1. a) What do you understand by system software? What are the differences between application
software and utility software? Explain with example.
b) Suppose that you are responsible for computerizing a restaurant’s order entry system in
a restaurant located at Gulshan. What type of input devices do you think would work best for
waiters to input orders to the kitchen?
c) What does OCR software do? Write down the difference between storage and
memory.

2. a) Suppose you are working with a 6 base number system. What will be the decimal value for the
number (345)6 ? What will be the value of the decimal number 120 in your working number
system?
b) Define domain and sub domain with example.
c) What is a homepage? Name the common three components of a browser.

3. a) What is a network topology? Draw the diagrams of Bus, Ring, Star and Mesh topologies. Which
one is the best for a large deployment in all senses?
b) Explain the terms: Intranet, Extranet and Internet.
c) Differentiate the terms: Router, Firewall, Gateway, Intrusion Detection system (IDS).

4. a) What is the fundamental difference between a business continuity and disaster recovery
process? Explain these processes in the function of accounting?
b) What is the difference between data and application backup? Where an IT department is
available for doing these tasks and what should be your role as a user/ process owner? Explain
briefly the terms: process owner, system owner, data owner and custodian of system/ data.
c) Who defines the users’ access to data? In a large computing environment, where data ownership
is shared among departments, who may take the charge of this function? What is the backup
inventory control and security?

5. a) Define real time processing and batch processing with relevant example. Suppose you are
working for a multinational bank with more than one branch in Dhaka city. Specify some
operation which can be in batch processing and some which can be in real time with specific
reason.
b) What do you understand by embedded system? Explain with example.
c) What do you understand by subneting? Why subneting is necessary in network
implementation?

6. a) What do you understand by ERP and MRP system? Name two products as examples for an ERP
system.
b) What are the areas of involvement of an accountant in implementing and operating ERP system?

c) Differentiate the individual application software package for payroll, accounting, tax,
management etc. from the same modules of an ERP system.

7. a) What are encryption and hashing? What are their purposes and differences?
b) Relate the terms – identification, authentication and authorization with the terms – access
control, user name and password. What are social engineering and shoulder surfing?
Differentiate the terms precisely: Virus, Trojan and Worm.
c) What is the difference between electronic signature and digital signature? What legal
frameworks / platforms are available to you in Bangladesh for online transactions as of 2008?

8. a) What is the difference between a spreadsheet and a database, a word processor and a web
browser?
b) As an ordinary user, the web browser and the email software are the internet to you when your
computer is connected to an ISP – explain your opinion.
c) What is an open-source software? Between the desktop and server-end (plus network
appliances), which is the most successful side for Linux OS? Name an office suite and a web
browser which are open-source. Name three applications of Linux OS as network appliance.
