The Megillah of Ruth is read to join te nation of Israel through on the holiday of Shavuot. conversion. However, there are The author of the Megillah certain nations that the Torah was Shmuel Hanavi, the explicitly lists whose members prophet Samuel. There are may not join the nation of many commentators who have Israel. The Torah states Lo given reasons explaining the yavo Amoni UMoavi bkahal connection between Shavuot Hashem, an Ammonite or a and Megillat Ruth. However, Moavite shall not enter into the an answer to a question essembly of G-D, as Ruth was posed in the Midrash gives from the nation of Moav, how us a particularly important could it happen that not only understanding of the connection was she permitted to convert, between Shavuot and Megillat but she also married one of the Ruth. In the Midrash Rabbah most respected, distinguished on Ruth we find the following and wisest men of her question: Rav Zeura said: This generation, Boaz? The answer Megillah does not tells of the lies in the verse cited above. The laws of purity and impurity.... verse says that a Moavi, a male Why was it Written? The Moavi, can not enter the nation qustion, however, does not have of Israel. Boaz understood that to end here. We can question the law was a female Moavite further. Even once we know a was indeed allowed to convert, reason for why it was written, and therefore Ruths conversion why was it necessary to include and marriage to a Jew presented it among the Scriptures? In order no problems. This Halachik to understand the answers, a ruling about the statue of a little background about an issue female Moavite, however, was of Halacha that was of concern not widely known amongst the at the time of Ruth is indeed nation of Israel. Many thought required. Generally, according that no male or female, from the to Halacha, gentiles are allowed nation of Moav was allowed to

convert to Judaism. This understanding of the law not only presented problems in the time of King David, Ruths great-grandson. In the time immediately proceeding the crowning of David as King and right afterwards, here were those who began to publicly raise doubts whether David was of proper, kosher, lineage, because of his great-grandmother Ruth. The Megilla of Ruth stands for the proposition that the Oral Law was given to us at Sinai, and that the Oral and Written Torah are truly one intertwined gift from G-D. Boaz acted properly based on what he knew from his study of the Oral Torah. His willingness to act on that which he knew to be the law should send us a message: we must shaw that we truly believe in the Oral Torah, that we recognize that the Oral Torah was given to us at Sinai.
