Master of Arts in International Relations

Hults Master of Arts (MA) in International Relations program combines knowledge with professional skills, training students to evaluate and analyze global issues and trends and to become active players in an increasingly complex world.
Course grounded in contemporary events and reality The field of International Relations continues to develop rapidly in response to dramatic global changes. Hults MAIR prepares students for the combination of the known and unknown lying ahead by offering a broad platform of knowledge on the international system, its key actors, and its essential dynamics. Coursework involves question-driven analysis of issues such as crossborder migration, globalization, the widening poverty gap, the impact of American foreign policy, the threat of terrorism, and challenges to traditional systems of political and economic governance. Graduates are grounded in the facts of the past, skilled in the debates of the present, and able to anticipate patterns of future development. A structured curriculum offers students a broad base of knowledge The MAIR is designed to offer a broad base of knowledge across the discipline as a whole. The curriculum is carefully structured so that students have exposure to key sub-fields, while still maintaining an element of choice for specialist modules, allowing combinations that create a direct path to their chosen career. During a 12-month period, students undertake a series of core and elective course modules and may elect to write a thesis on a topic of their choice or undertake an internship or field study. As such, students are offered a comprehensive grounding in international issues, providing them a superior grasp of critical global issues. The comprehensive nature of the curriculum is well suited for students either with or without a background in international relations. Practical education Knowledge of the international system is supplemented by courses that provide practical skills. To succeed in any organization, graduates should possess skills in project management, finance, and leadership. Hults MAIR draws from its highly successful MBA curriculum and offers elective courses on management that are tailored toward careers in international relations. Whether seeking a career in statecraft, NGO management, or private consultancy, Hult students are empowered to combine their classroom knowledge with practical skills and engage in the world in a meaningful way. Experiential education Students may elect to participate in field study work or internships. Field studies help bridge the gap between theory and practice, and students will typically undertake a study tour, meeting actors and engaging with institutions working in the field (e.g. conflict management groups in Jordan; business leaders in China; global justice organizations in The Hague). Internship work is undertaken under the guidance of the Career Services team, and builds upon the Lifelong Career Management component of the degree. Both field study and internship are elective options usually available during the summer (Module D). Career opportunities for MA in International Relations graduates This MA program opens opportunities in a wide range of areas including: diplomacy, foreign relations, global civil service, non-government organizations, public policy consulting, risk analysis, think tanks, and non-profit organizations. Unique Campus Rotation opportunities MAIR students begin their program in London, where they take Modules A and B. During Module C, students may remain in London or they may choose to rotate to Hults other campuses in San Francisco or Shanghai to take elective courses. Hult alumni hail from over 120 countries and are global leaders in business, finance, government, as well as other fields. During the Hult Master program, your ideas, beliefs, and opinions will be challenged not only by Hults outstanding professors, but also by your diverse group of classmates.
Field work is an invaluable experience for International Relations. I spent two months living and working in a Liberian refugee camp in Ghana. What I learned changed my world view, my perspective on security, and my outlook on organizations that were created to protect people but that fail to do so. The experience changed my life and I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world. Samantha Feinstein International Rescue Commitee U.S., MAIR Class of 2009 During my Hult MBA, I gained hands-on experience, working in clubs through consulting projects and event planning. This helped me to improve my skills, build on my experiences, and also gave me the confidence to start my own business with a fellow student. I would have never met my business partner nor developed the numerous skills to run a successful business without having gone to Hult. Dianne Oliphant Director of Operations, BioHub Inc. Canada, MBA Class of 2009 I had an exceptional experience during Hults MAIR program. I gained the knowledge and the skills to break into the field of international relations and begin to tackle some of the real challenges that we face in the world. Since graduating in 2008, I have been working as a sales consultant for an independent Belgian media agency, Brussels Press. In addition to working at the media agency, I am also building on what I learned at Hult and am pursuing my PhD degree in international relations. Viktor Gjorgjieski Sales Consultant, Brussels Press Macedonia, MAIR Class of 2008 I took the MAIR course at Hult because I want to become a climate change activist and study the issues from political and analytical perspectives. Just as I was diving deeper into the topics and researching the issues from a more academic point of view, I received some great newsa non-profit organization chose to sponsor me on an expedition to Antarctica. In Antarctica, I experienced the effects of global warming firsthand, while also dealing with case studies of conflict scenarios in places such as the Arctic and Niger Delta. Divya Nawale India, MAIR Class of 2010 I had an invaluable year at Hult. Through Hults Action Learning Project, I learned the theoretical and practical skills that I now use daily in my current position. I highly recommend joining Hult. Saki Shigemori Marketing Developer, Glaxo Smith Kline Japan, MBA Class of 2009 The caliber of the curriculum, diverse student body, and the strong extracurricular activities combine to make Hult a really dynamic business school and a fun college community. Hult is a school that cultivates growth and supports its members so that they can strive intellectually and socially. Its a community where ideas are challenged and intellectual growth encouraged. Widade Deguerre U.S., MIB Class of 2010

At Hult, all of the teachings, activities, and Career Services events are organized and taught with the goal of helping me become a better global business leader. I look at my Hult MBA as a full time job; I experience the same daily challenges and problems of a real-life international decision maker and I work hard every day to reach my goals. I am also enjoying my time in Dubai and I really like the exciting lifestyle here. Hult has allowed me to understand what it truly means to deal with people from all over the world, to face difficult problems with my teams, and to think big. My favorite teacher once told me, the world is your oyster. And Hult has shown me that this is true, that I can do anything that I set my mind to. Alessandro Apicella Italy, MBA Class of 2010 Hult gave me the opportunity to work with colleagues and prestigious professors in the areas of strategy, consulting, innovation, and finance. Grading Procedure 1. Grading Standards Course instructors will evaluate and assess participant performance. Grades are assigned according to the Instructors assessment of performance on the intellectual and professional criteria established for the course. The Instructor has full authority and responsibility to establish performance criteria, evaluate participant performance, and award grades. The Faculty uses the following grading system to evaluate participant performance: Points Grade Performance 4.00 A Outstanding 3.67 AExcellent 3.33 B+ Very Good 3.00 B Good 2.67 BAcceptable 2.33 C+ High Marginal 2.00 C Marginal 1.67 CLow Marginal 1.00 D Unsatisfactory 0 F Fail Acceptable graduate-level work is a B- or better. The Registrar releases official final course grades at the end of each module in the form of a transcript. Individual grade breakdowns (participation, homework, and exam grades, for example) are available only from Instructors. Every Hult student is entitled to know the manner in which his or her course grade was calculated. 2. Grade Point Average A weighted grade point average (GPA) is computed by multiplying the numerical grade received for each course or module by the number of credit hours per course, totaling these figures, then dividing the sum by the total credit hours. "Pass" and "Incomplete" grades and their corresponding credits are not factored into the weighted average. A "Fail" will be factored into the weighted average as a numerical grade of zero. Every course in which a student has enrolled, and for which a student has been assigned a letter grade, will be denoted on his or her transcript. Every letter grade denoted on the transcript will be factored into the calculation of the students overall GPA. Graduation Requirements 1. Basic Requirements Participants must complete the requisite credit hours of course work required for the Master degree. Course credit is awarded for achieving a grade better than F on a course. All courses in Module A or B must be completed with a grade better than F. Should a participant receive an F on a required course, this course must be re-taken at Hult or an approved institution within a period of three years from the participants original enrollment date and the participant must achieve a grade better than F. Those who satisfy all program requirements (include: participation in all courses, payment of all financial obligations, return of all library materials, and completion of all evaluations), who receive a grade other than Incomplete for each course, who have no outstanding Honor Code issues, and who have a final GPA of 2.70 or better are granted the Master degree. Degrees are recommended by the Academic Dean to the Faculty and the Board of Trustees and awarded by vote of the Faculty and the Board. 2. Deans List Participants who earn a GPA of 3.60 or above for any Module are formally named to the Hult International Business School Deans List for that Module. Qualifying participants receive notification from the Dean with appropriate recording in the participant's permanent academic file. With the participant's approval, formal announcement of this scholastic achievement will be made to respective sponsors and agencies. The school is very pleased to offer this achievement award and hopes this award will serve as added incentive for all participants. 3. Graduation with Honors Participants graduating with a cumulative GPA at or above 3.60 and who are in the top 10% of the class will be designated a Hult Scholar and will receive their degree with Distinction indicating the highest honor. Those whose cumulative GPA is 3.60 or above but who are not in the top 10% of the class will receive their degree with Excellence, as recommended to the Faculty and Board of Trustees by the Academic Dean. Dismissal from the Program The school reserves the right to dismiss any participant at any time whose academic performance is unsatisfactory, whose conduct constitutes unacceptable professional behavior, or whose legal or medical problems hinder satisfactory performance.
