By Tim King Retirements, promotions, and grant programs in the Todd County Health and Human Services Division put hiring at the center of the Todd County Commissioners meeting again on Tuesday, May 15. A June 29 retirement of a Certified Public Health Nurse will create problems completing work in the areas of Long Term Care Consultations, Personal Care Assessments, and numerous other work areas, according to Cheryl Schneider, Health and Human Services Director. Schneider asked commissioners to waive the 90-day wait to fill the position. She said doing so would save the county significant overtime pay. They agreed to waive the waiting period. Schneider said she would look within her department to fill the position. If we fill this position internally we will have to fill another opening, she said. I expect we will have to hire someone externally. Commissioners also agreed to allow Schneider to interview and hire two Social Workers for Mental Health services. The two positions are responsible for overseeing more than 100 cases in areas such as Sexual Offender Commitment and Mental Health Administration. Schneider said the applicants could either be Social Workers with experience in

mental health or registered public health nurses. Registered nurses have a broader range of services that they can provide, she said. Both openings were created because the people who previously held the positions were promoted. Commissioners also approved hiring one person to do case management services for disabled adults under a contract with Medica. If the caseload goes over 75 adults Schneider was given the option to hire a second case manager. About 80% of the cost of hiring a case manager will be offset by revenues from the insurance company, according to Schneider. Schneider also received approval to hire a part time person to assist with the Youth Alcohol Prevention grant project. The position will be entirely funded through the grant program. The grant was for approximately one million dollars and is intended to help students in Browerville and Long Prairie avoid alcohol use. Weve gotten off to a slow start Continued on page 7.
