Fence Building Guidelines

General Post and Foundation Instructions
NOTE: Please follow all local building codes and obtain a building permit, if necessary. Remember to pre-drill the profile before fastening the screws. 1. Dig holes - a minimum of 24" in depth (6" deeper than the frost line in your area or in cold, winter climates - 48 in depth) and 12" in diameter (see page 30, Fig #1 detail A, or page 31 Fig #3 detail A). Post hole should be about three times the width of the post. Posts should be set at: 71.675" on center and 67.625" in between (post to post) for Tongue & Groove (T&G) Privacy Fence, or 76.05" on center and 72" in between for Fascia Privacy Fence, or 71.05" on center and 67" in between for Fascia Fence with 0.5" gapping. 2. Compact the base of the hole and add 6 inches of gravel to help drainage. Place the post in the hole. 3. Fill holes with fast-setting mix concrete. 4. Use a level to check for plumb and brace the post firmly with lengths of scrap lumber before the concrete sets and hardens. 5. Use 4x4 pressure treated lumber (rounded-edge) for the post core. 6. Mark one end of the post at the desired height (maximum height of the fence board = 72 inches). 7. Stretch a chalk line to the post at the other end and level it with the line level, then snap it against the line posts to create a guide line. 8. Extend cutting lines across each face of the posts with a combination square and cut the post with a crosscut handsaw. 9. Measure the height of each post individually from the top of the post core to the ground level and cut the 4x4 Nexwood post sleeve (see Fig #2 or Fig #4 in page 30, 31). 10. Slide the Nexwood 4x4 post sleeve down the pressure treated lumber post core and fasten with stainless steel deck screws through the railing insert block (NOTE: check the availability of 2x4 plastic insert blocks with your Nexwood dealer. It is precut and drilled). Metal railing brackets can be used instead of 2x4 insert block.

Fence Railing Instructions Using 2x4 Insert Block

1. Cut the 2x4 Nexwood Rails the same length as the distance between the posts. 2. Remove the middle rib in about 1.5" of 2x4 rails at each end of the rail (see detail B on page 30 & 31, Fig #2 or Fig #4). 3. Use Nexwood 2x4 insert block 3.5"x1.5"x1.5" and fasten it to the post with two stainless steel deck screws (see page 30 & 31, Fig #2 or Fig #4). NOTE: The top rail should be no more than six inches from the top of the fence. 4. Insert a 2x2 pressure treated lumber into each one of the 2x4 chambers. Fit the rail to the insert block and fasten railing with #8x3/4" pan head screws at each side (see detail B on page 30 & 31, Fig #2 or Fig #4).

Fence Railing Instructions Using 2x4 Metal Brackets

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Measure between posts (minus the thickness of metal brackets 2x0.2), and cut 2x4 Nexwood Rail at the appropriate length. Make sure that there are screw holes on the metal brackets. Add some OSI/PL400 adhesive around the metal bracket surface and then insert the metal brackets into the 2x4 ends. Drill 4 holes on 2x4 Rail as mention on drawing below, and use #8x3/4 pan head screw to fasten the 2x4 rail to the metal bracket. Fit the rail between posts and fasten the metal brackets with #7x2-1/4 trim head stainless steel screw on each side.

Fence Board Alternatives

Nexwood has two alternatives for the fence board: using the 5/4 T&G Board (1.25"x5.75") or the Fascia Board (0.5"x9.0").

Using 5/4 T&G Boards

1. 2. Remove the tongue from the first 5/4 T&G deck board as a starter board by cutting along the length of the board with a power saw (ensure the wall is intact). Fasten this starter board to the railings by screwing through the 2x4 (insert 2x2 pressure treated lumber into one of 2x4 chamber), using #7x2-1/4" stainless steel trim head screws (see page 30, Fig #2 detail C). Using hand pressure only, slip the "tongue" of the next deck board into the groove of the starter strip. Screws should be placed at the center of the railing 60 from the long axis of the profile (use #7x1-5/8" stainless steel trim head screws, see page 30, Fig #2 detail D). Ensure that the head of the screw does not impede the insertion of the next 5/4 T&G board. Glue Nexwood End Caps to cover the fence board's open profile, using adhesive (OSI/Lepage PL400).

Using Fascia Boards The fascia boards can be installed with or without spacing for a privacy fence. We recommend using stainless steel screws. 1. Cut the 0.5x9 Fascia Board (maximum height of the fence board = 72 inches). 2. Fasten to the 2x4 filled rail (Insert a 2x2 pressure treated lumber into one of the 2x4 chamber), using #7x1-5/8 trim head stainless steel screw. NOTE: Use at least two screws at each joint (see Fig #4 in page 31).
