Data Visualization based on Multimedia Database

Practicum Work plan

Roni Daniel Morais dos Reis

Data Visualization based on Multimedia Database The Task In this project we intend to build a tool to present dated information along a time line. The information we will store and present includes audio files, video files, images, emails, chat messages, sms messages, and documents and related meta-information like names of the people who exchanged a communication, time of communication, etc. Applications will be explained for this project to Forensics, Digital Storytelling, and Education, all of them based on Persons and four information types. For example, in forensics it is often important to communicate who knew what when. Therefore tracking when different documents were written, sent, received and read is important in understanding peoples motives. For educational purposes the systems could support an exploratory presentation of a historical event by allowing students to investigate the role different participants undertook. For storytelling, such a system would allow a person to find there own way through the story by selecting what different people knew about the plot at different times.

Summary of Methodology [1] All the work will be done by me, including the creation of the project plan using Word and MSProject 2003, creation of the database, the design of the Web Page in HTML and Flash and the linkage of the Html interface and Flash interface to the database using PHP, with the orientation of Peter Stephenson, Norbert Schiffner and Wrene Robyn.

Data Visualization based on Multimedia Database The tools that will be used are Word 2003, Free Mind 0.8.0, MSProject 2003, MySQL Setup, mysql-administrator-1[1].0.19-win, mysql-querybrowser-1[1].1.6-win, Flash MX, Macromedia Dream Weaver. The change control board (people that will tell me what I need to change in my project) will consist of Peter Stephenson, Norbert Schiffner and Wrene Robyn. The change control board will review requested changes and authorize work on them as appropriate. This project plan will be updated as needed throughout the project. It will be placed under version control and uploaded on the ICPNM Practicum Forum.

Data Visualization based on Multimedia Database Schedule for this Release The schedule and the Gantt chart are in the file Project_plan.pdf available as attachment of this report.

Risk Management 1. There are significant technical difficulties in building a web site and web application using Flash, since I am not fluent in this software. I am willing to take this risk because my project manager has a great deal of experience with the relevant tools and technologies. Although I will learn, I will certainly make some mistakes and suboptimal choices. I will address this risk by planning in a way that I have enough time to train, and to review the design and implementation [1]. 2. The performance of the system will be significantly impacted by the decisions made during the database design task [1]. I dont have experience with Multimedia database optimization. To address this, i will arrange a review meeting with an experienced DBA (Norbert Schiffner). 3. I could be underestimating the time required for known tasks [2]. To address this risk I will try to work more than what is planned early on, so that I have time to catch up. 4. I could be underestimating the impact of unknown tasks [1]. To mitigate this I will arrange several reviews meeting with my tutors.

Data Visualization based on Multimedia Database 5. I could have misunderstood the sponsor's requirements. Because Im working directly with my sponsor I will ask him to help me describe project in detail before I go forward. 6. I could produce low quality that demands significant rework [1]. That is why I have three tutors, as well as other people who can give me some ideas and advices. 7. I could face major difficulties with the technologies chosen for this project. My project manager will tell me what the best technologies are that I should use. 8. There may be a miss-alignment of sponsor goals or expectations [1]. I will try to stay in line with his goals; everything depends on how hard I will work and his patience to guide me. 9. The sponsor can takes so long to give me a feedback. The solution is bugging him as much as I could.
