizing the heat of cement hydration process. This crystallization process will continue after the cement hydration heat is lost by the particle underwater. Crystallization will fill in voids between the particles of soil, cement and Matos components. So that the composition of the soil-cement-Matos will be even harder if submerged in water. 2. STANDARD SNI 03-1742-1989 (AASHTO T 99-90) : Soil light density test method. SNI 03-2827-1992 (AASHTO T191-86) : Field density with sand conus equipment test method. SNI 03-1744-1989 (AASHTO T193-81) : CBR laboratories test method. AASHTO T144-86 AASHTO T135-76 ASTM D1632-63 ASTM D1633-63 : Cement Content of Soil-Cement Mixtures : Wetting and Drying Test of Compacted Soil-Cement Mixtures : Making and Curing Soil-Cement Compression & Flexure Test Specimens in the Laboratory : Compressive Strength of Moulded Soil-Cement Cylinders

3. MATOS ROAD APLICATION The pavement road is used for continued the traffic load to the sub grade. The pavement variety and dimension must be efficient and effective so that the sub grade could support the load and the descent which may happened in the save tolerance of the road. Sub grade is used to support the pavement load which came from the vehicles which step on the road. Because of that, the plan of the pavement road is very determined by the sub grade condition. The Public Works Department requires that the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) percentage of submergein water condition from the sub grade is 5% minimum and plasticity index percentage must be less than 15%.The problemis usually happened in rainy season with the wet road condition when the CBR is descent drastricly so that the road could not be passed by the vehicle. The pavement with MATOS will made the road which had a problem in rainy season could be used constantly. 1. Matos road composition Matos is a soil stabilizer which used to optimize the soil-cement stabilization. Picture 1 shows that the proportion of free compression strength of Matos driveway mixture was 228,6% increase compare with soil-cement mixture and 451% increase if its compare with the real soil strength. Matos soil stabilizer dissolved the humic acid on the surface of soil grain so that the cement could strongly bind the soil particle. In the other side, the humic acid-Matos reaction will form the strong 3 Dimension crystals (picture 2). Because of that the Matos road mixture had a high strong support value, and it did not through crack in the curing time and low permeability. The Matos road mixture composition is for every 1 m soil mixed with Portland cement (PC) 100200 kg added with 1 - 1,2 kg of Matos, depends on the soil type. In general, the soil which contains a lot of sand will need a bitter Matos and cement.

2. The superiority of Matos road as a pavement material. Matos road mixture had a CBR and a high modulus elasticity so that it could used as a road pavement as a replacement of layer stone for base and sub -base. The CBR precentage of Matos road mixtured is 80% - 200% and modulus elasticity value is beetween 500.000 1.250.000 kPa depends on the soil condition, portland-cement volume, and Matos which added to the mixture. The use of Matos-road mixture had advantages, there are: 1) The tension distribution at the sub grade is evenly distributed, so that the tension concentration will not happened like has happened at the application of sub base or base layer conventional pavement. 2) For the same layer thickness, the pavement Matos road layer had a better cooperation compare with the aggregate pavement layer. Picture 4 shows that the 25 cm thickness of soil-cement pavement layer had three times more cooperation than the aggregate pavement layer. 3) A better cooperation which has been explained at item 3 enable to use a thinner Matos road layer for traffic load and the same age design. Picture 3 shows the comparison between conventional pavement layer which used pieces of rocks for the base & sub base and Matos road layer. For the traffic load and the age of design which was planned, if its used the conventional pavement layer then the 20 cm (CBR > 50%) of base and 30 cm (CBR >20%) of sub-base will be needed, whereas if its used the Matos road pavement layer with 80% of CBR its just need a 20 cm thickness.

Picture 4. The Comparison load distribution between Conventional Pavement and Matos Road. 4) Different from the conventional pavement which had a reduction, the Matos road layer is precisely had more strength along with time, it is could be caused by the reaction of cement hydrationstill continue. Picture 5 shows the increase of the soil-cement layers strength along with time.

Picture 5. The Increase of soil-cement layers strength along with time. 5) Economizing on cost. The thiny Matos road pavement layer made an economizing on construction cost. The economizing was come from the material purchasing cost, the project realization process, workers, and the time of project realization which is more short. 6) Waterproof. Matos has a special characteristic there is water repelant. It is because the bond of soil Matos ionichas a higher bond energy than the soil-water bond. This water

resistant made the Matos road mixture did not had a power reduction caused by the water, while the reduction were happened by the soil-stabilizer mixture especially the used of polymer material. 7) Minimalized the used of fragment stones is also implicated to the environmental conservation, especially to the mine for stone, because the construction material which used a local material has reached 90% percentage. 8) It can be applied with the simple realization process and also simple equipments.

3. Steps of Matos Road Layer Process. 3.a. Mechanical Method Mechanical method is the realization project which used mechanical equipments, there are: 1. Dozer, if its used local soil 2. Tractor and Rotavator with 90 HP minimum, for loosen and mixture of soil. 3. Grader,to shape the road 4. Water tank and/with water pump, to pour over the Matos liquid. 5. 4 ton Compactor, to make the road material solid and to refine the road surface. Matos road layer realization had a several mechanically steps. The followings are the steps: 1) Measuring for construction and design. 2) Elevated of road 3) The preparations of soil for Matos constructions. The soil could be from local soil or fill in from the quary.
