M.Sc.

program in

Multimedia Signal Processing and Telecommunication Networks

at the University of Genoa, Italy

Steps to Enroll in our M.Sc. Program 1) The first step is to apply through the Italian embassy/consulate institution in your country. This phase is often called pre-enrolment by our administration. You should contact the closest Italian embassy/consulate in your country and inform them that you wish to enroll in this M.Sc. program. They will give you details about the forms to fill in and about the documents to be enclosed to the application. These documents may include, for example, your resume and B.Sc. grades. Please note very carefully that the Italian embassy/consulate institution in each country is allowed to define ITS OWN DEADLINE for this step! We generally expect this deadline to be BETWEEN MID MAY 2012 AND THE BEGINNING OF JUNE 2012, but you should check this out very soon with the embassy/consulate. Again through the embassy/consulate, you should also apply for a student visa to enter Italy. 2) The embassy/consulate will send your application, together with the enclosed documents, to the University of Genoa. The M.Sc. Program Committee will evaluate your application to determine if your background is deemed appropriate for accessing our M.Sc. program. In the framework of this evaluation step, you may be asked by the Program Committee to be interviewed through Skype. The interview is aimed at complementing the documents you enclosed to the application and at helping us to evaluate your background. The evaluation can result in three possible outcomes: (i) application accepted; (ii) application rejected; or (iii) application accepted with the obligation to attend additional courses, after arriving in Italy. Option (iii) basically applies when your preparation is overall consistent with the expected entry level of the M.Sc. program but needs to be complemented with regard to a few specific disciplines. In such a case, your application will be accepted, but you will have to attend a few courses on these disciplines (besides the courses already included in the M.Sc. program). The whole evaluation step (including the possible Skype-call) will be concluded by APPROXIMATELY THE END OF AUGUST OR THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER 2012, at the latest. 3) If your application is accepted (cases (i) and (iii) in step 2), you can come to Genoa to enroll. This will take place APPROXIMATELY MID SEPTEMBER 2012. When enrolling, you can also apply to scholarships granted by A.R.S.S.U. (Regional Authority for School and University Services) and to other benefits and services, including accommodation. When you are in Italy, you will be asked by the University of Genoa to give an admission test to enroll in the M.Sc. program. This test is required by our regulations but please note that, at this point of the procedure, your background will already have been positively evaluated by the M.Sc. Program Committee (see step 2 above). Therefore, we are very confident that the admission test should not be critical. The whole M.Sc. program is taught in English and you are not expected to speak Italian to attend courses, give exams, interact with teachers, etc. However, we expect that you will need a basic knowledge of Italian for everyday life (shops, bars, etc.). This knowledge is not a requirement

when you arrive in Genoa and will be assessed later. If you dont speak Italian, the University of Genoa offers free language classes to allow foreign students to reach proficiency level C1 in Italian. After you attend these classes, you will be asked to pass a related test. As soon as the exact deadlines for the aforementioned steps are defined by our administration, we will immediately inform you.

Scholarships Two different kinds of scholarship are available. 1) Scholarships granted by A.R.S.S.U. (Regional Authority for School and University Services) in favour of students enrolled at the University of Genoa. Students who enroll in the program and are younger than 35 years old, can apply to A.R.S.S.U.s scholarships and to other benefits and services, including accommodation. Scholarship values range between approximately 3800 and 4800 (including restaurant and accommodation services). Rankings for students enrolling in the first year of the M.Sc. program depend on yearly revenues. Rankings for students enrolling in the second year depend on the number of passed exams (minimum 30 ECTS), the related grades, and the yearly revenues. Details can be found in the A.R.S.S.U. web site: http://www.arssu.liguria.it/ Push the foreign students button at the down-right corner to obtain the English version. Please, pay attention that the Scholarships Announcement of Competition available is related to the current academic year (2011-12) and the translation is not always clear (e.g., The Master Science program in Italian Laurea Magistrale is translated by Teaching Degree). 2) Scholarships granted directly by the M.Sc. Program Committee. We are planning to grant (through a competition based on merit) about 5 additional scholarships consisting in the accommodation free of charge in Genova for the academic year 2012-13. The equivalent value of the scholarship is approximately of 3000 . The number and the entity of the granted scholarships, the modality to apply and the competition schedule will be defined in some days. You will receive updates and detailed information as soon as possible.
