The significance of the Compromise of 1850 was that it gave both sides part of what they had wanted and with something in the middle of both groups. The Fugitive Slave Act was a law that stated it was illegal to help runaway slaves and officers had the right to arrest people who helped. It made it that much harder for slaves to get away. Many northerners opposed this act since it was not fair to the slaves and favored the slave supporting Southerners. Fredrick Douglas was a runaway slave who gave speeches and wrote about equal rights. The Kansas Nebraska Act was a plan that would divide the rest of the Louisiana Purchase into two territories and the people would decide on slavery. It stated that the union cannot work if half of the people are for slavery, and the other half are against it. John Brown led the attack on Harpers Ferry since he was an abolitionist and wanted to stop slavery. The outcome of the raid was that John Browns group lost and John Brown was hung.
