Procedure Teacher shows the students two pictures, one is of Isabella Rossellini and the other is of Joaquin Cortes. In pairs students discuss if they know who is in the photos and give each other information about them. Teacher and students discuss the results of the pair activity. Teacher through photos / explanation pre teaches words that the students probably do not know. Teacher first elicits the words then provides them if the students do not know them. Quick review of MPF. Teacher distributes Getting Personal sheet and asks students to read the questions. Teacher then distributes the answers to the questions and asks students to match each answer with each question. In pairs students compare answers

Comments If the students do not know who the people in the pictures are they can speculate on job, personality etc.

Teacher moves students into groups of four. Teacher distributes handout with four questions. Students in groups work to complete the four questions

1) In questions 1-4 what tense is the verb in the if clause? 2) What tense is the other verb? 3) How is question 5 different? 4) Do the questions refer to real or imagined situations?

Tutor comments: On the whole this is fine. A bit more detail on the plan would help (see my comments) but you seem to have grasped the basics behind guided discovery and you state that the students were quite active during the handout stage which is a good sign. Think about the ordering of questions on the handout next time (i.e. meaning before form) and try this framework with other groups until you can claim it as a part of your regular repertoire of teaching techniques.
