The Volvo DH12E is the latest incarnation of Volvos six-cylinder 12-litre diesel engine. It features a turbocharger and Intercooler, four valves per cylinder, an overhead camshaft and separate unit injectors for each cylinder. With a choice of four power outputs (340, 380, 420 and 460 hp) it is easy to find the right engine for the specific transport tasks for which your bus is intended. Torque is 1700 Nm (340 hp), 1850 Nm (380 hp), 2000 Nm (420 hp) and 2200 Nm (460 hp) respectively. Maximum torque is available between a wider rev range that in previous engine generations (see the engine graph), which means it is possible to drive up even steeper and longer hills without having to downshift. Engine functions are controlled by an electronic control unit (EECU) which communicates with the other components control units via the BEA electronic system. Apart from promoting optimum combustion, this also creates entirely unique diagnostic and follow-up possibilities.

The Volvo DH12E meets the Euro 4 requirements with good fuel economy thanks to SCR technology. The engine is also available in a Euro 5 incentive version.

with a system for after-treatment of exhaust gases known as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). In this system, a mixture of urea and water called AdBlue is sprayed into the hot exhaust gases. As this AdBlue-exhaust gas mixture passes through the catalytic converter, a chemical reaction takes place that converts the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapour. The technology is both simple and reliable and makes it possible to meet both current and forthcoming emissions requirements without affecting fuel economy. The Volvo B12 is certified for Euro 4 and is also available in an incentive version for Euro 5 (340 hp).
Volvo I-Shift lighter, smarter and more efficient

The Volvo B12s I-Shift intelligent gearchanging system has been updated in a new version that provides even better performance and the possibility of tailoring the system to suit specific application areas. I-Shift combines the comfort and smoothness of automatic transmission with the sort of fuel economy that can even exceed that available with manual gearboxes. The automatic system, which also allows manual gearchanges when necessary, has twelve forward ratios, changes gear quickly, gently and smoothly and adjusts continuously to suit current driving conditions. The new generation of I-Shift is lighter and more compact and has lower internal losses than before, which contributes to lower fuel consumption. The software that regulates the gearchanging system is available in a variety of versions to suit different applications. The new I-Shift generation works even more closely with other on-board systems. Some of the functions that utilise the new technology in I-Shift: The gearchanging function works optimally with the various braking systems such as EBS, engine brake and compact retarder. Hill Start Aid, where I-Shift works together with the brakes to provide assistance when starting on a gradient (see also the section on braking systems) All the gearchanging functions are shown in the driver display. It also shows the oil temperature and indicates when it is time to replace the clutch. There are also manual and conventional automatic transmissions to choose between for the basic variants of the Volvo B12.
Volvo RS1228B the last link in an economical chain

The Volvo RS1228B the drive axle in the Volvo B12 range is developed closely together with the rest of the powertrain. This means it is designed to transfer as much power as possible from the engine and gearbox to the driven wheels, with minimum losses on the way. The axle is available with nine ratios, making it possible to precisely tailor the powertrain for optimum fuel consumption in each specific operating condition. The Volvo RS1228B is available with a differential lock. With the lock engaged, both wheel axles rotate at the same speed, thus improving get-you-there ability on slippery or soft surfaces while at the same time avoiding the risk of overloading the differential gear.
IFS for high comfort

* Volvo I-Shift and Volvo IFS are not

available with the Volvo B12MA and Volvo B12BLEA.

The Volvo B12 range features independent front suspension IFS as an option*. IFS promotes high comfort. Unevenness in the road surface is not transmitted throughout the axle but is instead effectively absorbed by the suspension on each side. Air suspension is fitted as

standard. The air bellows are fitted on the upper control arm, while the height control mechanism is attached to the lower control arm. What is more, IFS makes for excellent manoeuvrability, with an inner wheel deflection angle of 53. The independent front suspension system found in the Volvo B12 range is based on an in-house developed ball joint fitted between the control arm and kingpin joint. The ball joint absorbs both suspension and steering movements something that normally requires two separate joints. With Volvos independent front suspension system, there are fewer components. The design is also lightweight and easy to maintain. The Volvo B12BLEA is equipped with Volvos high-quality new generation RFS front suspension, whose benefits come to the fore in city traffic. RFS front suspension will be introduced on the LE version during 2006.
Increased safety and less wear with EBS

The Volvo B12 range is equipped with an electronically controlled braking system, Volvo EBS, which integrates a number of safety and comfort-enhancing functions such as Brake Blending, Hill Start Aid and Emergency Braking Assistance. With Brake Blending, all the braking systems (wheel brakes, engine brakes and retarder) can interact to provide maximum braking ability and minimum disc brake wear. Hill Start Aid helps the driver when starting on a gradient by maintaining braking or delaying release of the brakes even after the driver takes his foot off the brake pedal. Emergency Braking Assistance helps the driver maximise braking force during panic braking. Volvo EBS promotes increased safety and cuts stopping distances. With the help of electronics, the system reads off parameters such as acceleration, steering input and wheel speed. Using this data, the system can adjust the braking pressure individually for each axle. Should the electronics fail, there is also a parallel backup system consisting of two pneumatic circuits. As an option, the ESP stability-enhancing program can be specified for all models apart from articulated buses. ESP is an advanced electronic system that helps the driver keep control of the bus in difficult conditions. Volvo EBS is available in various packages with different functions. Contact your Volvo dealer for more information.
An efficient and ergonomic drivers environment

The instruments in the Volvo B12 range are designed with an eye on simplicity, clarity and ergonomic layout. One example is that many controls more with the steering wheel as it is adjusted. The driver has a good view of all instruments and it is easy to find a comfortable seating position.
The brain in the Volvo B12 BEA

The on-board electronic system Bus Electronic Architecture (BEA) has been upgraded in a new version that permits the integration of many functions such as the I-Shift driving modes and EBS. The new version of BEA also offers more diagnostic functions than before, which further benefits operating reliability. The quality of the link between the chassis and body electrical systems is better in the new BEA system, which makes bodybuilding easier.
