Your Air Conditioner

Tips and Checks

This checklist is designed to help you get the most out of your air conditioner by maximizing its life span and efciency. Whether youre getting it ready for the summer or putting it away at the end of the season, your air conditioner needs a certain amount of attention. Your air conditioner will provide you with years of good service and cool comfort if you look after it properly. First of all, remember that your air conditions was designed for residential use when the temperature outside is above 16C. The air conditioner should not be used if the temperature outside is lower than that.

At the start of the season before you begin running the air conditioner Check the following:

Air filters for the indoor unit

Be sure to clean the air lters see Maintenance/Checks.

Indoor and outdoor unit air circulation

Make sure that nothing prevents air from circulating freely around the units. Remember to remove the protective covering on the outdoor unit, if there is one.

Drain hose or hole

Is the visible part of the drain hose or hole free from obstruction? see Maintenance/Checks.

Batteries for the remote

Make sure the remote has batteries in it and replace them if necessary see Maintenance/Checks.

Powering up the unit

Does the unit have power? Is the power switch and/or the circuit breaker in the ON position?

Using the remote to start the air conditioner

First, read the manufacturers instructions about how the unit operates and its modes of operation. Once you have turned on the unit, be sure to give it enough time to adequately cool the room, especially when the room is very hot and/or very humid. Lower the temperature on your thermostats to make sure the heating and air conditioning systems are not operating at the same time.

Drainage of water (condensed water)

Make sure water drains freely from the unit see Maintenance/Checks.

Have you checked everything?

Complete your check by following the specic manufacturers instructions.

After the Summer

Drying out the air conditioner

Run the indoor unit fan for 3 or 4 hours to dry out the inside of the air conditioner if you plan to only use the fan, you should also follow the manufacturers instructions.

Powering down the unit

Switch the power switch and/or the circuit breaker to the OFF position.

Batteries for the remote

Remove the batters to prevent them from leaking and damaging the unit.

Protective cover
You may wish to cover the outdoor unit with a protective cover.

Be sure to read the manufacturers instructions as well.

Maintenance/Checks (Before and while using the air conditioner)

Before doing any maintenance on the unit or cleaning the air conditioner
Turn the unit off.

Air filters
Regularly clean the air lter located under the removable grill on the indoor unit, which collects dust from the air in the room. A dirty or blocked air lter impedes air flow, decreases the units cooling power and increases the noise level. Check the lter every 2 weeks, every 100 hours of operation, and as necessary depending on air quality. Clean the lters as needed. Cleaning the filter: Raise or remove the grill on the indoor unit and carefully remove the air lter. For your protection, do not touch any metal parts in the indoor unit. Use your vacuum cleaner to clean dust from the air lter. Washing the air filter (as needed): Use warm water (40C or less) and a mild detergent. Rinse with clean water. Dry in the shade. Put the air lter(s) back in the original position.

CAUTION: Never operate the air conditioner without an air filter or with a damaged filter. If dust gets into theunit it can: hinder normal operation of the unit reduce or block the discharge of water from the dehumidifying unit (condensed water). Water can then overflow or spill from the cooling or drainage unit and damage your belongings. damage the unit

Front cover of the unit

If the front cover gets dirty, clean it with a soft dry cloth. If the front cover is very dirty, clean it with a soft cloth moistened with warm water and a mild detergent. Wipe dry with a soft dry cloth. The water temperature should not be more than 40C. Do not use any of the following to clean the unit: benzene, gasoline, acid, solvents, cleaning powder or a brush. These can all damage the units plastic parts and housing.

Replacing the batteries

The remote is battery operated. When the signal from the remote fails to activate the unit or if the display is hard or impossible to see, the batters need to be replaced. An alkaline battery generally lasts about a year. Please follow the manufacturers instructions about what type of battery the remote uses (rechargeable batteries are not usually recommended). Remove the cover on the remote and take out the batteries, which should be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner. Install the new batteries, being sure to align the poles () correctly. When you have replaced the batteries, read the manufacturers instructions for operating the remote operation of the remote may vary from model to model.

Making sure the water drains properly

Is the end of the drain hose or the visible part of the drain hole obstructed? Dirt or insect nests can hinder or prevent the normal drainage of water from the dehumidifying unit (condensed water), which could cause damage to your belongings. Make sure that water from the dehumidifying unit (condensed water) flows freely from the drain hose or drain hole, especially if the air is very humid. If the air is very humid, more water will drain from the indoor unit (condensed water). It collects in a drip pan, then drains out of the unit. If the outlet for the built-in unit or the drain pan is obstructed by dirt or other debris, the normal flow of water from the dehumidifying unit (condensed water) will be hindered or stopped. This could cause damage to your belongings.

Be sure to read the manufacturers instructions as well.

After several seasons of use, the dirt and dust that collect inside your air conditioner may prevent it from

working at maximum efficiency.

If water (condensed water) is not draining properly from the dehumidifying or drainage unit, it could cause an

odor or an overflow. You must then restore proper flow. Be sure to check your unit carefully!
In addition to doing regular maintenance on your air conditioner, dont hesitate to call on a qualified technician to

perform an inspection and maintenance (for a fee). This will help prolong the life of your air conditioner and keep it running at maximum efciency.

During the inspection and maintenance check, the qualied technician will:

Check and clean the following as necessary

indoor unit air filter(s) indoor unit heat exchanger (coil, evaporator) outdoor unit heat exchanger (coil, condenser)

indoor unit built-in condenser pan and drain hole indoor unit fan wheel indoor unit drip pan (visual check, vacuuming)

Check how well the unit lowers the room temperature and, as necessary, the amount of coolant.

Only a qualied technician should repair or take apart an air conditioner or its components. An improper repair or disassembly could prevent the unit from running the way it should or could cause a leak, an injury, electric shock or a fire.

If the air conditioner is not working properly The unit is not running or doesnt seem to be working properly. It is normal for it to take about 3 minutes for the air conditioner to start working after you have turned it on. The delay is a safety measure to protect components. Wait about 3 minutes and the air conditioner should start operating. If it does not, check the following:
Is the air conditioner switched on, with power? The power switch and/or circuit breaker must be in the ON position. Is the unit controled by a timer? Check the manufacturers instructions. Do the batteries in the remote need to be replaced? (low or no display) Does the remote have the right batteries? see Maintenance/Checks.

Noisy air conditioner?

Crackling in the indoor unit: this does not mean it is not working properly. The sound is produced by the expansion/contraction of the front panel, caused by the change in temperature when the air conditioner is turned on or off. Liquid circulating in the indoor unit: this does not mean it is not working properly. It is the sounds of the coolant circulating inside the air conditioner. Be sure to read the manufacturers instructions as well.

The air conditioner is not cooling the room enough? Check the following:
Is the indoor unit air filter clean? see Maintenance/Checks. Is the air circulation in the indoor and outdoor units blocked? Is the unit set at the recommended temperature? Is there a major heat source in the room being cooled? Check to see whether any heating units are operating (remember to turn down thermostats), or if there are any open door or windows, etc. When the air conditioner is turned on, allow enough time for the unit to cool the room, especially when the air in the room was/is very warm and/or very humid. Be sure to read the manufacturers instructions as well.

2004GXXX

CAUTION: Do not run your air conditioner for long periods when the humidity is high (such as when a window or door is left open). If a unit is used for a long time to cool a very humid room (humidity of 80% or more), condensed water from the air conditioner can overflow and damage furniture, etc.
