Do you have recipes to share with others? Consider contributing a recipe to the Friends of the Library Cookbook available for purchase at the August 2011 Book Sale Bonanza. Email your recipes for: appetizers, beverages, soups, salads, vegetables, side dishes, main dishes, breads, rolls, desserts, cookies and candy to Michele M. Orner at mmorner@comcast.net. Be sure to include your name on the recipe to receive credit for your culinary contribution. Recipes are due June 1, 2011. All proceeds from the cookbook fundraiser will support the Friends pledge of $60,000 toward the Adams County Library system. Bon Apptit!

It amazes me to be able to write this, but March 2011 set another record for the library system; we circulated more than 67,500 items in the month. I know how important library service is to the residents of Adams County, however, it always gives me a personal thrill to see just how we can continue to grow our services and provide what people want so much. I am also excited about the opening of the Littlestown Library. Circulation there is up 70% year to date compared to last year! In just two months, the library circulated more than 8,000 items. Last year, the Library System saw a 30% reduction in the amount of funding received from the state. Each of the 600 public libraries in the state of Pennsylvania received the same 30% cut in state funding. The Adams County Library System was faced with reducing spending to meet this cut while allowing the least effect on service as possible. The Library System had to cut staff, hours and materials spending to make ends meet. This has meant that we have committed our funding to providing materials in an economical manner. The library has been adding to our collection of electronic information. These subscriptions make information available to many users throughout Adams County via internet connections

on library and home computers. This year, the Library began an online subscription to Newspaper Archive. This database provides digital copies of historical newspapers from throughout the country. All newspapers ever published in Adams County are included. Newspaper Archive will be available at all libraries in the system. The Library System also subscribes to the public library version of Lexis/Nexis. News and magazines are searchable from any computer with internet access; legal information is included when using a library computer. Although electronic sources have become an important method of delivering information, the physical items we have are still in demand. The Library System continues to provide the books, audios and videos library users want. We make multiple copies of best sellers available through a combination of purchase and rental plans. Copies of titles are purchased for each branch, but the rental plan allows the library to lease additional copies to meet the high demand. We can then return the rental copies when the demand is over. By evaluating the needs and wants of library users, providing information through online subscriptions, and looking for alternative ways to deliver the physical copies in demand, the Library System is proud to be able to continue a high level of service to Adams County. We will continue to look for ways to provide life-long learning opportunities to all residents. That is what a 21st Century library is all about. None of this would be possible without the support of the Friends. Your continued membership and contributions make it possible for the library to stretch our dollars even further. FRIENDS FIRST INSTALLMENT

The Friends of the Library made its first installment on its 2011 pledge to the Library. On February 1st , a $20,000 check was given to the library. This followed a very successful fall fundraising campaign. The Friends have pledged $60,000 to the Library System in 2011. In 2010, the Friends were able to give an additional $8,000 to the library in regular support above their $60,000 pledge. The Friends of the Library also donated an additional $2,000 to the Library to sponsor the summer reading bags. Rob Lesher, Director of the Library commented, Thank you Friends! You have helped a great deal to make up some of the cuts we have had to make in the past year. The additional funds have made it possible for us to try some new incentives for the summer reading program. This should make it even more successful.

NEW LITTLESTOWN LIBRARY!

It is with great pleasure that we tell you the new Littlestown Library is well established in its new home at 232 N. Queen St. They opened for business in the early winter and have been enjoying remarkable success ever since. If you remember, the branch had been operating out of a very small space, 750 square feet, in the Community Center building. Now it is a large, airy, bright and attractive space of more than 3,000 square feet. This includes a Children's Section, Community Reading and Meeting Rooms and an increase of more than 9,000 books and materials from its previous 4,000. This is an exciting addition to the Adams County Library System and will expand its services to those patrons who live in the southern part of the County.

TALKING ABOUT BOOKS

Book discussion groups are becoming very popular everywhere, according to a recent survey of leisure time activities. The Adams County Library System is offering a number of such groups and all are open to the public and all meet at the individual Libraries, whether it is your home library or not, but a phone call ahead will help with the librarys arrangements.
Biglerville (677-6257) does not have a Book Discussion Group at the present time. If area residents are interested in forming a reading group, please call Jessica. Fairfield (642-6009) will meet on May 19 at 7 p.m. to discuss HORSE BOY by Rupert Isaacson. Gettysburg (334-5716) has a program called Bring-A-Book which meets every three weeks on Monday at 10 a.m. This is a round table presentation with each participant reading parts or discussing the book they are currently reading. Littlestown (359-0446) meets on the third Tuesday at noon. They are reading KANE RIVER by Lalita Tademy. New Oxford (624-2182) meets on the first Thursday at 9 a.m. and will read THE GOOD GUY by Dean Koontz. There is also a Reader's Forum, meeting at 9 a.m. on the second Thursday. This group will discuss THE GUERNESEY LITERARY and POTATO PIE SOCIETY. East Berlin (259-9000) meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. They are reading THE SHACK by William Young.

Recycle Your Printer Cartridges

You can do your part to help our library! Dont throw away those empty cartridges, bring them to the Library. Place them in the designated boxes or give them to the front desk.
