Part II The length between the two concrete pillars is 600 metres and the shortest distance between the curved suspender cable and the deck is 5 metres. The concrete pillars is 50 metres high. a) Find 2 different functions What I know after analysing the informations are: i) The curve is a quadratic curve. ii) It only has one minimum point and that is the centre of the curve. iii) The minimum point is 300 metres away from the first concrete pillar and 5 metres away from the deck. iv) The deck can represent as x-axis and the concrete pillar can represent as y-axis. v) Therefore, the minimum point is (300, 5) and its gradient is zero. We can also conclude that the yintercepts coordinate is (0, 50) due to the concrete pillars height. On road to the first function: It is a quadratic function so the general form is y=ax+bx+c The y-intercept is (0, 50) y = ax+bx+50.eq1 Differentiate eq1 dy/dx = 2ax+b.eq2 Substitute the min point into eq2 and dy/dx=0, the gradient 2a(300)+b = 0 600a+b = 0 b= 600a.eq3 Substitute eq3 into eq1 and the coordinate (300, 5) 5 = a(300)+( 600a)(300)+50 0 = 90 000a180 000a+45 0 = 90 000a+45 90 000a = 45 a = 0.0005.eq4 Substitute eq4 into eq3 b = 600(0.0005) b = 0.3 The first function is: y = 0.0005x0.3x+50 On road to the second function: Because the curve has a minimum point we can use the general form y = a(x+b)+c where a is a constant, b is the minimum points x coordinate and c is the minimum point y coordinate. To insert the minimum point coordinate it must follow the general form (-b, c) So, the general form will turn like this y = a(x300)+5.eq1 Substitute the y-intercept (0, 50) into eq1 50 = a(0300)+5 45 = a(90 000)

a = 0.0005 The second function is: y = 0.0005(x300)+5 The conclusion: The two functions are: i) y = 0.0005x0.3x+50 ii) y = 0.0005(x300)+5 b) Calculate the number of vertical suspender cables is used if the distance between two cables is d metres. Note: find the total cables for both side of the bridge. Distance between the two vertical suspender cables (d metres) Number of vertical suspender cables 10 15 20 25 30 I create a formula to solve this question: i) First, divide 600 with d. ii) Then, it needs to minus 1 because the last cable is not needed. Why? The last cable is at the edge of the distance between the concrete pillars so, there is no use of putting a cable there. iii) Lastly, multiply by 2 because there are two sides of bridge. iv) Therefore the formula is: Number of cables used = (600/d 1) 2 Lets get started: If d = 10 Number of cables used = (600/10 1) 2 = 118 If d = 15 Number of cables used = (600/15 1) 2 = 78 If d = 20 Number of cables used = (600/20 1) 2 = 58 If d = 25 Number of cables used = (600/25 1) 2 = 46 If d = 30 Number of cables used = (600/30 1) 2 = 38

Therefore: Distance between the two vertical suspender cables (d metres) Number of vertical suspender cables 10 118 15 78 20 58 25 46 30 38
