PRINCIPALS NEWS AND VIEWS

Coopting Community Members Following the resignation of a School Council member we are seeking two community members to join council until the end of the 2013 school year. The rationale behind community members is outlined below. School Council is requesting anyone who may be interested in being coopted as a community member to submit a 100-150 word overview outlining the skills they may be able to offer to assist council. We are particularly interested in people with skills in governance and communication. Please send these to me via e-mail by 4.00pm, Thursday June the 7th. School Council will then consider all submissions. Coopting allows school councils to bring a person onto the school council who does not fall within the parent or DEECD employee categories but who may have additional skills and perspectives that the council needs. The cooption of community members is a decision made by school council. For example, the council may decide that it wants to use the coopted positions to coopt a member from the local community, such as an accountant, a builder or someone with particular skills they feel they might need. If a school council has provision for community members, the council should decide who it wants in those positions and how nominations will be dealt with, i.e. whether council will seek specific people or will accept a representative of an organisation or body. DEECD employees cannot be coopted community members. Community positions are filled for two years, the same term of office as other members. They also have the same voting rights and responsibilities as other members of council.

Year 5/6 Camp Today I am visiting the year 5/6 students at Camp Wyena in Queenscliff. The Camp program offers fabulous opportunities and experiences for all of our students. The 5/6 students have already been involved in bushwalks, mountain bike riding, bush cooking and a night walk. We will get some of the students to include a report of the camp in the newsletter next week. Stop Work Thursday 7th June The teacher stop work has been approved for Thursday 7th June. More information will be sent home to families next week. Graham

JSC ARDOCH APPEAL As winter fast approaches we felt it was important to continue supporting the important work that the local charity Ardoch does. As in recent years we will be having a non-perishable food drive in weeks 9, 10 and 11. From Tuesday June 12, JSC reps will be coming to classes to collect any food that you have brought in. Items like canned food, pasta and longlife milk are greatly appreciated by families living very close to us, who may be doing it tough this winter. Last year we donated 20 boxes of goods, lets try and beat it this year! We will put a weekly update in the newsletter and in the foyer. Thanks in advance, JSC Cath Blewett Grade 1/2 teacher, Carlton North Primary School
