LESSON PLAN

Proposer: Ostcioaie Adina Mirela Date: 26.04.2012 Class: 5th A Unit of learning: 13 Topic: Rules Main focus: must/mustnt Instruction time: 50 minutes Type of lesson: Combined lesson / Fixation of knowledge, developing skills and acquisition of knowledge Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to teach the language necessary for formulating rules. The students are given a demonstration of the language needed to find rules and then are asked to formulate the classroom rules for students. Lesson aims: To reinforce the already studied grammatical structures and vocabulary; To practice can/cant in new context; To introduce new structures (the present tense of must); To introduce new vocabulary; To have students talk about school rules; To work in pairs, finding rules that they must respect in various situations; To answer the questions from the text The search. Anticipated problems: Some students may not feel self-confident about their pronounce and refuse interaction. Materials: textbooks, dictionaries, blackboard and worksheets. Methods: conversation, explanation, example, exercise. Skills involved: speaking, writing, reading.

Procedure
I. Warm up: (estimated time: 2 minutes) T: greets students, asks informal questions, prepares materials for the lesson; Ss: answer informal questions. Interaction: T. Ss. II. Checking homework: (estimated time: 3 minutes) T: asks students to read the homework and/or to go to the blackboard to write the correct sentences, deals with correction; Ss: read the homework, answer the teachers questions. Interaction: T. Ss. / Ss. T. III. Revising the previous knowledge: (estimated time: 5 minutes) T: asks students about the characteristics of can as a modal verb and asks to give examples with can and cant. Gives students some worksheets to solve together and if remains some exercises, they will note them as homework; Ss: answer the teachers questions. Solve the worksheets together. Interaction: T. Ss. / Ss. T. IV. Transition to the new lesson: (Estimated time: 2 minutes) T: raises the students interest in practicing speaking skills with verbs of necessity. Announces the students that they are going to use even more the modal verb of necessity and prohibition and equivalents, so that they should be able to speak about things they have to do every day and things they mustnt do in their everyday life; Ss: listen carefully. Interaction: T. Ss. V. Introducing new language: Lead-in: (estimated time: 10 minutes) T: writes the title on the blackboard. Introduces the context, explains the keyconcepts and demonstrates the meaning and use of the new language. Reads the Presentation from 1A as a model for a correct pronunciation. Writes on the blackboard the unknown words. Ss: write the title in their notebooks, listen to the teachers explanations and answer the questions. Read the text, translate it and write in their notebooks the unknown words. Interaction: T. Ss. / Ss. T. Elicitation: (estimated time: 5 minutes) T: sees if students can produce the new language and decides which of the stages to go next (accurate reproduction or immediate creativity). Asks student

to solve the exercise 1B and sees if they understood how to use must and mustnt; Ss: solve the exercise 1B by making a list of what they must do if they want to keep a dog, and a list of things that a dog mustnt do. Interaction: T. Ss. / Ss. T. Accurate reproduction: (Estimated time: 5 minutes) T: asks students to read the exercise 2A, the rules from different countries. Asks students to specify if they have the same rules in their classroom, to note them and write another 5 that are not in the book. Ss: read the exercise 2A, choose the rules that they respect in their classroom, write them in the notebook and find another 5 rules that are not mentioned in the book. Interaction: T. Ss. / Ss. T. Immediate creativity: (estimated time: 15 minutes) T: asks students to work in group of 5. Explains what they have to do: to find rules that must be respected in various situations (when they go in parc, when they want to loose in weight, when they are at a friends house, when they walk on the street, when they see an accident). Help them when they ask for it, and listen the rules the students found. Asks student to read the text from page 64, to translate it and to answer the questions; Ss: form groups of 5. One student from every group go in front of the class to choose a note which they will read it. Work together, find rules and read them to their classmates. Ss. / Group work Feedback: (estimated time: 3 minutes) T: points out again the characteristics of must, its meanings and use; Ss: answer the teachers questions, give examples. Interaction: T. End of the lesson T: greets students and leave the classroom; Ss: greet the teacher.
