CHAPTER I The Problem and a Review of Related Literature

Engineering is a profession or a degree in college that many perceive as an indemand course and also has in-demand jobs. It has 5 main branches; first, the Civil Engineering; second, the Mechanical Engineering; third, the Chemical Engineering fourth; the Electrical Engineering; and fifth, the Industrial Engineering. Among all the said branches, only the Industrial Engineering makes the people curious. As many, know Civil Engineers make or construct bridges and buildings. Mechanical engineers work for the design of mechanical system of an engine. Chemical Engineers focus their profession in chemicals which can be used to design new and specialty materials. Electrical engineers work for the designs of electrical system such as, transformers and other electrical goods. Lastly, the Industrial Engineers, what do they do? Are they working on industry? Most think that way, but perhaps it is time to explore the profession of being an Industrial Engineer. The first year Industrial Engineering students from the University of the Assumption conducted a research paper to inform each and everybody, how they work, what are the jobs that they can apply to, and the contribution that they can give in our society. At first they are also doubted their degree but later on, realized that you cannot judge something without knowing it. They decided to have a survey around UA about their perceptions in the said profession. They also made discussions with some of their relatives and friends about the job they can get as an IE graduate. While doing research about the meaning of Industrial Engineering, they have interviewed some of their teachers and professors of the IE Department in the University of the Assumption to give them a simple introduction about the field. And also, they have viewed CDs of some people who work on Walt Disney Corporation to give their opinion as having the job of IEs. Industrial Engineers are those people who have creative thinking, those who determine the most effective ways to use the basic factor of production the people, machine, materials, and energy to make a good quality of products. Being an IE, they need to be able to observe the possible problems that may encounter in a production then solving and giving its data analysis. It may sound a little too difficult but every IE loves

their job as far as their doing what they wanted to do and what they have learned. They also love travelling and solving challenges as they explore more about their field. If you are a person who really likes travelling and exploring new things then you can try the job. Travelling is one of the simple jobs of an IE; it helps them to observe what is happening around the company or area where they are assigned.

Objectives and Purposes of the Study

General Purpose This study aims to know the perceptions of students in UA community about the course Industrial Engineering. Specific Purpose This research seeks to answer the following questions: 1. How did IE start at UA? 2. What are the purposes of the UA community to Industrial Engineering? 3. How do the Industrial Engineers work as one Institute in the UA community?

Review of Related Literature

A. What is Industrial Engineering? Industrial engineers determine the most effective ways to use the basic factors of productionpeople, machines, materials, information, and energyto make a product or provide a service. They are concerned primarily with increasing productivity through the management of people, methods of business organization, and technology. To maximize efficiency, industrial engineers study product requirements carefully and then design manufacturing and information systems to meet those requirements with the help of mathematical methods and models. They develop management control systems to aid in financial planning and cost analysis, and they design production planning and control systems to coordinate activities and ensure product quality. They also design or improve systems for the physical distribution of goods and services and determine the most efficient plant locations. Industrial engineers develop wage and salary administration systems and job evaluation programs. Many industrial engineers move into management positions because the work is closely related to the work of managers. B. What are the main jobs of IE? These are the main job of being Industrial Engineers: I. Analyze II. Problem solve III. Improve efficiency IV. Minimize costs

V. Save time Due to industrial growth here and abroad, more complex business operations, and greater use of automation in factories and offices, employment of industrial engineers is expected to grow about the average. Thats why being an IE we can choose from different Jobs opportunities here and abroad that we can apply to.

But when applying in a Job as IE we need to take efforts in achieving good grades and studying hard because the main function of an industrial engineer is to make a higher quality product as efficiently as possible, their services should be in demand in the manufacturing sector as firms seek to reduce costs and increase productivity through scientific management. So we need to past certain requirements to get the job we wanted, though it may look difficult to do or hard to achieve we must keep on trying. And because we want to contribute little things, we have decided to include in this proposed plan a basic requirement of getting an IE job. C. What are the skills required for an IE student / graduate?

Required Skills: Industrial engineers use drafting and drawing skills and should have knowledge of electronics, business administration, and computer science. Additionally, they need knowledge of high-level math and sciences, engineering principles, and design. They should have a working knowledge of computers, electronics, and finance, and skills in technical writing, speaking, and computer use.

Required Experience: A bachelors degree in industrial engineering, or a related engineering degree, is almost always essential for entering this occupation, although a few employers will consider applicants without engineering backgrounds. These are just one of the things one must have to get an IE job. Here are Job Tasks for (http://www.careerplanner.com/Job Description/)
