Conventional & Renewable Energy Management Systems For Buildings & Homes
Introduction
With the human population entering to the 7 billion mark, attention of people has moved towards of alternate energy resources including photovoltaic(PV), wind energy, solar water heating systems. But still we are solely depending on conventional energy sources such as micro Hydro, Diesel Generators or Grid Supply for domestic and industrial usage Most of the companies are now looking for the renewable energy Management Systems to satisfy their energy requirements. The only bottleneck is the unaffordability of these systems for regular user. This study will look into the followings.

What are the conventional and renewable energy sources and systems Environmental impact of energy systems Statutory requirements relating to renewable energy systems Conduct household assessments Installation procedures for selected stand-alone renewable energy systems Energy efficient building design How the Renewable Energy Management System will reduce the Electricity bill.

Procedure
Step1 Approach some of the companies and find out their existing Energy Management Systems. Find the pros and cons of these systems. Step 2 Financial aspect of moving from Conventional to Renewable Energy management Systems Step 3 Recommending of a Proper Energy Management System by looking into all the facts in step 1 & 2. Objective Analyzing of Cost benefit analysis of Conventional & Renewable Energy Management System for Domestic and Industrial User.

Energy Management Systems, 1. Saving Energy losses 2. Environmental Friendliness by reducing carbon foot print 3. Saving costly generation for the utilities

A large number of technologies are now available which when integrated into buildings would result in substantial reductions in their demand for conventional energy. 1. 2. Renewable energy sources Energy conservation measures

Promoting Renewable Energy Management System 1. Interest subsidy scheme through banks 2. Technology awareness 3. Environmental Friendliness (Green Concept) RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES Solar Electricity Related Systems 1. Solar Water Heating most economically attractive applications of solar energy and is widely used throughout the world. 1. Forced-large capacity systems (Hospitals, Schools) 2. Thermosyphon.- small capacity systems(Domestics houses) 2. Solar Air Heating water-to-air heat exchanger 3. Solar Cooking Solar radiation gets transmitted through the top and heats up the cooking vessels kept inside the box. 4. Solar Photovoltaic Devices direct conversion of sunlight into electricity by means of solar cells. 5. Biomass can be burnt directly for heat PROMOTIONAL INCENTIVES

Energy Management System of Nikini We also came to know that Nikini has implemented a grid connected solar power system where efficiencies were higher(90-95%) vis--vis conventional off the grid only managed 80 to 85%. Although NIkini is grid connected it operates a battery bank(capacity 50kWh) due to a Utility failure. In Nikini one of the important facts we learnt was that green energy was only one aspect of the plan towards a green corporation. Reducing energy & resource consumption was another critical aspect in 'Going Green'. Nikini are trying to achieve this target through various ways. For example they have incorporated a Rain water harvesting System, Automatic Adjusting Windows, Automatic Lighting System in side the building with the help of LUX level and motion sensors. So that lights will be switched off when sun light is sufficient for lighting purposes. Solar System had been constructed as the Roof. So that the area under panels can be used for various purposes. Recycling household wastes (such as bio-waste, kitchen waste, water, etc.) buying energy-efficient home appliances reducing consumption of water and electricity, Using auto flush and auto taps in washrooms for air handling units, and water management systems

Rain Water Harvesting The total amount of rainfall over an area is called as the Rain Water Endowment of that area, and the part that can be effectively collected is called as the Water Harvesting Potential. Recycling of water recycling is by using aquatic plants Energy-efficient lighting highly energy efficient lamps. The chokes (magnetic ballasts) of tube lights can be replaced by energy conserving electronic ballasts. illuminance level for an application Key card systems in hotel rooms and offices Dimmers can also be used to reduce lighting levels when bright light is not required.

Energy management is now becoming a global issue as effective energy management is a priority focus because there is a great need to save energy and reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions worldwide. Today effective energy management is a crucial issue for the success of any business as the high energy cost at present has resulted in higher production cost. Therefore, our products find difficult to compete globally. The solution is an effective energy management system which will manage the energy efficiently and reduce the waste of energy as well as reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions. He said that if proper systems are in place the energy cost can be reduced by 20 percent and if we can save 10 percent it is equal to building a new hydro power plant. SLAQ has already linked up with the British Standard Institution and System Management Consultants to create awareness in Sri Lanka on energy management systems and also support companies to save energy. A seminar is scheduled for April 20 where all the Chief Executive Officers have been invited and our main focus is on plantations, hotels, ceramic manufacturers and the big businesses. Already there is a positive response from the tea plantations, Hayleys Group and the Ceramic industry. He said that some initiatives on energy conservation has been taken by the Sustainable Energy Authority and these have resulted in a 16 percent energy saving in some companies in the plantation sector. Dr. De Silva said that international, regional and national bodies are actively involved in developing these standards and already the European commission on standardisation and the British Standards Institution had issued BS EN 16001:2009 which is used to promote energy management systems. ISO is working on ISO 500001 which is expected to be issued in 2011. The standard is to specify requirements for an organization to establish, implement, maintain and improve an energy management system which enables the organization to take a systematic approach to achieve continual improvement of energy performance, energy efficiency and energy conservation. The objectives of an energy management system will address issues such as energy supply, documentation, measurement of consumption, reporting of energy use, procurement of energy using equipment and design practices of energy using systems.
