GAYLORD Gaylord
played host to the annual Big
North Conference golf cham-
pionship on Tuesday, May 22,
at the Gaylord Country Club.
The Traverse City teams
showed their prowess once
again, with Central winning
with a team score of 323 and
West (324) in second, just a
stroke behind.
The Gaylord and Petoskey
teams also performed well,
taking third and fourth,
respectively. The Blue Devils,
sparked by another excellent
round from senior Alex
Dombrowski, turned in a
solid team score of 329 with
Petoskey (332) close behind
followed by Ogemaw Heights
(345), Cadillac (355) and
Alpena (378).
The final 2012 league
standings has West narrowly
edging Central for the top
spot with Gaylord in third
and Petoskey in fourth.
Dombrowski added to his
remarkable achievements
this season with still another
strong round in high-pres-
sure circumstances.
Dombrowski fired a round of
73 to tie for medalist honors
with Nicolaj Brons-Piche of
Central. Coming in after
Dombrowski for Gaylord
were freshman Cam Laugh
and Anthony Tomaski with
84, Nick Fennell and Mike
Misiak with 88 and Josh
Costello with 98.
For Petoskey, Taylor Spiegl
and Caleb Dann both shot a
respectable 81 to lead the
way. Senior Hunter Pulaski,
who has had a whale of a sea-
son for the Northmen, shot
85 along with Cam Ludlow.
Sophomore Shae Whitmore,
competing in his first varsity
tournament, shot 86, and
Jake Dubeau scored 90.
Dombrowski finished as
the top individual performer
in the Big North this season
with an outstanding cumula-
tive score of 70.86.
Others earning All-
Conference recognition in
2012 were: Nicolaj Brons-
Piche of T.C. Central (72);
Gates Muller of T.C. West
(73); Payden Myers of T.C.
West (75.71); Brady
Greenman of T.C. West
(77.71); Pulaski of Petoskey
(78.14); Zack Smith of TCC
(78.14); Cam Murray of TCW
(78.29); Winston Munch of
TCC (79); and Andrew
Hartman of TCW (79.71).
Gaylord coach Tom
Johnson also noted the per-
formance of freshman Cam
Laug, who came in 12th over-
all with 81.42.
This is very, very good for
a freshman, Johnson said.
His time will come.
Gaylord and Petoskey both
compete in the Div. 2 district
tournament at Cadillac

Sweep of I-Lakes in final league games secures fourth spot in Ski Valley standings
By Mike Dunn
PETOSKEY The host
Northmen secured their
fourth-straight Big North
Conference championship
on Thursday, May 24, with a
hard-fought 3-2 victory over
Traverse City Central.
Petoskey, which has not been
afraid to take on very tough
non-league opponents this
season, pushed its overall
record to 12-8 and finished
with a 10-2 mark in the
league.
The determined Northmen
had to work hard for the title
this year against a pretty
tough field of opponents,
particularly T.C. West, T.C.
Central and Gaylord. The
narrow win over Central
reversed a previous 4-0 loss
at the Trojans home field.
Opportunistic forward
Morgan Jons had a goal and
an assist in the decisive victo-
ry. Senior Gabbi Vandenbrink
continued to add to the lau-
rels this season with another
goal in the huge match and
Lisa Dinon delivered what
proved to be the game-win-
ning goal with a rocket blast
that made the twine dance in
the back of the net.
Petoskey set up the league-
clinching game with Central
with an impressive 4-1 victo-
ry at Cadillac on Tuesday,
May 22.
Hayley Fettig, Dinon and
Jons each had a goal and an
assist in the victory and Liz
Fraser also tallied on a head-
er. Maire Carmody also had
an assist.
Junior Kelsey Ance turned
in a typically effective per-
formance in the nets with
help out front from the Blue
Curtain defense featuring
Quinn Faylor, Mikayla
Nayback, Mackenzie Kelbel,
Alyssa VanWerden and
Carmody.
Petoskey opened the play-
offs at home on Tuesday, May
29, in a pre-district clash with
Cadillac. Gaylord played at
Ogemaw Heights on the
same day. The winners of
each match face each other
on Thursday, May 31, in the
district semifinals.

GAYLORD The St. Mary
Snowbirds had a couple good
practices, went back to the
basics and it paid off with a
doubleheader sweep of Ski
Valley foe Inland Lakes on
Thursday afternoon at St
Mary, 13-6 and 7-4.
With the two victories St
Mary finishes in the top half
of the Ski Valley standings in
fourth place with a 9-7 con-
ference record. Mancelona
(15-1), JLAS (13-3) and
Pellston (10-6) finished
ahead of the Snowbirds and
Indian River, Onaway,
Bellaire and Forest Area
rounded out the bottom half
of the conference.
In game one Indian River
jumped out to a 3-0 lead with
four hits and a walk, includ-
ing a two-run single from
Trevor Mallory and a run
scoring hit from Tyler Fielder
with two outs.
The Snowbirds came right
back in the bottom of the
inning. With two outs Matt
Spyhalski singled in Gabe
Nowicki, Nick Harrington
singled to score Nick
Lochinski and Spyhalski
scored on an error to tie the
game and after a walk to
Aaron Myler, Pat O'Connor
put St. Mary ahead as he
drove home Harrington with
the third of three big two-out
hits.
Tod Schramn tied the
game at four in the second
with a run-scoring hit. The
Snowbirds regained the lead
for good in the bottom of the
second. Pat Switalski was safe
on an error and Gabe
Nowicki collected the first of
his six straight hits on the
evening. After a perfect sacri-
fice bunt from Nick
Lochinski put runners on
second and third Brendon
Nowicki helped his own
cause when he smashed a
two-run double to deep right
center to put St. Mary up 6-4.
In the bottom of the third
the Snowbirds increased the
lead when with one out
Switalski was hit by a pitch
and Gabe Nowicki singled.
Nick Lochinski doubled
home Switalski and with two
outs and Spyhalski singled in
two more to increase the lead
to 9-4 at the halfway point of
the game.
With the score at 9-5 in the
bottom of the fifth, St. Mary
put the game away, scoring
four more runs with the big
hits being an RBI double
from Switalski, an RBI single
from Gabe Nowicki and an
RBI double from Spyhalski to
increase the lead to 13-5.
In the top of sixth Mallory
got hold of one and hit a long
two-out homer but St. Mary
prevailed 13-6.
Brendon Nowicki
increased his record to 6-1
(5-1 in the Ski Valley), striking
out six Bulldogs along the
way.
Offensively Gabe Nowicki
led the way, going 3-for-4,
scoring four times and steal-
ing two bases. Spyhalski had
a single, two doubles and
three RBIs and Lochinski had
an RBI double and scored
two runs. The Snowbirds out-
hit the Bulldogs 11-9 in game
one.
In game two, Matt
Spyhalski toed the rubber
and he evened his record at
4-4 with a nice seven-strike-
out performance, scattering
six hits over his five innings
leading St Mary to a sweep 7-
4 over Indian River.
The Snowbirds lit up the
scoreboard in the second
inning with a lot of help from
the Bulldogs. After two run-
ners were safe on errors , a
walk and RBI singles from
O'Connor and the red-hot
Gabe Nowicki, Brendon
Nowicki followed with an RBI
bounce out to stake St. Mary
to a 5-0 lead.
Spyhalski was cruising
until he loaded the bases
with no outs in the third but
he got out of the inning
undamaged with a pop up, a
strike out and a ground out.
In the fourth the rangy junior
struck out the side.
The Bulldogs finally got to
Spyhalski in the fifth. A hit
batter, a walk, an error and
three hits led to four runs. St.
Mary got an insurance run in
the bottom of the inning
when Harrington doubled to
deep center and scored on a
couple bounce outs, the sec-
ond of which was an RBI
grounder off the bat of
O'Connor towards third base,
scoring the speedy St. Mary
sophomore shortstop.
Enter Jack Lochinski, the
freshman fireballer in to try
to earn his first varsity save
for the tired Spyhalski. Jack
pitched very well at the JV
level this year, but his only
varsity experience came in a
couple games over the week-
end in Mt Pleasant, but both
of those games were in mop
up duty with the outcomes
already decided.
The Bulldogs worked
Lochinski for two full-count
walks and then a sharp hit to
left loaded the bases with no
outs, the second such oppor-
tunity for Indian River in the
game.
Lochinski got the danger-
ous speedy centerfielder
Ryan Southwell to pop up
and struck out lead-off man
Nick Howrey on three
straight fastballs for the sec-
ond out. Then on a 1-2 count
and home crowd in a frenzy,
Austin LaVigne grounded out
to third to end the threat and
St Mary earned the sweep.
Centerfielder Pat Switalski
finished with the top batting
average among St. Mary
starters in 2012, posting an
excellent .484 mark with
team-leading totals of 31 hits
and 28 runs scored. Brendon
Nowicki hit .333 with a team-
leading 19 RBIs and senior
catcher Gabe Nowicki batted
.368 with 18 RBIs. Nick
Lochinski laced 20 hits with
11 RBIs and hit .370.
Brendon Nowicki was also
6-1 on the hill with a solid
2.67 ERA and a team-leading
38 strikeouts. He was 5-1
with a 3.00 ERA in league
games. Matt Spyhalski was 4-
4 with an ERA of 3.13 and 23
Ks overall and 3-4 with a 3.96
ERA in the Ski Valley.
St Mary is 12-9 on the year
and the next game is the dis-
tricts at home on Saturday,
June 2. St. Mary played the
winner of Wolverine and
Hillman, who played
Tuesday, May 29, in the pre-
district game at St Mary.
Posen and Atlanta also
played Tuesday and that win-
ner plays JLAS also on
Saturday.

SAGINAW The Petoskey
baseball team made a pro-
ductive trip southeast to
Saginaw on Saturday, May
26, participating in the
annual Cardinal Coaches
Classic at sparkling Saginaw
Valley State University. The
Northmen not only partici-
pated but came away with
the tourney trophy to add to
the schools display case.
Petoskey pushed its record
to 22-8 with a narrow victory
over state-ranked New
Lothrup in the semifinals
and a lopsided win over
Montrose in the finals.
In the tense 3-2 victory
over New Lothrop, starting
pitcher Jordon Smith drove
in what proved to be the
game-winning run in the
fifth when he drew a bases-
loaded walk. Nick Strobel
and Nate McGann also
knocked in timely runs with
RBI singles for the
Northmen and Mitch
Smielewski smacked two
hits, including a double, and
scored a run. Senior Joe
Robbins also ripped two hits
for the victors.
Smith stayed the course
for the hard-fought win,
twirling a three-hitter at the
potent New Lothrup hitters
and striking out five.
Petoskey faced Montrose
in the title game and pow-
ered to a 13-3 triumph in
support of cool Cole Paul.
Paul, like Smith before
him, fired a three-hitter in
gaining the win and pound-
ed the strike zone, notching
three Ks and issuing just one
walk.
Hunter Stinger stung the
ball big time in the title
game, stroking four hits with
a two-run double. The
Montrose hitters hated to
see Stinger at the plate with
runners on base. Hunter
pulled the trigger and blast-
ed away with excellent
results, knocking in four
runs.
The hot-swinging Strobel
was also in Strike Mode at
the plate in the title game,
banging out two more hits
and knocking in three more
runs, and McGann generat-
ed two more hits also.
David Waterson sprayed a
pair of hits, including an RBI
double, and Danny Clancy
cracked two hits with two
RBIs. Pat Antonides poked a
two-run single and Dillon
Kelley drilled an RBI single.
Petoskey played Traverse
City Central to close out the
regular season on Tuesday,
May 29.
On Saturday, June 2,
Petoskey plays in the Div. 2
district tournament at Sault
Ste. Marie. The Northmen
are the home team against
the Soo in the opening semi-
final game and Escanaba
takes on Cheboygan in the
other semifinal. The district
champion moves on to the
regional tournament on
Saturday, June 9, at Ogemaw
Heights.

POSEN The surging
Onaway softball team faced a
pretty good opponent on
Tuesday, May 22, traveling to
Posen for a non-league twin-
bill. The host Vikings came
into the games with a solid
24-5 record.
Onaway pushed its record
to 24-3 with a 10-2, 10-5
sweep. Junior Emily Estep
stepped into her Emmy
Sizzle persona in the circle
once again, blowing smoke
and securing both victories.
Posen, to its credit, did not let
the high-powered Cardinals
steamroll past them. The
Vikings recorded four hits
against Estep in the opener
and nine more in the night-
cap, which was quite an
accomplishment against one
of the top pitchers in the
state. Emmy notched 16
strikeouts in her 12 innings
of work.
Paige Lewandowski twirled
the opener for the Vikings
with help from Anna
Couture.
Slugging Tamara Lupu
launched one long and far
and somewhere into rural
Presque Isle County for a
two-run home run among
her two hits. Sweet-swinging
Sammie Brasseur belted two
booming doubles and Emmy
Estep went 2-for-3 to help
her own cause.
Taylor Chojnacki was the
Viking pitcher in game two.
Emily Delekta had a home
run for the home team.
For Onaway in the night-
cap, it was sweet-swinging
second baseman Megan
Estep the other half of
Estep, Inc. delivering two
hits and joining the expand-
ing Cardinal Clout Club with
a three-run dinger. Megan
mauled a Viking fastball and
launched one that the out-
field fences couldnt hold.
Emmy Estep swung a tor-
rid bat again as she pounded
out three more hits with a
double and Faith Chapman
also helped put the chomp
into the Onaway attack,
cracking a pair of hits.

sweep of non-league rival
Atlanta on Tuesday, May 22,
pushing the state-ranked
Cardinals to a stellar 28-5
record this season. The
Cardinals won the opener
handily, 15-0, but had to rally
in the final at-bat to earn a 7-
6 walk-off win in the night-
cap.
Brett Kortman shined for J-
L from the pitching rubber
and at the plate. He won both
games, one as a starter and
the other in relief, and he also
delivered the game-winning
hit in the nightcap.
Kortman fired a one-hitter
in the opener and had plenty
of support as J-L ripped 15
hits. In game two, he pitched
the final four innings to earn
the win in relief of sopho-
more starter Cole Nagy.
The Cardinals went into
their final at-bat in the bot-
tom of the sixth trailing 6-5.
Senior centerfielder Brian
VanCoillie singled to ignite
the late rally, then stole sec-
ond and scored when senior
leftfielder Alex Payne pound-
ed an RBI single to make it a
6-6 game.
Kortman came up with two
out and the score still tied
with Payne in scoring posi-
tion. Kortman came through
big time, blistering a Huskie
fastball back through the box
to chase Payne home for the
dramatic walk-off win.
J-L played against
Whittemore-Prescott in a
non-league doubleheader on
Tuesday, May 29, after this
issue went to press. J-L Hall
of Fame coach Rick Guild
said he scheduled the games
with Whittemore as a tune-
up for the district tourna-
ment.
Because of the warm
spring, the Cardinals, like
many other teams, have had
the chance to play a lot more
games than usual this year.
Guild, who surpassed 700
career victories this year, is
hoping the extra games will
serve to make his team extra
sharp as it enters district play
this Saturday, June 2, at
Gaylord St. Mary.
The Cardinals play the
winner of the pre-district
game between Posen and
Atlanta while the host
Snowbirds face the winner of
the pre-district clash
between Hillman and

Ski Valley portion of its
schedule in impressive fash-
ion on Thursday, May 24,
earning a sweep of visiting
Inland Lakes, 8-3 and 10-0.
Emily Butcher and Kari
Borowiak sliced through the
hard-swinging Bulldog bat-
ters, pounding the strike
zone and scattering hits to
earn the wins in each game.
Butcher was sharp as a
honed knife in the opener,
striking out five and allowing
five hits. Third sacker Caylee
Lawnichak swung a sweet
stick for the Snowbirds in
game one, pounding out
three hits with a towering
two-run triple. Slugging sen-
ior first baseman Karli Jacob
also put the jolt in a Bulldog
delivery and recorded a triple
while Jada Bebble and Kari
Borowiak each belted out
two hits.
In game two, sweet-swing-
ing centerfielder Savannah
Sullivan helped spark an
early uprising with a timely
two-run double and Chrissy
Smith also smashed a two-
run single. Sullivan stroked
another two-run double later
in the game and Smith
smacked another RBI single.
Lawnichak continued her
torrid hitting, too, lacing a
two-run double, and Katie
Rutkowski ripped an RBI sin-
gle.
The Snowbirds, who host
the district tournament on
Saturday, finished league
play with a respectable 10-6
mark and take a 14-8 record

Young Ironmen close strong with three straight road sweeps of non-league foes
Swordsmen win Gordon Cup with
school-record score for 18-hole round

MANCELONA The
Mancelona JV baseball team
closed out the 2012 season
on a strong note, sweeping
doubleheaders at Manton on
Wednesday, May 23, at
Ellsworth on Thursday, May
24, and at Boyne City on
Friday, May 25.
The young Ironmen pre-
vailed over Manton by scores
of 17-3 and 12-2.
The Ironmen offense
scored early and often in
their opening game with
Manton as they pounded out
14 hits. Nick Balhorn was a
beast at the plate once again,
busting rhree hits and knock-
ing in two runs and Tristan
Waters also put some serious
Splash into the offensive
uprising with had two hits
and three RBIs. Cody Derrer
and Jake Winstead each con-
tributed two hits to the
Ironmen attack and Derrer
earned the win on the
mound by limiting the
Rangers to three runs on four
hits while striking out seven.
Mancelona took advantage
of seven walks and three bat-
ters hit by pitches to walk
away with a 12-2 win in the
nightcap. Kody Pinney put
some K.P. Krash into the
attack with two hits and two
runs batted in leading the
Ironmen offense. Griffin
Borst and Chase Wilcox com-
bined to no-hit the Rangers
with Borst credited with the
win.
At Ellsworth, Mancelona
escaped with a pair of nar-
row, nail-biting victories over
the Ellsworth varsity, win-
ning by scores of 15-0 and 17-
1.
The young Ironmen trav-
eled to Ellsworth to take on
the Lancer varsity and won
the opener 15-0. Waters
whacked two hits including a
dramatic three-run inside-
the-park home run, and
Wilcox had two hits and three
runs batted in to spark the
Ironmen offense. Freshman
Brandon Dingman was big
into denial on the hill. B-
Ding was in control from
start to finish, tossing a no-
hitter, a single base on balls
denying him a perfect game.
The nightcap was much
the same as Ironmen batters
delivered 12 hits on their way
to a 17-1 victory. J.R. Cook
had the recipe for success at
the plate, cracking three sin-
gles to pace the Mancelona
offense. Collin Ordway limit-
ed Ellsworth to one run on
four hits and struck out two
Lancers to earn the win.
At Boyne City, the young
Ironmen won by scores of 6-3
and 13-5.
K.P. was on duty on the hill
in game one for Mancelona
and Pinney limited the
Ramblers to three runs on
three hits while the Ironmen
bats were pounding out 12
hits in their 6-3 opening
game win. Balhorn and
Pinney had three hits each
while Derek Conway and
Waters contributed a pair of
hits each for the Mancelona
offense. Trailing 2-1 entering
the fourth inning, Garrett
Derrer blasted a two-run
double to give the Ironmen a
lead they would not relin-
quish.
Mancelona trailed 2-1
again heading into the fourth
inning of game two when the
Ironmen offense came to life
and scored four runs in the
fourth, six in the fifth, and
twice in the sixth to finish the
season with a 13-5 win.
Balhorn wore out Rambler
pitching, driving in four runs
with three hits and Conway
made sweet contact again,
adding two hits for the
Ironmen.
Winstead earned the win
with relief help form Borst as
they combined to limit the
Ramblers to five runs on five
hits. A nine-game win streak
to close the season gave
Mancelona a sparkling 25-4
record for the 2012 season.

MACKINAW CITY The
Harbor Light Christian golf
team captured the Gordon
Cup on Tuesday, May 29, at
the Mackinaw Country Club,
beating out the field of
Northern Lakes Conference
opponents to win the 2012
conference title.
The Swordsmen not only
won the championship but
did so in record-breaking
fashion, earning an 18-hole
team score of 351. Josh
Walker led the way for the
Swordsmen with his score of
86 and earned medalist hon-
ors at the same time by virtue
of having the low score on
the No. 1 handicap hole.
Teammate Mike Muller
also recorded 86 for Harbor
Light, followed by Kirk Muller
(89) and Silas Lee (90).
"I'm proud of the kids; they
have been working real hard
and have our team moving in
the right direction, said
Harbor Light coach Gary
Mindel. We set some goals
early and have been focused
on putting ourselves in the
right position to reach them.
Districts begin on Thursday
at Indian River and I believe
we will be ready.
Josh Walker and Mike
Muller really competed well
considering the high winds
today. Kirk Muller has really
stepped up his game and I
was not surprised that he
broke the 90 barrier."
Alanson-Pellston was sec-
ond with a team score of 388
followed by Mackinaw City
(393), Mancelona (411) and
Wolverine (468).
Connor Kintz had the low
round for Alanson-Pellston
with a 90. Tanner Keller (96)
was runner-up followed by
Joe Russ (98) and Brandon
Kuchnicki (104).
For Mackinaw City, Nick
Mercer capped a strong
league season with a round
of 87 to take third overall.
Chris Vieau (95) was second
for the Comets followed by
Stephen Hielman (97) and
Daniel Dow (114).
Brandon Scott scored 95 to
lead Mancelona followed by
Christian Elliott (101), R.J.
Homan (106) and Nate
Deveneau (109).

Blue Devil girls take third, boys fifth in annual league meet; Petoskey finishes sixth
By Mike Dunn
GAYLORD Gaylord
played host to the annual Big
North Conference track
championship meet on
Wednesday, May 23. Through
the years the meet has been
run in some inclement
weather and some nice days
as well but in this years meet
the athletes competed in
near perfect conditions.
The Gaylord girls finished
in third place and the Blue
Devil boys were fifth while
Petoskey came in sixth in
both the boys and girls com-
petitions.
Gaylord senior Megan
Carlson earned All-
Conference honors in both
hurdles races, taking second
in the 100-meter race (16.9)
and third in the 300 hurdles
(48.8) and she was also part
of the third-place 800 relay
(1:51.3) with teammates
Alanna Johnston, Grace
Sanders and Katelynn Dreyer
and the fourth-place 400
relay (52.5) with Sydney
Borowiak, Sanders and
Johnston.

Fischer powered to third
place in both throwing
events, tossing the shot put
34 feet, 6 inches and the dis-
cus 100 feet, 6 inches. Dreyer
drove to fourth in the 400
dash (1:02.9).
Its always tough to come
back after being so up for the
regional but our thirdplace
was a nice surprise in this
tough conference, said
Gaylord coach Jeff Kalember.
Beating T.C. West was a
game of inches with Megan
juste dging out their hurdler
and Grace Sanders beating
their long jumpers by inch-
es.
On the boys side for
Gaylord, Craig Richardson
had the top individual finish,
taking second in the high
jump (6-1) behind Petoskeys
human springboard Louis
Lamberti.
Junior Nate Fischer took
third in the 1600 run (4:34.6)
and Gordon Hoyem motored
to third in the 300 hurdles
(42.0). Trae Hill finished
fourth in the 100 dash
(11.51).
For the Petoskey boys, the
leaping Lamberti defied
gravity once again, clearing
the bar at the dizzying height
of 6 feet, 5 inches to capture
the league title in that event.
The strong arm of Shane
Severn accounted for second
place in the shot put with a
Herculean heave of 49 feet,
7.25 inches. The foursome of
Brian Knight, Lamberti, Jack
Touran and Paul Winegard
combined for second in the
1600 relay (3:29.9).
Knight had a good day in
the 400 dash as well, pushing
to a third-place time of 51.8
seconds.
For the Petoskey girls, sen-
ior speedster Samantha
Rajewski burned it up in the
hurdles once again, rocket-
ing to second in the 300 hur-
dles (48.3) and fourth in the
100 hurdles (17.2). Junior
Kelsey Ance, who somehow
manages to compete at a
high level for the Northmen
track team in addition to
playing in the nets for the
Petoskey soccer team,
earned fourth in the shot put
with a heave of 34 feet, 1 inch
with junior teammate Megan
Tompkins (32-8) in fifth.

THURSDAY: Numbers 13:30-32 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 30 Then Caleb quieted the peo-
ple before Moses and said, We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will
surely overcome it. 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, We are not able to go up
against the people, for they are too strong for us. 32 So they gave out to the sons of Israel a
bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, The land through which we have
gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in
it are men of great size.
FRIDAY: Jeremiah 1:19 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 19 They will fight against you, but they
will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord.
SATURDAY: John 16:32-33 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 32 Behold, an hour is coming, and
has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet
I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, so that in
Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome
the world.
SUNDAY: Romans 12:20-21 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 20 But if your enemy is hungry,
feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on
his head. 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
MONDAY: 1 John 2:12-14 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 12 I am writing to you, little children,
because your sins have been forgiven you for His names sake. 13 I am writing to you, fathers,
because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men,
because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the
Father. 14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the begin-
ning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in
you, and you have overcome the evil one.
TUESDAY: 1 John 4:3-4 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 3 and every spirit that does not confess
Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is com-
ing, and now it is already in the world. 4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome
them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
WEDNESDAY: Revelation 12:10-11 New American Standard Bible (NASB) 10 Then I heard a loud voice
in heaven, saying, Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the
authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he
who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him because of the
blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life
even when faced with death.

As a teenager, I hated school and vowed never to go back if I ever graduated
from high school. Never say never. After graduating from high school I real-
ized how limited my options were for a job without continuing education, so I took
classes at the local community college. That move got me a better job in a skilled
trade at G.M. In 1988 I left G.M. and moved my family to Springfield, MO where
my wife and I went to college. After four years I was offered a job in a church
back in Michigan. I took the job, but was a semester shy of finishing my degree.
It really bothered me that I had not completed what Id started. In 2001, I went
back to finish my degree. I have to say it felt really good when the President of
Southeastern University handed me my diploma in 2002.
There is a time for everything! The writer of Ecclesiastes 3:1 said, For every-
thing there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven (NLT). You may
have something hanging over your head that youve never finished. My advice is
that you finish what youve started. Or maybe you havent started that thing
youve always wanted to do. Dont let age, education, or negative people prevent
you from achieving your dreams. Remember, Its never too late and Never

Summer
Moving
Tips
Compliments of
Ed Wohlfiel
Part 3 of 3 series
How to prepare for a seamless
transition
If you're moving this summer,
the busiest season for moving, you
know how daunting it can be. But if
you create a blueprint for your
move, the transition from house to
house will go more smoothly.
Here are the final 3 of 10 things
you can do to prepare for a seam-
less transition.
8. Packing cleaning products
and toxins. Products such as deter-
gents, pesticides and paint are
heavy and unwieldy to pack.
Dispose of as many as possible
before the move in an eco-friendly
way. Call your citys waste disposal
department for guidance on prop-
er disposal. For items that must be
transported, pack them in a small
box within a larger box for protec-
tion against leaks. Dont overstuff
boxes with these items! Consider
marking these boxes in a different
color, and seal them extra tight.
Keep them separate from the rest
of the boxes, particularly if you
have kids and pets.
9. Consider getting full value
insurance protection. If using a
professional mover, it may cost a
few dollars extra, but it provides
peace of mind and eliminates later
annoyances. Investing in full value
protection means any lost or dam-
aged articles will be repaired or
replaced, or a cash settlement will
be made at current market value,
regardless of age. It's important to
note that the required minimum
coverage of 60 cents per pound
would not cover the replacement
cost of more expensive items such
as a flat screen TV if damaged in
transit.
10. Know your rights. If using a
professional mover, research your
rights as a consumer with either
the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA) for inter-
state moves or contact the state
agency within the state in which
you reside for moves within state.
Also, enlist the help of the Better
Business Bureau (BBB) or local law
enforcement if the moving compa-
ny fails to live up to its promises or
threatens to hold your belongings
hostage. FMCSA requires interstate
movers to offer arbitration to help
settle disputed claims.

Womens Resource Center of Northern Michigan
(WRCNM) received dozens of fully stocked purses from
Handbags of Hope, a project created in Southeast Michigan.
The donation coincided with Mothers Day and will benefit
survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault at the
WRCNMs Safe Home and in the counseling program.
Handbags of Hope organizers make purse deliveries twice a
year to domestic abuse programs and womens shelters
throughout Michigan. The WRCNM has been a regular stop
on the bi-annual donation circuit.
This particular statewide delivery included more than
1,000 purses filled with everyday essentials and comfort
items such as a wallet, toothbrush, hairbrush, moisturizer,
nail file and deodorant. The purses are helpful to survivors,
especially those who have been in highly controlled relation-
ships and may not have owned a purse, as well as for those
who arrive at the Safe Home in haste without having had the
opportunity to bring personal possessions.
Its fun to put the purses together and I really like to make
the deliveries, myself, said Jackie Bobcean who started
Handbags of Hope several years ago with childhood friend
Lisa Devergilio. Because they now collect, fill and deliver
more than 3,000 handbags a year, the two women depend
heavily on volunteers and the generosity of donors.
Last year the WRCNMs Safe Home provided refuge to 135
survivors of domestic abuse and their children. The agency
also provided support, counseling and advocacy to an addi-
tional 529 domestic abuse survivors and 312 sexual assault
survivors. The purses donated by Handbags of Hope help
provide these survivors with a little bit of hope as they work
to rebuild their lives.
For information on WRCNM programs and services, call
their administrative office at 231-347-0067 or visit the
agencys website at wrcnm.org.
Crossroads Industries, Inc. in Gaylord will celebrate its 40th anniversary with an open house and a Business After
Hours on June 13.
