Plpe thread ttlngs seal uslng a metal-to-metal connec-
tlon. The metal of the male and female ttlngs deforms
durlng lnstallatlon to create thls seal. As a result, plpe
thread connectlons tend to leak after a connectlon ls
made and then dlsassembled and re-assembled. |f the
connectlon leaks after re-assembly, you may need to
replace one or more of the ttlngs. Contlnulng to
tlghten the connectlon wlll not necessarlly ellmlnate
the leak and can easlly result ln a spllt ttlng or port.
Over-tlghtenlng the connectlon can easlly spllt the
female portlon of a plpe thread connectlon, thls ls
especlally an lssue when lnstalllng male plpe thread
ttlngs lnto cast lron ports on valves, motors, and
cyllnders. Spllt ports are not covered by manufacturers
warrantles!
Leaks can also result from vlbratlon, thermal cycllng
and from loads belng supported by the connectlon (l.e.
uslng the ttlngs ln the connectlon to support
mechanlcal loads).
Uslng a llquld thread sealant for NPT connectlons ls
recommended over uslng Tenon tape. |f uslng Tenon
tape, only use one-and-a-half wraps around the male
portlon of the thread. Start two threads up from the
end of the male portlon of the ttlng. Keep ln mlnd
that llquld thread sealant and Tenon tape are potentlal
contamlnants to the hydraullc system.
whenever posslble, we hlghly recommend uslng SAL
O-rlng ttlngs or 1|C ttlngs. 8oth of these provlde a
hlghly rellable, reusable connectlon. Slnce these
ttlngs dont rely on mechanlcal deformatlon to create
a seal, the rlsk of a broken ttlng or port ls vlrtually
ellmlnated.

NPT Assembly Instructions
STEP 1: |nspect port and ttlng to ensure that both
are free of contamlnants and excesslve burrs and nlcks.

STEP 2: Apply a strlpe of an anaeroblc llquld plpe
sealant around the male threads leavlng the rst two
threads uncovered. |f no llquld sealant ls avallable,
wrap Tenon tape l-l/2 turns ln a clockwlse dlrectlon,
vlewed from the plpe end, leavlng the rst two threads
uncovered.
CAUTION: Teon tape and some pipe sealants are
destructive to hydraulic components. Always use
extreme caution and follow manufacturers recom-
mendations for proper application of any sealant
in order to prevent contamination.
STEP 3: Screw nger tlght lnto the port.
STEP 4: wrench tlghten the ttlng to the correct

when lnstalllng elbows or tees, conslder nal orlenta-
tlon posltlon as to not exceed the recommended TPPT.
A properly assembled ttlngs total thread engage-
ment should be 3.5 to 6 turns.
CAUTION: Never back o an installed pipe tting
to achieve proper alignment. Loosening installed
pipe ttings will corrupt the seal and contribute to
leakage and failure.
Torque lnstallatlon of plpe ttlngs ls not a recom-
mended practlce. Thread taper and quallty, dlnerent
port and ttlng materlals, platlng thlckness and types,
varylng thread sealants, orlentatlon, and other factors
reduce the rellablllty of a torqued connectlon. |f
torque lnstallatlon ls requlred, refer to the followlng
table for suggested torque values.
