Answer any 4 Questions. (Each question carries 25 marks) 1. (a) Survey can be divided into several branches based on their function. Name and define 5 branches of the survey. (b) A theodolite with a multiplying constant of 100 and zero additive constant was set up over a survey point A and sighted on a levelling staff held vertically on a survey point B. Given that the reduced level at the survey point A is 156.400 m, the height of the theodolite is 1.287 m, and the three stadia readings at point B captured through the theodolite inclined slightly upward at 5o are 1.880, 1.500, and 1.120 m, calculate: (i) The horizontal distance of AB (ii) The reduced level of survey point B (c) A land surveyor is assigned to carry out a traversing survey at a construction site. Before any design and physical construction works can be conducted, preliminary investigation on the construction site has to be carried out. Desk study is among the main activity involved in the preliminary investigation. Briefly explain the purposes of conducting desk study and how is it achieved?

(b)

The welfare, safety and health of the construction personnel as well as ensuring smooth construction process subsequently are crucial towards the success of a construction project. Providing some basic amenities are important aspects that have to be considered during the early site preparation work. Briefly discuss what are the common amenities provided.

Roof is a major component of a building. It has the functions to protect the building and its contents from the effect of weather. (i) What are the factors that govern the selection of roof? (ii) With the aid of suitable illustration, name and sketch the types of roof shape available. [8 marks] [12 marks]

(a) Frame structure can be made of various types of construction material. In recent years, steel appears to be a popular choice for the construction of frame structure especially for tall buildings. Briefly explain the reasons behind the popular use of steel. (b) Apart from steel and concrete structures, timber structure is still very attractive especially for low rise buildings. What are the reasons that make timber still a popular choice of frame structure?

Formwork is used to form the shape of concrete by allowing the concrete to set and gain sufficient strength. (i) Briefly explain the basic requirements of formwork. (ii) Distinguish the difference between conventional formwork and system formwork. (iii) What are the advantages of using system formwork compared to conventional counterpart? (a) List out the basic requirements of finishes. (b) Discuss the main difference between applied finishes and inherent finishes. (c) Skirting is a narrow band of material formed around the base of walls which is also the intersection between the wall and floor. (i) What is the main function of skirting? (ii) What are the materials used for skirting? (d) What are the reasons that contribute to the popular use of glass as curtain wall?
