Form (Forma) To form the simple past with regular verbs, we use the infinitive and add the ending "-ed". The form is the same for all persons (I, you, he, she, it, we, They). If the verb ends in a short vowel and a consonant (except "and" or "w"), double the final consonant. Examples: stop stopped commit committed c. In English regular verbs are called those who make up the past by adding the suffix 'ed' or 'd' to the root of the verb. SPELLING: a) For the verbs ending in-e is added a-d to form the past Examples: phone / phoned smile / smiled b) For the verbs that end in-e-ed is added to form the past. Examples: ask / asked clean / cleaned c) Verbs that are spelled with one vowel and is followed by a single consonant double the consonant them. Examples: beg / begged rub / rubbed

d) Verbs of two syllables in the last syllable has a single stressed vowel (laden voice), they double the last consonant. Examples: Prefer / preferred refer / referred e) When the verb ends in-y preceded by a consonant, the-y changes to-i being the ending-ied. Examples: carry / carried fry / fried

Unlike regular verbs irregular verbs do not have a marker that helps to recognize past. Fortunately, the group of irregular verbs is formed by a limited number of verbs (about 350), while there are thousands of regular verbs.
