THE RECTORS RAMBLINGS

A SOUND FUTURE When people enter the doors of a church, they have certain expectations. Some of them are obvious. They expect to be welcomed and to find an atmosphere enhanced with worship and devotion. Most people expect churches to provide programs for individuals, families and children that are safe and attractive. They expect to find opportunities for growth and education; classes where they can explore and expand their faith. Many look for opportunities to express their faith in action through service in the community. St. Andrews On-the-Sound does a good job at fulfilling these expectations, which could be listed under the headings of worship, fellowship, education and service. Then there are the more subtle expectations that come under the heading of accessibility. This goes beyond providing access for those with handicaps to making the entire facility accessible to all members. Our many floor levels are difficult for some parishioners, our bathrooms are distant from the church and can be hard for some to find, and the acoustics in our parish hall make it difficult for anyone with hearing issues to communicate. These and more challenge our ability to meet the basic expectations of visitors and members. Our goal in A Sound Future is to make our church buildings as welcoming and accessible as we say and feel we are as a community. By doing so we will strengthen our common life and increase our ability to reach out to others. As we move forward, pray about what you can do to participate in A Sound Future.

HOW SOUND THE FUTURE?

MAY 6 IS COMMITMENT SUNDAY Commitment Sunday is our election day. By voting with our pledges we can elect to grow the ministry at St. Andrews On-the-Sound. Over the past decade we have been blessed with growth, but we are unable to fully serve our larger congregation. By electing to expand and enhance our facilities here on this site we will position St. Andrews On-the-Sound to better serve our large congregation and to proclaim the message of Christ to this and the generations that follow us. If you have yet to vote, Commitment Sunday is your opportunity to make a strong pledge payable over 36 months. If you have already pledged you can strengthen your pledge on May 6. By our faith and our works we can contribute to the Soundness and the future of St. Andrews On-the-Sound. Dan Knight Senior Warden

MARKS MUSINGS
By now most of you know that I will be leaving this month to begin a new part of my journey at St. Mark's, Westhampton Beach, NY. My decision to follow this call was made easy by the opportunity for ministry up there, but difficult because it meant that I would be leaving all of you. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for raising me up as a priest. I give thanks to your patience as I grew and developed as a preacher. I give you thanks for your willingness to go on adventures with me to the Dominican Republic, New Orleans and Alabama. I give you thanks for supporting my ministry at St. Andrew's On-the-Sound, particularly the ministry for youth. I give thanks to all to the staff for their support, advice and friendship. Often times, in periods of transition, people have a tendency to withdraw from the community. I would encourage you to fight that urge and jump headfirst into the ministry of the church. The Body of Christ is made up of many parts. If that body was missing an arm, the other would not stop working but it would become stronger and carry the load. I encourage you to become stronger and carry the load. As we move on I will hold you all in my prayers as you go through this period of transition. Blessings, Mark Powell

EYC MAY SOUNDINGS

With sincere appreciation, we thank all of our youth and their families as well as adult volunteers who made this year memorable. Your enthusiasm, attitude and commitment to each other and service have been critical in making our program a success. A big thank you also goes out to our parish family, your support is unmatched. Your assistance has allowed us to participate in outreach activities, attend youth conferences across North Carolina and have a youth program we are proud of. We hope your faith and spiritual journey has grown and you continue to seek what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus. We look forward to seeing all of you next year and welcoming new middle and high school youth.

ACOLYTE NEWS
Big thanks to the St. Andrews On-the-Sound Acolyte Team many of whom served more than double duty in April! In appreciation and honor of their service, we took those who signed up to Carowinds Amusement Park. Everyone had a soggy fun time! A special thanks goes out to parent chaperons and drivers!

GARDEN MINISTRY NEWS

The St. Andrews Garden Ministry will have its Spring cleaning, pruning, and planting on Saturday, May 12th, 9-11 a.m., sprucing up the grounds for the summer season. Everyone is invited to help. Hand tools, gloves, coffee and donuts, and camaraderie will be provided.

CEMETERY AND COLUMBARIUM

Now that the weather has warmed up our grounds are looking good. Several trees have been removed and all our trees have been trimmed. Our landscaper has completed spring plant pruning. Cemetery masonry and the iron gate latch have been repaired. The white brick wall was power washed and repainted days before the Easter egg hunt. A bakers dozen lilies from the church altar were planted in the columbarium the week after Easter. Incidentally only two burial spaces remain available in that original facility. Finally, the annual church grounds spring cleaning is scheduled for May 12. It would sure be nice if the cemetery committee showed up to do some wedding and spruce-up as well.

THANK YOU FOR THE EASTER BASKETS

Many thanks to everyone who filled an Easter Basket! We took 108 of them from St. Andrew's On-the-Sound to the Church of the Good Shepherd on the day before Palm Sunday. On Easter, Lowell Warneke took about 430 baskets and over 4,000 filled plastic eggs to Newton Grove to the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry at L'Inglesia Sagrada for the children who come to the outdoor church service and for the egg hunt and basket distribution. If you are interested in this ministry, visit www.episcoaplfarmworkerministry.org. Thank you all so much for all you do! Kathy, Alice and Billie

PRESCHOOL NEWS
We had a wonderful April and got lots of outside play time for the month. Our Easter celebrations and surprise ice cream parties were definitely the highlight of the month. Ben's mom, Jessica, came to school and did yoga with the 3 and 4 year old classes for the letter "Y". They loved it and were very good listeners. We will have our end of the year program on Wed. May 16, at 11:00 a.m. Please come join us in the church if you can. We will be so sad to see our 2012 class leave us. Summer camp forms are posted on our website! www.standrewspreschool.org Love and blessings, Catharine Hedrick
