The Players
All the players that attend Battlecry 2012 are expected to conduct themselves appropriately throughout the tournament. That includes playing the game in the right spirit, making sure they have everything they need (dice, measuring tape etc, clear army lists and their armies!) and in general contributing to a friendly environment where everyone can enjoy both their games and the time spent in between rounds with their peers. The tournament organizer (me: Wayde) will do his best to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly and everything is provided to enable the players to get as much enjoyment as possible from the event, and likewise the players should do their utmost to hold up their end of the bargain. Most important of all, enjoy yourself!

TOURNAMENT RULES
Playing the Tournament
You will participate in a series of six games (spread over two days), each against a different opponent. Players will be matched against an opponent in the First Round based on specific (and confidential) guidelines. After that, in each round the two players in 1st and 2nd place (based on their points for Gameplay) will play each other, the players in 3rd and 4th place will play each other; the players in 5th and 6th place will play each other, and so on. The only exception is that you should never play the same opponent twice; should this happen let the TO know so they can sort things out and offer you fresh opponents of a suitable calibre. The main advantage of this system is that it seeds players after the First Round, and makes sure that the final winner of the Tournament will have faced some tough opposition along the way.

What You Need to Bring

Any gaming material that you require to play, including: Your Army At least two copies of your Army Roster This rules pack Rulebook Your relevant codex All relevant FAQs and Errata from the GW website Pen and paper Tape measure Dice and templates At least two objective markers Superglue/plastic glue (because accidents do happen) Calculator (this will be handy) Deodorant (Im not going to say why, youll figure it out)

Battlecry 2012

Army Roster
All lists will need to be checked and submitted by the 6pm Saturday 28th January 2012. All army lists must be submitted via e-mail. Email to: reddhavic@clear.net.nz and please include Battlecry, your name & army list type in the subject line. All army lists are full and final when submitted unless an amendment is requested by the Tournament Organiser. The list must be typed in a clear legible fashion in either a Word or Excel type format. Any other format will not be accepted as the tournament organiser will not be able to make heads nor tails of it and it will not be able to be registered. The army list must contain details on the points of each character and wargear they take. Due to system restrictions, please do not use Army Builder type programs to create a list to hand in prior to the tournament. However, Army Builder lists can be used on the day of the event. Just be sure that the roster includes all of the models in your army, their points value, the points value of any equipment, and it must specify which models are carrying any Wargear that you decide to take. If you require examples of some of the formats the TO will accept, please drop the TO a line and a sampling of army list formats can be e-mailed to you. It is important to remember that when you use a points limit you can only spend up to the limit agreedthis means that in an 1850 points game you must spend 1850 points or less. You will need a copy of your list to show your opponent before the game. The latest version of the Warhammer 40,000 rules makes showing your opponent your list optional. However, in the spirit of fair and friendly game-play, opponents are expected to reveal whats in their army before each game.

Warhammer 40,000 Tournament Rules

The tournament will use Warhammer 40,000 5th edition rules released June 2008. Players are encouraged to bring along a copy of the most recent and relevant FAQs covering rule clarifications from the Games Workshop website.

Army Limitations:
The points level for armies is set at 1850 points. No more than that points limit may be spent on your army. The permitted armies will have a published, available Codex list. These armies are: Codex: Space Marines Codex: Black Templars Codex: Blood Angels Codex: Dark Angels Codex: Space Wolves Codex: Chaos Space Marines Codex: Daemons Codex: Witch Hunters (as found in White Dwarf) Codex: Daemonhunters Codex: Imperial Guard Codex: Eldar Codex: Dark Eldar Codex: Tau Empire Codex: Orks Codex: Necrons Codex: Tyranids If your list specifically allows allies, either in its codex or as a result of supplementary list published in another Codex then they can be used. No more than one detachment may be used and all armies must use the Standard Mission force organisation chart unless specifically allowed to use an alternative.

Weapons, armour options and upgrades chosen from the Codex must be shown on the all models in a unit. You are encouraged to use converted Citadel miniatures to represent troop types not yet available.

Battlecry 2012

Special Characters
Special characters will be allowed, HOWEVER special characters are unique: There Can Be Only One. One (1) of each special character will only be allowed in this tournament i.e. There will only be one (1) Tyco in the whole tournament, only one (1) Eldred in the whole tournament etc. (Masters of the Deathwing and Masters of the Ravenwing will be exempt as these will be judged as Titles, not special characters). To register your special character, you must be the first person to fully pay for your Battlecry registration and hand in a LEGAL army list containing the named special character/s: First In, First Served. There will be no pre-booking or bagsing of special characters prior to your army list being handed in. Once your registration has been confirmed as fully paid for and your legal army list has been handed in, any special characters you have nominated will only be used by you. There will be NO alterations/amendments made to your army list unless requested by the Tournament Organiser. If any army list has to be returned due to irregularities and/or legality issues, you will lose your booking on your chosen special character: so please be careful when handing in your army lists. A list of the taken/registered special characters will be updated regularly on the Battlecry website.

DECIDING WHO WINS THE TOURNAMENT

The winner of the Tournament will be the player who scores the most points in the categories described below. The points scored in each category will be added together, and the player with the highest total will be the winner. In the case of a tie, the winner will be the player who scored the most points in the Gameplay category (second tiebreaker Sportsmanship points). In addition to the overall winner, a number of other awards will also be given out.

Trophies/Awards will be given for the following:

1st Overall (player with most tournament points) 2nd Overall 3rd Overall Best Army combination of Presentation and Army Selection Best Sport Best Presented Army

OVERALL SCORE BREAKDOWN

40% 20% 15% 25% Gameplay Sportsmanship Presentation Army Selection

GAMEPLAY (40% Overall Score)

You will score points in each of the missions that you play that contribute to your Gameplay Score. This score is made up of two components Result Points and Bonus Points. Result Points Win 10 points Draw 5 points* Loss 0 points

*In the case of a draw in a mission, Victory point conditions will be used to determine a winner (as found in the back of your rulebooks). This could still result in a draw (i.e. victory points within 10%) in which case, a 5 point result will be posted to each competitor. Bonus Points Each of the following criteria score 1 bonus point Enemy General dead or falling back at end of the game; Most expensive enemy unit destroyed, immobilized or falling back at end of the game; Your General is neither dead nor falling back at the end of the game; No enemy scoring units in your Deployment Zone; You have at least one Troop Unit that counts as scoring (as per the Warhammer 40k rulebook) at the end of the game.

These points combine to give a game score of 0 to 15 points. This gives a score out of 90 which will be converted to a 40% contribution of your overall score.

Battlecry 2012

SPORTSMANSHIP (20% Overall Score)

After every game each player will answer the 5 questions below regarding their opponents sportsmanship attributes throughout the game. A player's tournament points for sports are calculated by their opponent's responses to these questions.

1. Regardless of the outcome of the battlewas the game mostly free of instances
where your opponent's behavior detracted from your enjoyment of the game?

2. Were all rules queries resolved amicably and without too much argument? 3. Was your game free of any instances where you thought that your opponent's
activities/play style was "dodgy"? ("Rubber Ruler", dice etiquette etc).

4. In your opinion, did your opponent play the game in the right spirit? For example, did
they maintain a sensible approach and demeanor when things were not going their way? Were they organized in their approach to the game? 5. Would you be happy enough to play your opponent again? Maybe not today but at another tournament perhaps? For every "Yes" response your opponent scores one point. This gives a score out of 30 which will be converted to a 20% contribution of your overall score. At the end of the tournament you will be asked to nominate the opponent who you believe was the most sporting out of the six games. These votes will be used in the event a tiebreaker is needed to decide the Best Sportsmanship award.

PRESENTATION (15% Overall Score)

The TO (or designated Painting Judge) will look at each army during the tournament and mark the painting on the following criteria:

1. The painting on the models is detailed (e.g. painting is uniform and neat, details such
as belts, buckles, pouches etc are completed)- 4 points

2. All models inked/highlighted (e.g. discernible shading and highlights present, the 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
highlighting/shading is neat and clean, some evidence of blending present etc) - 4 points All models based and flocked - 2 points Flock uses 2 different materials (e.g. static grass and rocks) OR made an above average effort on their bases (e.g. molded cobble stones for example) 1 point Army has consistent feel (e.g. similar colours, units have distinct variations but overall theme the same etc) - 3 points Some models have been modified (e.g. clear conversion work to introduce variety includes such areas as green stuff/plasticard modifications, head swaps, arm rotations etc) 3 points Character/Centrepiece models are distinctive (extra effort has lavished on the character or centerpiece models to make them distinctive) 3 points

These criteria represent a range. However, under the criteria a nicely painted army with a consistent feel, attractively based with inking/highlighting, involving some conversion work and distinctive characters/centerpiece models will score the full 20 points. Presentation Points give a score out of 20 which will be converted to a 15% contribution of your overall score.

Battlecry 2012

ARMY SELECTION (25% Overall Score)

Army selection will be done a little different this year: Blind Peer Review

Copies of each and every army list will be sent to each competitor via e-mail on Monday 30th January 2011. An excel spread sheet will be attached to this e-mail. Each competitor will then mark these army lists. Each army list will have player names removed and replaced with a player number. Judges (i.e. you) will then allocate a score based on the criteria listed below. Judges will be required to e-mail back their scores by no later than 6pm Wednesday 15th February 2012. Those scores that are received by this time will be averaged out and used.

Judges will rate composition by assigning each list to one of the following categories (with 5 being the weakest and 1 being the strongest). The following are descriptors for each of the categories: Category 5. The army would be considered soft. You would breathe a sigh of relief if you drew to play this army in the first round of the event. (5 points) Category 4. While the army isn't weak, it has sacrificed effectiveness for style and fluff. It has forsaken many of the stronger options in its codex. (4 points) Category 3. The army seems to represent a well-designed tournament list that seemed to place it with the majority of the other lists and/or normal tournament armies. (3 points) Category 2. The army has a VERY strong design and mix of units that makes it tougher than the majority of other armies and/or what you would normally see at a tournament. (2 points) Category 1. The army is clearly MUCH tougher than the majority of other armies and/or what you would normally see at a tournament. There are selections galore in this army that are simply there to make it a very strong list. (1 point) The score assigned by you, the panel of judges, contributes to 25% of your overall score.

OTHER AWARDS
BEST SPORT
The Best Sport Prize will be awarded to that army that scores the highest score in Sportsmanship. In the event of a tie, Best Sport votes will be used as the tiebreaker.

BEST ARMY
The Best Army Prize will be awarded to that army that scores the highest combined points for Army Selection and Presentation. In the event of a tie, Players Choice votes will be used as the tiebreaker.

BEST PRESENTED ARMY

The Best Presented Army award is for those players who have painted their ENTIRE army themselves. The reward is intended to provide recognition for those people who have put their heart and soul into completing a truly unique army. If the army is either somebody elses work or represents the joint efforts of more than one person then it is ineligible for this award. Participants will be required to mark on their entry as to whether their army represents entirely their own efforts. In this the Tournament Organizer is relying on the honesty of those participating in the tournament and believes that nobody would want to receive credit for efforts that were not their own. If you are at all unsure as to whether your army satisfies the criteria to be included in the Best Presented Army judging please contact the Tournament Organizer to discuss. The award will be decided by player voting in the Beauty Pageant. While it is expected that all armies will be displayed during the Pageant, it will be made clear which armies are eligible to receive votes.

GAME PLAY AND RULES QUESTIONS

The primary purpose of Battlecry 2012 is to get together for the weekend, to play our favourite game and meet other players who share our interests. Finding champion players of our games is a by-product of this, and were really much more interested in creating a quality gaming experience for all the people who take part, where they get to play lots of great games and meet a whole bunch of new players. This said, we do understand that sometimes even the friendliest of players can lose their cool, especially if the dice have been going against them all day. The most common cause of friction in a game is questions about the rules of the game. Rules questions arise in most games of Warhammer 40,000, both because the huge number of variables involved in the game make it just about impossible for the rulebook to cover every situation that might occur, and because different people interpret the rules in different ways. In order to avoid arguments we recommend that you refer to the appropriate rulebook as soon as a question arises. The rules used are the rulebook, the Codex and FAQ and Errata from the Games Workshop web site. The newest publication should be used in all cases. If the rules do not cover the situation, then roll a dice to decide what happens. In other words, a friendly dice roll should decide any questions that cannot be answered by referring to the rules. Please note that there is absolutely nothing wrong with asking an opponent if they can show you the appropriate rule or set of characteristics so that you can see check for yourself that everything is being done correctly. All thats required is that you ask politely, and that you do your best to sort out any problems yourself. If the problem still cannot be solved then you can call an event official and they may intervene. Be warned, Umpires usually give players one of two answers to any question they are asked. 1. They will show you the Rule in its relevant place in the rules. 2. Roll a D6 to sort out any problems not solved by the above. The decisions of the Umpires are final, and no further discussion will be entered into. Warning: The TO has a big stick!

Battlecry 2012

MISSIONS
The missions used for the six games will be a mix of those from the Rulebook and new missions created by the TO for tournament play. You should therefore plan your armies for any eventuality. A copy of the missions that will be used will be presented to players on the morning of Saturday 18th February 2012. As there is only a limited time for each game during the day, it is expected that the players read through the missions prior to commencing their game, in order to be familiar with associated Universal Special Rules, Victory Conditions etc. Because Victory Points are involved in all missions it is required that players be familiar with the Victory Points system (as found at the back of your Rulebooks) and have two copies of their roster on hand to ensure points can be quickly calculated (and probably a calculator).

Battlecry 2012

FINAL WORDS
The Most Important Rule: The most important rule about playing games of Warhammer 40,000 is to have fun! Now while having fun may often be gained by mercilessly crushing your opponent's forces, never ever forget that you are both there to have fun. Whenever you play a game, you and your opponent are basically agreeing to duel according to a set of fairly abstract rules, with a theoretical ground scale, using representative forces and a thousand other subtle agreements that go together to make it work. The battle itself is a shared experience and great entertainment for both sides of they are both willing to make it so, No one particularly enjoys playing a game with someone who is overwrought, irascible and generally mean, or who only plays to win at all costs. That kind of player soon has difficulty finding opponents because they simply aren't much fun to game against. So the most important rule is to play nice and treat your opponent with the respect you would wish to get back from them so that you both have an enjoyable and exciting game. If you can do that and mercilessly crush their forces at the same time, then you really are a winner. All that remains is to wish you the very best of luck and every success at the event!
