000758-036 Pesticide as a factor that affects germination of plant

Introduction

A pesticide is a substance or mixture of substances used to kill a pest. A pesticide is any substance or mixture of substance intended for: - preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest. A pesticide may be a chemical substance, biological agent (such as a virus or bacteria), antimicrobial, disinfectant or device used against any pest. Pesticide use raises a number of environmental concerns. Over 98% of sprayed insecticides and 95% of herbicides reach a destination other than their target species, including non-target species, air, water and soil.[8] Pesticide drift occurs when pesticides suspended in the air as particles are carried by wind to other areas, potentially contaminating them. Pesticides are one of the causes of water pollution, and some pesticides are persistent organic pollutants and contribute to soil contamination. Pesticides can be classified by target organism, chemical structure, and physical state. Pesticides can also be classed as inorganic, synthetic, or biologicals (biopesticides), although the distinction can sometimes blur. Biopesticides include microbial pesticides and biochemical pesticides. Plant-derived pesticides, or "botanicals", have been developing quickly. These include the pyrethroids, rotenoids, nicotinoids, and a fourth group which includes strychnine and scilliroside.

Research question

000758-036

Will the jar with the 5 seeds, paper towels and the pesticide will not germinate or will grow very little and the jar with water will germinate or grow more?

Hypothesis

The jar with the 5 seeds, paper towels and the pesticide will not germinate or will grow very little and the jar with water will germinate or grow more.

Materials

Materials: 1. 10 bean seeds in total 2. 2 jars 3. Paper towels 4. Glass-marking pencil 5. A dropper 6. Pesticide 7. Metric ruler

Method

000758-036

To do the experiment, the experiment consist of: in one jar with 5 bean seeds (independent variable) and paper towels we put water solution, and in the other jar we put the same but with the pesticide instead of water solution. And we observe which germinates or growth (dependent variable) and which not. So we can prove the hypothesis. In one jar you put the 5 bean seeds with paper towels, and then with the medicine dropper you put the pesticide solution and wet the paper towels with seeds. Then leave the jar containing all this resting. In other jar you put 10 beans seeds with paper towels, and then with the medicine dropper you put water and wet the paper towels with seeds. After all this you must observe the seeds daily for signs of germinations or other evidence of change.

Data and Results

After observing for few days, we can say that the jar with the pesticide paper towel and the 5 bean seeds did germinate but very little, and the jar with water, paper towel and the 5 bean seeds did germinate also but much bigger. The first day after doing all the procedure, I did not see any changes in both water and pesticide jar. The second day, again I did not see any changes in the jars. The third day, almost all of the five seeds began to germinate; they open to leave space for the little plant. And in the pesticide jar nothing occur it stay the same. The fourth day, all the seeds in the water jar began to germinate, they had approximated 2 cm. The seeds with pesticide began to open and leave space for the little plant. In the fifth day the seeds with water already had approximated 4 cm, and the seeds with pesticide began to germinate but those have less than 2 cm.

000758-036 The last day of the experiment the seeds with water germinated approximate 5 to 6 cm. and the seeds with pesticide germinated approximated 2 to 4 cm.

Conclusion and Evaluation

I think the results were as I expected, because as we see the chard, we can say that the jar with seeds and water grow or geminated faster than the jar with seeds and pesticide. Also I can conclude that the jar with seeds and water germinated or grow more approx. 5 to 6 cm and the other jar approx. 2 to 4 cm. I can conclude that my hypothesis is 4

000758-036 correct, because my hypothesis was The jar with the 5 seeds, paper towels and the pesticide will not germinate or will grow very little and the jar with water will germinate or grow more. and that is what happened the seeds with pesticide germinated or grow less than the jar with water. I think that my procedure was and went correctly and as I wanted. For me one limitation and weakness was the time I had to do this investigation, I think that if I had more time I could do a more profound investigation about pesticide as a factor that affects germination of plant. I can suggest for improvement in my investigation to do more jars with pesticide and water so you can know the exact growth of both seeds.
