June 2012, Issue 69

High Res Low Reps

Dear Members, family and friends, June training is jam packed with exercise science training principles. Firstly, our training focus for toneup in the month of June is high resistance and low repetitions, so what does this mean? The latest exercise science continues to convey the message that training variety is the key to success. Step into Life follows a proven periodization system where the training focus changes each month. Using heavier dumbells than you usually do (even a 1kg change) but with lower repetitions will be enough to train and tone the muscles differently and create challenges for the muscles. cardiomax focuses on endurance in June and July. The aim is to build a solid base of fitness, burn lots of fat as a fuel source and create a platform for increased fitness in spring. June is also a fitness evaluation month which is held every 8 weeks and a great opportunity to evaluate if your training program needs to change so as to best achieve your goals. The fitness evaluation provides your trainer with a wealth of information as to how you are tracking. Take for example the aerobic endurance test. The evaluation includes a 2, 3, of 4km walk/jog or run to test your aerobic fitness. Your trainer will determine which distance you should do based on your time/km. Your time/km and heart rate are measured and can be compared to your last 6 fitness evaluation results. When you receive your fitness evaluation report, make sure you chat to your trainer about a few key areas of your training, including:1.) What are your current goals? 2.) Frequency - How many times per week are you training? 3.) Type What type of training are you doing and do they best suit your current goals? 4.) Duration are you ensuring that you do the full session, including the warm up, main segment and cool down? Train hard and enjoy doing it outdoors. Regards Larry Cohen Director

Congratulations!
4,000 Training Club points, that is an extremely high number and with absolute pleasure we would like to announce that Tracy Beswick from Step into Life Labrador, Qld received hers last week.

Tracy started her campaign of health and fitness with Step into Life in May 2005, and in only her second year had completed 3 half marathons in as many months! Her training workload is just great to see, and her never say die, suck it up attitude sees her where she is today. She is certainly one of the quieter members we have; and that in itself is what Step into Life is all about. Today Tracy it is your time to shine; outstanding achievement, we are all very proud of you.

Health & Fitness

Fitness in the cold weather

Shop around for the latest in cold weather gear. Even if you are still not excited about exercising in the middle of winter, these clothes can get you outside in most climates. You might only have to sacrifice a few days here and there. Remember, keeping your routine helps you maintain your endurance without risk of injury. If you are simply unable to keep up with the exact same exercise routine, find something else you love that will keep you moving. Remember the more you move in the colder months, the more you burn. The worst thing you can do is give up on fitness. Stay flexible, look at your options, but dont stop.

Lots of people who are enthusiastic about fitness slack off during the colder weather. Nobody wants to spend time outdoors if the temperature is cold or raining. The problem is you cannot give up exercising for three to six months every year. Exercising on a regular basis is one of the keys to maintaining good health. If you cease doing it every winter, you are going to regret your decision, because it takes more effort to start again than to keep going. While everyone's tolerance for the cold is different, you can do a few things to ensure that you dont stop in the colder months. How about combining different forms of exercise and different routines that keeps your fitness schedule fresh and fun? Do not hesitate to mix things up every once in a while. If you enjoy your current fitness routine, your goal should be to stick with it as much as possible. There is no sense switching to completely new forms of exercise if you are not going to stick to it. For example, if you like to run, determine if there is a way you can make running outdoors comfortable. There are plenty of options when it comes to insular clothing. Technology has made it possible to spend long periods of time in cold temperatures and new forms of fitness clothes are now available to keep you warm and comfortable.

Train hard this winter and be ready for summer! Introduce a friend to Step into Life & receive a $25 gift voucher!

How to reset your hormones

Theres a lot more to building metabolic fitness and a great body shape than simply cutting calories and exercising. Focussing your efforts on achieving an optimal hormonal balance will often result in breakthrough results. Here is a checklist of key hormones and how to reset them: Insulin helps glucose get into body cells, but high levels reduce fat burning. Reset insulin by eating regular nutrient-rich meals, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy body weight. Cortisol is the stress hormone thats released in response to physical or mental stress. It can trigger food cravings and promote abdominal body fat. Reset cortisol by managing stress, avoiding over training and getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Ghrelin is an appetite stimulating hormone which can drive intense food cravings. Reset ghrelin by avoiding severe calorie restriction or waiting until you are ravenous to eat. Also, get adequate sleep and limit alcohol, both of which can disrupt ghrelin levels. Leptin is an appetite suppressing hormone that rises when you have had enough to eat. Reset leptin by getting enough sleep and not drastically restricting calorie intake. Thyroid hormones (thyroxine and triiodothyronine) regulate your metabolic rate. Reset these by eating nutrient-rich foods, especially those high in iodine, including; eggs, milk, salmon and spinach. When using salt, choose iodised salt. Avoid rapid weight loss as this will depress thyroid function. Serotonin is your feel-good neurotransmitter. In serotonin-sensitive people, low levels can generate carbohydrate cravings. Reset and boost your levels of serotonin with a regular daily eating pattern. Include protein-rich foods such as lean meat, fish chicken, dairy and legumes to help produce serotonin. Dopamine is your prime reward neurotransmitter, which is related to pleasure-seeking addictions. Reset dopamine by avoiding high-fat, sugar treats as rewards and instead generate natural highs from exercise, time with friends or time out for yourself.

Melatonin assists in regulating your sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) by causing drowsiness and lowering body temperature. Reset melatonin by spending time in a dull, darkened room before falling asleep to promote the production of melatonin. If you can, also avoid shiftwork or major disruptions to your circadian rhythm. Testosterone is the principle male sex hormone that has effects on muscle growth and strength. Reset (increase testosterone) with weight loss (in men), adequate sleep and resistance training. Vitamin D from dairy, eggs, and fish as well as zinc from lean red meat, oat bran and cheese can also promote healthy testosterone levels. Oestrogens primary role is the sex hormone in females. Oestrogen balance is also important in men. For either sex, an imbalance can interfere with body weight regulation. Often, resetting oestrogen levels requires medical treatment.

Something still not right? Resetting hormones can take time, so be patient in terms of results. When you get the balance right, your hormones can help you stay in shape automatically. However, if after using this hormone checklist to review your lifestyle, you feel you are eating nutrient-rich, exercising regularly and managing your mood, BUT something is still not right you cant seem to shed excess fat, your energy levels are low or you feel unusually tired, please check with your Doctor for a full review of your situation and hormone levels. It could be the breakthrough you are looking for.

What does bootcamp ~ endurit training feel like to you? (cardiovascular or strength) pick only one. What does kickboxing ~ boxkick training feel like to you? (cardiovascular or strength) pick only one. Would you then consider this your strength or your weekness? We discussed that our Strengths as a group are Camaraderie & peer motivation as described in our video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ewGfTrf1sk Events (we identified that all the events we attend are cardio & endurance based very little strength & speed if any) So even though our short term goal were brilliant by achieving these, we were neglecting long term goals but not focusing a lot more on strength training. I explained at the meeting that we need to be doing strength training 3-4 times a week! Once or twice is simply neglecting what your body needs to be healthy & strong. Using the information above make sure you are doing right for yourself this winter & for your training programs cause if you havent been already then this is the CHANGE you MUST make. See a health professional for guidelines for your abilities towards strength & speed training. The dictionary describes strength as: The power to resist strain or stress; durability. Great descriptions & explanations are listed below. On Facebook I read a great summary of strength training & its benefits, for a better understanding: https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=368409936553 828&set=at.148562581871899.30677.143149019079922.13 51209568&type=1&theater Speed / Sprint training is definitely a Strength form of training. For a brief but simple explanation http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/fitness/cardio/thebenefits-of-sprinting-and-speed-training.html Though we will be working on your strength training throughout winter in toneup & coreball (and by all means if you are unsure about your goals & if your doing sufficient strength training then please complete a goals form http://www.scribd.com/doc/95645646,) Though your training focus over the next two months will be endurance at cardiomax to build a strong base be ready for August where we will be focusing a lot more on your Speed training through cardiomax, endurit & achieveit.
