ECOMUSEUMS IN SERBIA
Applying Foreign Experiences
Summary
Ecomuseum model is the most suitable form of cultural heritage and natural resources management
in line with sustainable development of local communities and their territory. Trough ecomuseums lo-
cal governments have the possibility to transfer the process of protection of cultural and natural resourc-
es from the institutions that deal with them to the level of local communities, which in turn, by participat-
ing in this process, are in a position to provide its sustainable development and material prosperity. Eco-
museums reject the concept of the museum as an institution-building and the concept of museum objects
as the central phenomenon and replace it with the concept of heritage totality.
Tis paper considers the experience of others, in this case ecomuseums of Trento and Piedmont in
Italy, and the possibility of its use in the process of forming ecomuseums in Serbia. Forming of an ecomu-
seum is a very complex and long process that involves a lot of factors: local government, competent insti-
tutions of culture and the local community, which is a real functional carrier of its existence. Talking about
the issue of forming ecomuseums in Serbia means to keep up with the New Museology - Ecomuseology,
which has rapidly developed worldwide in the last two decades and is considered the best model for a ho-
listic approach in protecting the natural environment and cultural heritage, at the same time protecting
the essence of specifc characteristics in diferent societies and communities.
