Camp Far West Lake, built in 1963, has 29 miles of shore line and 2002 surface acres of water for camping, jet skiing, boating, fishing, swimming and horseback riding. Located approximately 13 miles from Lincoln along McCourtney Road, this recreational area features numerous camp sites throughout the shore areas with unrestricted hiking opportunities.

une is Great Outdoors Month with politicians, medical authorities and recreational leaders voicing support for the various benefits that accrue to us as a nation and as individuals by taking greater advantage of our outdoor recreational opportunities. So, if we accept the clarion calls for action, what local options do we have in and around Lincoln? The simple answer is plenty! Here are a few.
located on Moore Road and Green Ravine Drive features an off-leash dog park and multiuse trail. Numerous unnamed trails paved and unpaved also crisscross the Twelve Bridges area south of Sun City Lincoln Hills near the Catta Verdera development. One such trail also parallels Joiner Parkway ending near Sunset Boulevard in Rocklin. And, if you are lucky enough to live in Sun City Lincoln Hills, you have several miles of paved and well maintained hiking and walking trails available for your use. But, as these are maintained by the Sun City Lincoln Hills Community Association exclu-
sively for residents, they can be used only by residents living in that community.
Access to the south shore is through the gate at 9300 McCourtney Road. The north shore entrance is at 8176 Camp Far West Road in Wheatland. Camp Far West charges fees based on the type of recreational vehicle or conveyance visitors bring to the park. For example, a day pass for a vehicle with four passengers is $13. Add a boat and the fee rises to $18. Bring a horse, jet ski or kayak and different fees apply. Camp overnight at the lake and the costs go up. Visitors should contact Camp Far West Lake at campfarwestlake.net or phone 408-5037 for south shore entry and (530) 633-0803 for north shore.

soned hikers class the seven-mile trails difficulty as intermediate and a hike should take just over 1.5 hours. The park is located at 7587 Mears Place, north of Mt. Vernon Road between Lincoln and Auburn. From Lincoln, drive east on route 193 toward Auburn, turn left on Gold Hill Road and proceed to Wise Road where youll turn right. Continue along Wise Road to Mears Road and turn left.
Railroad Bridge trek is a short walk, approximately .5 miles and features a walk across the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge, the longest concrete arch railroad bridge in the world when built in 1912. We have also received favorable reports about the Foresthill Divide Loop Trail near Auburn, which has a 10-mile loop popular with hikers, mountain bikers and runners. Difficulty is rated as moderate.
Anglers included
But, lest we focus entirely on pedestrian activity, lets not forget we have fishing options in Lincoln as well. In addition to Camp Far West Lake, we have Big M Fishery at 280 Westland Road, off of Nicolaus Road, which was the subject of an Inside Lincoln story in June 2011. There is maximum enjoyment there for the entire family. With our proximity to Gold Country and the Sierras plus thousands of acres of lush grassland and flowing streams, we have an outdoors version of the legendary Valhalla. So, it shouldnt take a special month of the year to remind us of our good fortune. Nature is for all of us. Get out and enjoy it.
Folsom Lake
Swing over to the Folsom Lake area and you can find the more challenging 25-mile Pioneer Express Trail starting at Beals Point in the south and hooking up with more pathways in the Auburn area. Rated at moderate to strenuous, this trail taxes the recreational hiker.

while it is young, but once it is established and mature, can withstand longer periods without supplemental watering from your irrigation. That being said, unless it is a California and regional native, it will always need some additional watering other than what Mother Nature can supply. If a label says a plant needs moderate watering, then you will not want to give it either extreme. Dont let it sit in wet soil for long periods of time and dont let it dry to the point of wilting. This really applies to most plants and the best way to determine if a plant is getting enough water is by touch and not by sight. If your soil looks dry, it does not mean it really is dry enough to need more water. The top couple inches of soil always dry quickly during the summer months. However, if you were to dig down a few inches near the plant, you might find the soil is actually moist and doesnt require more water. So, once you have a plant in the ground, run your irrigation on your regular setting for a week or so. Then do a moisture test by digging down a few inches and feeling the soil right before your water comes on for the day. If it is still wet, then you need to cut back on your water. If it is very dry before the

water comes on, you may need to increase your watering. Most of my customers who have killed a plant in their yard is almost always the result of over or under watering. So this is the area you should spend the most time to determine when planting in your yard.

The Lincoln Recreation Departments 2012 summer program is the right ticket for you and your family if Kids Kamp and pool offerings fit your time and budget. Kids Kamp for the youngsters age 5-11 is the main summer program this year, according to Recreation Department supervisor Christine Pelzman. Health and fitness is the primary focus of this nine-week program, which Pelzman said was thoroughly covered in the departments printed recreation guide. That guide can be viewed online or downloaded from the departments website at ci.lincoln.ca.us. You can also use your computers Internet browser to find the recre-
ation departments homepage and a copy of the guide. Before downloading, be aware that this is a hefty 14-page document. But, between the covers, youll find a wealth of information describing youth and adult programs in a variety of categories. Pelzman pointed out that pool-related instruction and activities will also be a main focus this year. Programs start for kids age 6 and under and progress to lifeguarding and water rescue techniques. local agricultural products from local farmers, Billy Jean Salle, co-owner and operator of familyowned Sierra Fresh Farm, plays a critical role. She is the broker and organizer who coordinates applications and placement of the various farmers and vendors who will display their products. Salle reports that she will have approximately 20 vendors for this years markets selling products that include honey, fruits, vegetables, meats, herbs, plants, flowers and eggs. It is, she says, a nice assortment. While local farms from Lincoln, Newcastle, Sheridan and Sacramento will participate, other farms from Watsonville to Yuba City to Elk Grove will also be on hand.
Responding to a question about Watsonville, Salle pointed out that the more moderate, tending to cool coastal climate, encourages the production of cold crops, an agricultural grouping that includes broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Local farms showing at the market displaying summer fruits, melons, walnuts and blackberries include Fiddyment Farms, Twin Peaks, Calolea, Wilbur Creek, Rodriguez Ranch, Bear River Honey for the allergy sufferers, says Salle, and Coffee Pot for freerange, grass-fed meats. Caterer and local baker Kristina Barmettler, owner of Wild Flours, will also have a booth with her baked treats. The market typically

Rock and brick walkways wind through a diversity of species of trees, flowers and plants at Maple Rock Garden in Penryn.
For decades, Penryn residents Frank and Ruby Andrews opened their three-and-a-half acre Maple Rock Gardens to the public one day a year, each time drawing hundreds of visitors. Now the much admired site has a new owner. Last year, Scott Paris, who operates High Hand Nursery in Loomis, purchased the 30-acre property as a home for his family. Since then, he has been working to preserve the Andrews

legacy while adding his own personal style. We bought it because I thought it was a great place that we could use to inspire other people to garden, he said. Theres a difference between landscaping and a garden. A garden is a place where you can do things that inspire you to look beyond what can be.

The Andrews perfected the gardens over a 30year span, leaving behind a diversity of horticulture in a series of rooms. You dont find a lot of gardens that have that type of age and heritage to them, Paris said. Situated on a hillside overlooking pasture land, it is planted so that every part of it makes the most of conditions sunny, shaded or in between. Beautifully planned brick walkways, stone stairways and rock walls provide access and add interest. A deep-shade, treecanopied Japanese garden nurtures numerous Japanese maples and even some bamboo, as a small rock-filled stream gurgles alongside the path. Not far away, a perfectly manicured brilliant green lawn surrounded by a low rock wall offers a panoramic view of the outlying acreage and a large pond in the dis-

tery-powered models on the tracks, according to previous reporting. The rock walls and paths that Paris has added blend perfectly with whats already there, created from materials that provide an appropriately aged look. Theres a close match so they look like theyve been here the whole time, he said. The big trees also look like theyve been there for decades. But in fact, a number of them are new, including many of the Japanese maples, transplanted in the past few months. For Paris, who is a landscape contractor, the variety of hardscaping in the garden displays an idea showcase for what can be accomplished. Its a beautiful piece of property, he said. Its right up my alley. We look at it as an opportunity to add of little bit of what we do to a great piece of (land).

A bird garden is filled with birdhouses, many of them resting on limbs of tall redwood trees. At the back of the gardens, a towering waterfall splashes over large square rocks into a shaded pond, one of several water features scattered throughout the park-like expanse. Adding whimsy, tracks for model trains run alongside the walking paths in a winding, circular route through foliage and trees. On the edge of the garden is a small, square building that houses the train cars and equipment to run them. Frank Andrews was a longtime avid collector of model trains and he operated steam and bat-

Create a foundation
Consider enlisting the help of a qualified investment professional, someone who can help you establish a solid financial foundation for your marriage and your future. The early years of your marriage are a great opportunity to make plans and set goals. Consider where you want to be financially over the next 20, 30 or 40 years and develop a plan to get there.

Money management
A key decision you need to make is whether to combine your financial resources. Are you going to maintain separate checking and savings accounts or establish joint accounts? Perhaps youll decide to do both: Open a joint account for household bills and keep individual accounts for personal expenses. Think about credit

Baxters Event Center at 436 G St. opened in April on the second floor of the downtown Lincoln Brand Feeds building as one of Lincolns newest entries into what is becoming a growing commercial community.
Resembling more an elegant restaurant than a multi-purpose event and party center, Baxters sends a message of dining tranquility with its neatly arranged tables, linens and place settings. And this is exactly the message that owner Don Baxter wants to convey.
Baxter insists that appearance is important and he wants his center to provide a four-star experience for his guests. Baxter describes his new business as a commissary with kitchen and dining facilities that party planners can rent individually or as a pair. The cen-
ter features approximately 2,000 square feet with a commercial grade kitchen and a spacious dining or party room available for parties, receptions and other festive gatherings.

arranging parties. Planners wishing to rent his center would first contact Baxter, who would then put them in touch with one of his preferred caterers. Or the planner could bring in their own caterer. However, Baxter cautioned he carefully screens caterers. Liability in the food preparation industry can be staggering, according to Baxter. He ensures that those caterers are properly registered with Placer County health authorities. Those officials inspect his facilities thoroughly so he has a lot at stake in renting his kitchen. While caterers typically charge on a per-guest basis, Baxter changes a flat rental fee based on the facilities used and the length of time for that
usage. Charges can vary so Baxter encourages planners to contact him directly for fee discussions. The events center provides all the tables, setups and silverware. And Baxter has a few pots and pans in the kitchen, although caterers generally bring their own sets if they plan to use the kitchen.
Years of experience
Baxter comes to his new business with several years of experience, some of it in the food industry. As he recounts his work history, he started as a meat cutter for seven years. Then it was on to Albertsons where he was a store manager for 20 years, followed by another nine years with Corti Brothers markets. Then

he became an electrician, staying in that field for another 20 years. When asked why he opened an events center, Baxter replied, I must have been out of my mind. I didnt know how much work it was. Some of that it evident when he describes party cleanup, often keeping him in the center until the wee hours. Nevertheless, he doesnt shy from the hard work as he emphasizes his goal is to provide a nice place for a reasonable price. Baxters Event Center is on the second floor of the Lincoln Brand Feed building at 436 G St. in room 206 in downtown Lincoln. Phone 343-2670 or contact owner Don Baxter at Baxter.Don@att.net.
Wild Flours Bakery owner Kristina Barmettler rents Don Baxter's commercial kitchen to produce some of her breads and pastries. She also also works as a caterer in Baxter's Event Center. Barmettler can be reached at (916) 663-4151.
Barmettler credits her Mendocino experience with convincing her of the importance of what she called a sustainable community and using organic materials in her creations. I learned to keep things simple and incorporate lessons from others, she said. Some of the lessons came from tourists, many from foreign countries, with whom she exchanged recipes. Barmettler sold the Mendocino bakery in October 2011 to return to Penryn to care for her ailing father. Baxter called with an idea, one that led to the Wild Flours-Baxter Events Center business relationship. property now boasts of orchards, three steers and promise of a milk cow, according to the Lincoln baker. According to Barmettler, business plans for the future include expanding the catering opportunities and possibly partnering with Baxter on wine-pairing dinners later this year. Hosting cooking classes this fall is also an option. When asked about supplying baked goods to local restaurants and stores, Barmettler stated her preference for a business plan that allowed her more direct contact with her customers. Community interaction is important, she added. Holding to that belief, Wild Flours will be a featured vendor at the 2012 Lincoln Farmers Market held each Thursday evening in downtown Lincoln running from June 14 to Aug. 30.

Knowledge is power
Get pre-approved
Get pre-approved in advance and keep an updated letter on file. Sometimes on bankowned properties you will be required to get pre-approved by the lender who owns the property. Your agent can help facilitate this but be prepared to make this happen.
Your agent should be able to give you a list of comparable sales and current listings in the neighborhood (similar in age, square footage and appointments). Some sellers price substantially under market as a strategy to create a bidding war. Your agent should know your target area and have a good knowledge of the comparables.
Cash offers will always stand out and can usually get the property for a little less than an offer with a loan. If you know you are up against cash buyers, you may want to raise your price. Also, sellers will look more favorably on certain types of loans..
Other terms
The sellers dont only look at price. There are other terms that can make your offer stand out. Who is to pay title and escrow fees? Will there be inspections? Will the buyer ask for repairs? How much is the earnest money deposit? Consider shortening your inspection contingency period to make your offer look better.
Find out as much as you can about the property you are interested in. You may have to make a quick decision and you will need to rely on your agent to ask lots of questions to help figure out what the sellers hot buttons are. Dont feel shy about talking to the neighbors or making some calls yourself. It can be interesting what you will find out and this could turn into getting your offer accepted. Have fun with the process but take it seriously and choose an agent that you trust to get the job done right. Choose someone with the right mix of knowledge of the area, who is aggressive but not pushy, knowledgeable but not arrogant and is truly looking out for you.
