To give an overview of what the students on the course produce we kick off the yearbook with 6 showcase pages all featuring work from one of the disciplines which define the work being produced on the course. Each showcase page has been photographed according to the content to show off the work at its best. Every student submitted one piece of work for one of these pages and is credited for it in the navigation. Each showcase catagory has its been given its own colour identity, which is featured in the margins of each page. The notch of colour in the margins also relates to the tagging system whereby students which have a focus towards that discipline in their work have the same notch on their individual page.

Grid
The main grid for the yearbook has been applied to the showcase pages, student pages and staff pages. The guides shown (bottom right) allow the navigation of the coloured catagory bars to be kept consistant. Margins: Top 8mm, Outside 8mm, Bottom 8mm, Inside 12mm. Columns: 9 columns, 4mm gutters.

When designing, my main focus is to find that clever aspect in a project. The brilliance of a concept is what makes great design stand out from the rest, rather than becoming ubiquitous.

Type led editorial and publications form my design practice. Attention to detail, bespoke letterforms and contemporary layout make my work.

Each student was allocated a single page in which they could submit work for as well as nominating which design disciplines their work applied best to. These catagories have been marked in the outer margins of each page and correlate to the notches on the showcase pages. There is also a key on the inside cover which informs the reader what each colour represents. The layout of the student pages takes the form of 3 main layouts depending on the content and photography, the restirction of these 3 main layouts keeps a consistancy throughout the profiles.

Im lucky, I teach. I have witnessed design innovation that has stopped me in my tracks and filled me with envy and admiration. Whats amazing is that most of this impressive creativity has come from people that I teach. Its encouraging to know that the calibre of our students will bring enormous benefits to an industry that I love. That is truly inspiring.

Getting older is generally rubbish, but being able to help students become what they want to be is one of the positives. Im much better at pub quizzes nowadays too.

I hate teaching! Its not in my nature - Im quite shy you see. Most of the work we do as designers is relatively temporary. However by spending time with the students, encouraging, influencing and hopefully inspiring them, in some small way will leave a more lasting impression. And that is something I really love.

To celebrate the enthusiasm, commitment and calibre of the staff, visiting lecturers and visiting professionals we ask them some questions which meant they could express what is it that brings them to the course. We wanted to add a personal quality to the entries from these contributors, which would also serve as a verification that the words had come from them. This was done by asking them to sign their name, which was used to sign off there statement.

The course starts with a question 'What is Graphic Design?'. We spend three years investigating the role of the Graphic Designer as a problem solver, creative thinker and professional practitioner. We investigate solving problems of communication through type and image. We consider how production and distribution impact on the work we produce or propose. We consider what we want to say, to whom and why? We ask what is it to be professional? After three years we all have our own answer...THIS IS GRAPHIC DESIGN.

For the students gallery page we wanted to convey the personality and unity of the students whilst also documenting the yeargroup so it could be looked back on in future. During the photoshoot we asked the students to pull a number of poses and took multiple photos of them looking in several directions. This bank of photos meant when arranged on a grid the best photos of everyone could be selected as well as choosing poses which appeared to interact with one another.
