Structure for a DBQ Thesis Essay

The Five Paragraph Expository Essay Method Introduction: This should grab your readers attention and get them interested in the point you are trying to make. Many times effective introductions can be made with a description of a dramatic event, some background information, a meaningful quote with analysis, or a much more current event that is related to the event in question. Thesis: Your introductory paragraph should lead up to your thesis, which is the last sentence that takes a stand on an issue (meaning you have to pick one side of the argument or the other.) The thesis is the point you will prove. First Supporting Point: This paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that logically states a reason why the thesis is true according to the evidence and the paragraph should be a logical argument as to why that supporting point supports the thesis which infused with the writers background knowledge. Supporting Evidence: This should be at least three pieces of evidence that are quoted directly out of the documents provided (Not conjecture!) that are woven into the logical argument and background knowledge in the paragraph to support the statements that the writer is making. Second Supporting Point: This paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that logically states a reason why the thesis is true according to the evidence and the paragraph should be a logical argument as to why that supporting point supports the thesis which infused with the writers background knowledge. Restated Thesis: You should now restate your thesis to wrap up your argument and to bring the focus back to the original point you set out to prove. Conclusion: Your conclusion basically ends your paper in a satisfying way that leaves your reader with a sense of closure. You can recap your supporting points, relate your thesis to a broader or more general theme, make predictions about the possible future, or end with a quote.
