Thecontrolsegmentconsistsofworldwidemonitor andcontrolstations Itmaintainthesatellitesintheirproperorbits throughoccasionalcommandmaneuvers,and adjustthesatelliteclocks. IttrackstheGPSsatellites,uploadsupdated navigationaldata,andmaintainshealthandstatus ofthesatelliteconstellation.

3. User Segment

TheusersegmentconsistsoftheGPSreceiver equipment,whichreceivesthesignalsfromthe GPSsatellitesandusesthetransmitted informationtocalculatetheusersthree dimensionalpositionandtime.

GPSsatellitesprovideservicetocivilianand militaryusers. Thecivilianserviceisfreelyavailabletoallusers onacontinuous,worldwidebasis. ThemilitaryserviceisavailabletoU.S.andallied armedforcesaswellasapprovedGovernment agencies.

Satellite Orbits

GPSsatellitesflyinmediumEarthorbit(MEO)at analtitudeofapproximately20,200km. EachsatellitecirclestheEarthtwiceaday. ThesatellitesintheGPSconstellationarearranged intosixorbitalplanes. Eachcontainingfourprimarysatellites. This24slotarrangementensurestherearealways

GPS Errors
1.SelectiveAvailability(solved):Selective availabilityisanartificialfalsificationofthetime intheL1signaltransmittedbythesatellite. 2.Satellitegeometry:Simplified,satellitegeometry describesthepositionofthesatellitestoeach otherfromtheviewofthereceiver.

3.SatelliteOrbits:Althoughthesatellitesare positionedinverypreciseorbits,slightshiftsof theorbitsarepossibleduetogravitationforces.

Sunandmoonhaveaweakinfluenceontheorbits Theresultingerrorbeingnotmorethan2m.

4.Multipath:Themultipatheffectiscausedby reflectionofsatellitesignals(radiowaves)on objects.

7.Relativisticeffects:GPSnavigationandmustbe accurateto2030nanosecondstoensurethe necessaryaccuracy.

Thereforethefastmovementofthesatellites themselves(nearly12000km/h)mustbe considered.
