Synopsis The two families, the Capulets and the Montagues are at war with each other and the play starts with a fight between the two sides. Later, Romeo Montague is talking to his friend Mercutio, he gives him tickets to a party at the Capulets house. Romeo is worried about going to the enemys home, but Mercutio explains it is a fancy dress party, so no one will know who they are. At the Capulets home, we meet Nurse, who is helping Juliet get ready for the party. Nurse tells Juliet that her mother wants Juliet to marry a young man called Paris, but Juliet isn't interested. Later at the party, Romeo and Juliet meet and kiss, but Tybalt, Juliet's cousin recognises Romeo and threatens him with violence. Romeo leaves the party but later talks to Juliet and asks her to marry him. She says yes, and Friar Lawrence agrees to marry them, hoping that the marriage may help to stop the fighting between their two families. After the wedding, we see Juliets cousin, Tybalt, out looking for Romeo; he wants his revenge for the other night at the party. Mercutio starts to fight Tybalt, but when Romeo appears Tybalt turns his attention on him. Romeo refuses to fight with Tybalt and so Mercutio steps in. Tybalt attacks Mercutio and kills him.
