UNIT-I 1. a) With the help of a neat diagram, explain the working of spreader stoker. List (10)

b) Sketch and explain various stages of coal handling in a coal preparation (08) plant.

c) List different types of fuels used for steam generation giving one example for (02) each.
2. a) Sketch and explain working of Schmidt-Hartmann boiler. (10) b) What do you understand by the term draught? Classify different types of (05) draughts and explain a balanced draught system. c) Determine the height of chimney to produce a static draught of 20mm (05) water, if the mean flue gas temperature in the chimney is 270QC and atmospheric air temperature is 20cC. Barometer reads 70mmHg. Take the gas constant for air, 287Nm/kgK, and for chimney gas 255Nm/kgK. UNIT-II Sketch general layout of a diesel generator power plant clearly explaining all the essential components. What are the functions of a fuel injection system? With suitable sketches explain i) common rail injection system using a single pump ii) Distributor system. Explain the working of a pumped storage plant. Define hydrograph and unit hydrograph and explain its importance in the design of storage of hydroelectric power project. How do you classify wind mills? Explain the working of a horizontal axis windmill. A horizontal shaft propeller type wind turbine is located in an area having the following wind characteristics. Speed of the wind: 10m/s at 1 atmosphere and 15C. Calculate, i) Total power density in wind stream ii) Maximum possible obtainable power density iii) Actual obtainable power density assuming 40% efficiency iv) Total power from the wind turbine of 1.20m diameter. UNIT-V Explain the working of a claude OTEC power plant based on an open cycle. Show all the state points on a T-s diagram. With the help of a schematic and T-s diagram explain the working of a vapour dominated geothermal power plant. Discuss the working of a single pool tidal system. What are the problems involved with biogas production? Discuss in detail. Discuss wave energy conversion by floats. What is anaerobic fermentation?
