This is the big weekend!

The Ottawa
County Relay for Life begins at 6 p.m. Fri-
day, June 8 , and lasts until noon Saturday,
June 9. So much is planned for those 18 ex-
citing hours at the Oak Harbor High School
Athletic Field.
With a Disney-themed When You
Wish Upon A Cure the planning com-
mittee created themed laps along with some
traditional favorites for the 18 registered
teams. All survivors are invited to the Des-
sert Reception in the Auxiliary gym from
4:30 to 4:45 p.m. T-shirts and goodie bags
will be available here also.
The opening ceremony begins at 6 p.m.
with Ronald McDonald helping to kick off
this high-energy event. He will be at the re-
lay until 8 p.m. The public is welcome to at-
tend.
Enjoy the food at the concession stand
and special items at the team tents. Bid on
a piece of art or a themed basket, watch
an adult basketball tournament, take your
photo at the old-fashioned photo booth us-
ing dress-up items, eat a rootbeer foat do
some or all.
A memory tent is available for pictures of
loved ones, to write a message or just to re-
member.
The Luminaria Ceremony begins at 10
p.m. Luminaries can be purchased at Relay
for survivors, cancer victims or for caretak-
ers. A Remembrance Lap follows at 11 and
reminds all why we walk and work so hard
to collect funds to fght this killer.
At 8 a.m. Saturday, wake up with a Zumba
class. The Lions Club will prepare breakfast
from 8 to 10 a.m. and donate a portion of
the proceeds to Relay. Harbor Lights will
perform during the 9 to 10 a.m. Princess
Lap then teams will be challenged with the
Scrabble lap which completes the special
laps for Relay. Help your favorite team cre-
ate the longest word from letters collected
by walkers during the hour. From 11:30
until noon, complete one last lap with your
team and attend the closing ceremony.
Remember, we do this to save lives and cel-
ebrate more birthdays. Stay well, get well,
fnd a cure and fght back.
Another correction!!! We apol-
ogize for giving you the wrong
date for the Faith United Meth-
odist Womens Groups Fabulous
Flea Market, Artists and Crafters
Show at Port Clintons City Park.
It will be held from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Saturday, June 23, not on
Tuesday, July 31, as we reported.
They are looking for Flea Market
and Garage Sale Vendors. If you
are interested, call Stacy at 419-
635-2257. For me to make two
mistakes in two weeks is unheard
of!!! I usually only make one or
two a year!!!

Infant loss can be devastating to any family. The Com-
passionate Friends of Ottawa County recently presented
Magruder Hospital with Infant Memory and Comfort Kits
as a gift to families going through the grieving process.
The kit comes with a baby blanket, teddy bear, memory
book and handprint kit, along with other keepsake items.
The Compassionate Friends member Chris Overmyer
experienced the loss of his son and felt a need for some-
thing in place at our local hospital.
Losing my son was a devastating experience in my life,
he said. I wanted to give something back to the commu-
nity who was so supportive during my familys time of
need. Though losing a child can never be minimized these
memorial bags will help other parents collect and memo-
rialize their child. During a very diffcult time so many
parents dont realize what things they may want to keep to
remember their childs last day.
This kit will help them remember the special child they
have lost.

2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
Rutherford, Napa Valley
VINTAGE: 2009
APPELLATION: NAPA VALLEY
GRAPE: CABERNET SAUVIGNON, PETIT VERDOT
ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 14.5%
PRODUCTION: 3000 CASES
UPC: 845517002853
LOT
2012 DOUBLE GOLD
San Francisco Wine Competition
Taste: The nose is sweet, focused and pure with ripe blackberry, raspberry
and currant aromatics and an underlying sense of minerality. The palate is
classically styled with pretty fruit and ripe tannins. We used about 40% new oak
with this wine, mostly French with a tiny bit of Hungarian with a low to medium
toast to lift the fruit. The result is a delicious Cabernet. Its a classically styled
Rutherford Cabernet notable for its faceted complexity, purity of fruit, and
outstanding balance. Of course the best is yet to come as this wine will age
gracefully over the next decade.
This is a wine that were required to keep under
wraps. The 2009s from this source vineyard have yet to be reviewed (there are
quite a few high-end brands sourcing here), but I can tell you that of the 2007s
and 2008s, I have not seen a score less than 93 points (most in the 95-97 point
range) from both the Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate with prices ranging
from $95/bottle to well over $400 at auction. I think these blocks are in the top
3% of Napa Valley pricing/quality and are clearly archetypal Rutherford
Cabernet. In fact, Lot 285 2009 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon has already
won a Double Gold medal in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
It certainly goes to show you how tough things were for growers in the Napa
Valley in 2009, that even a vineyard like this had fruit available.

2010 Chardonnay

VINTAGE: 2010
APPELLATION: ATLAS PEAK
GRAPE: CHARDONNAY
ALCOHOL BY VOLUME: 14.2%
PRODUCTION: 3000 CASES
UPC: 845517003249
LOT
Taste: The nose is layered with orange blossom, lemon curd, and toasted
almond aromatics underpinned with spicy pear and apple aromas. The
palate is unctuous with creamy oak but lifted and complex with ripe pear,
pretty minerality and honeysuckle notes. There is tremendous length to
this wine despite its youth, indicating there is more here to come.
Cameron Condential: Lot 324 is a continuation of our Atlas Peak
Chardonnay program in terms of fruit sourcing, but a change in
direction when it comes to wine style. With the addition of barrel
fermentations, partial malolactic fermentation (about 30% of the wine
went through malo) and an increase in new French and Hungarian
cooperage (to 30%), the resulting style is bolder and richer while still
respecting the beautiful oral aromatics and ripe tree fruit.

freshly cut grass dominate the nose. Lively acidity up-front and subtle vanilla
complement the bright aromas. With a great mouth feel and incredible clarity,
this wine nishes light, crisp, and clean.
Cameron Condential: Sauvignon Blanc truly thrives in a region like the
Russian River Valley, where warm days play with cold evenings and foggy
mornings to produce great cool climate varietals. Acidity is such an integral part
of any wine especially Sauvignon Blanc. This vineyard is located in an ideal part
of the Russian River Valley, providing a dynamical climate for beautiful acidity in
this varietal. This wine is a refreshing thirst quencher and at this price youve got

Saturated black cherry and fresh acidity provide structure to this delicious fruit
bomb. With great fruit, acid, and a killer structure, this wine presents Napa in a
great package. Wicked-good.
Lot 250 comes to us from one of Napas premiere
Cabernet producers with prices in the $50 to $200/bottle range. What we have
here in the bottle are, to be quite frank, wines that didnt make the cut for their
high-end programs and have trickled their way down to us. We bought the base
Meritage blend last fall for a great price and then polished out the blend before
racking it back into barrels for more aging. The nished wine is a dynamite deal-
Napa Valley Meritage from some seriously pedigreed producers for a song.

Cameron Condential: Lot 271 is sourced from vineyards grown in sites

loamy soils within reach of the maritime inuences of the Pacic Ocean.
This wine is a classic representation of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir of the

PG-13
On May 20, nearly 380 people wandered
the halls of Carroll School reminiscing
about days gone by, sharing a laugh or
meeting up with some old classmates.
I never expected this many to come out,
said School Secretary Linda Dick. It was
so nice to see all the familiar faces coming
through the doors.
The school hosted its A Building of
Memories which was kicked off by Jen-
nie Dornbusch, graduate of the school.
Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass
presented a Proclamation to Principal
Judy Peters. Children from the school sang
America the Beautiful (which was also
sung at the 1939 dedication) under the di-
rection of Jackie Seibert. Before traveling
the halls, Ashley Auger, accompanied by
Bonnie Daniels, sang the Carroll School
Alma Mater.
Old class pictures, newsletters dating
back to 1927, memory letters sent in by
Judge Donald Wargowsky, Robert Moore,
Paul Layman, Shirley LaCumsky and Mel
Hoover lined the blackboards for people
to enjoy. A video of memories also played
throughout the day and people also had a
chance to share some if there own.
At the closing, OHHS Jazz Band en-
tertained attendees. Everyone gathered
outside and watched as the Boy Scouts
from Troup No. 370 lowered the fag. Im
sure many happy memories were going
through their heads. Closing comments
were shared by Peters and a balloon release
ended the wonderful day of celebrating 73
years of memories.

KERSTENS KORNER GETS SPECIAL VISITORS
Kerstens Korner Nursery School recently had some special guests when the Toledo
Zoo Educational Department came for a visit. Josh from the zoo brought three special
friends with him for the children to see: a turtle, lizard and a guinea pig. During his
talk, children learned about three different types of habitats animals live in: African
savanna, ocean and rainforest. Josh brought some items
for the children to touch such as skin from a monkey, a
sharks jaw, a stinger from a sting ray, puffer fsh, an el-
ephant ear and snake skin. He explained to the children
how having these items allow people to know how they
feel and work.
CONGRATS PRESCHOOL GRADS
Port Clinton Preschools 45th class has graduated from the facility at 135 Adams St., in
the Trinity United Methodist building. As local high school students graduate and get
ready for higher education, the youngest of area students are also enjoying their sum-
mer vacation. The preschoolers shared their program with proud parents, grandpar-
ents and friends, as they celebrated their accomplishments by singing songs and hip
hopping to the alphabet song. Congratulations to the graduates of 2012. For informa-
tion about enrolling your child for 2012-13, call 419-341-2383. Registration forms are
available from the Ida Rupp Library.
It may be summer vacation for most
students at PCHS, but those involved in
DECA are busy actively seeking sponsor-
ship donations. These donations will help
send students to the Summer Leadership
Retreat, held July 13-16, at FFA Camp
Muskingum in Carrollton, Ohio. Students
will also be raising money for the 2012-13
school year to help defray the costs of trav-
el, registration and to help buy new DECA
blazers worn at competitions.
Last year, PCHS DECA students attended
a conference in Philadelphia where stu-
dents learned team building skills, attend-
ed workshops, and participated in mock
business competitions.
This year students would like to attend
a conference in either Washington, DC or
Chicago. Sponsor business names will be
displayed on the back of a DECA T-shirt
and sign boards, as well as being a busi-
ness tax deduction. If you havent received
a call or visit from one of the PCHS DECA
members, interested donors may contact
DECA Advisor Bill Hollister at 419-260-
9068 or go online to www.pccsd.net and
download a sponsorship form under the News link.

Davenport is a native of Catawba Is-

ences of growing up near the shores
of Lake Erie, some nostalgic, some
funny. Songs like Leaving an Island
in My Wake, APB at PIB and We
Did Everything That Ends in ing but
Fish, are a few. He also has written
many a love song and a few country
songs such as You Look Stupid in a

on his dads Lyman.

Marblehead resident Nelda Nel
Adcock will hold a book signing for
her recently published childrens
book, My Firelands Adventure,
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June
9, at the Wolcott Keepers House,
9999 Bayshore Road, Marblehead.
Adcock was inspired to write the
book while volunteering at the Keep-
ers House annex and gift shop, and
enjoying the aroma of apple scones
being prepared next door on the
Keepers House freplace by fellow
docent Ray Machar. She wove the idea
of the tempting aroma into a story
about Selima Wolcott, Benajah Wol-
cotts younger daughter, and a young
Indian boy. Selima, who was unhappy
about leaving her home and friends
in Connecticut to go to the wild Fire-
lands frontier, meets the young boy
and shares an adventure. She learns a
few things along the way, as will Nels
young readers the retired teacher
admits hiding many interesting facts
in the story.
While reading the book in several
area classrooms, she was further in-
spired to write a play that the children
can perform. She looks forward to
sharing it with more classrooms.
The book is illustrated by local art-
ist David Schwan and the story and
pictures will appeal to children be-
yond the 7-10 age group at which it is
aimed. Adcock, who has degrees from
Capital University and Penn State,
has taught in central Ohio, the Pana-
ma Canal Zone and at the University
of Dayton. Adcock and her husband
Carl (Fred) are also quite adventur-
ous. They once drove all the way from
the Canal Zone to Ohio.
The Keepers House is open 11 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Saturday for the book sign-
ing, freplace cooking demonstra-
tions by Ray Machar and docent led
house tours. The regular weekday
open houses start Wednesday, June
11, from 1 to 5 p.m. The book may
be purchased at the Keepers House
gift shop, the Lakeside book store,
Ex Libris in Marblehead and soon at
Perrys Monument gift shop.
Visit www.thekeepershouse.org

House.

Celebrate
Founders Day
Terra State Community College
presents a unique festival experience
to Northwest Ohio on June 15-16.
With the launch of Terras new Jazz
and American Music Studies degree
program in the fall, this new summer
festival celebrates American music
styles from 1920-today with featured
bands from around the area and nu-
merous guest artists.
There are so many musical genres
to choose from that have come from
the birth of jazz and evolved into to-
days pop music that its hard to cap-
ture all of the styles in just one week-
end, said Terras rock n roll history
instructor, John Cipiti. With our in-
augural festival, we are primarily fo-
cusing our attention on jazz, rock,
R&B, blues and funk this year, and
look forward to focusing on many
other styles such as gospel, country,
folk, musical theater and more in the
coming years.
The Jazz and American Music Fes-
tival features festival headliner Doug
Johns, funk bassist from Cleveland.
Earning rave reviews from Bass Play-
er Magazine as well as the bass com-
munity, Johns is an accomplished
bass player, composer, clinician and
bandleader. His raw presence, en-
ergy and all-around crowd-wowing
prowess can be heard on numerous
recordings and stages.
Believing that a good musician sur-
rounds himself with great musicians,
Johns has had the privilege of work-
ing with such icons as Buddy Miles,
Chuck Rainey, Grammy-winning
producer Aaron Lindsey, and many
others.

FRIDAY, JUNE 15
The festival opens with the JAZZ
LEGENDS concert on at 7:30 p.m.
at the Port Clinton Performing Arts
Center in Port Clinton. The concert is
presented by the Terra State Jazz Band
under the direction of Jeff Blanchard

The Alzheimers Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter,
is hosting the professional development program, Ethi-
cal Decisions, Spirituality and Dementia, from 9 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Magruder Hospital, 615
Fulton St., Port Clinton. This half-day workshop will help
spiritual leaders of faith-based communities and other in-
terested persons to increase their knowledge of dementia
and reach out more effectively to people with memory
loss disorders and their families.
For many people with Alzheimers disease, participating
in spiritual practices was an integral part of their younger
years. Continued spiritual support throughout the course
of the disease can provide a great deal of comfort and
meaning to these people and their families.
The program has been approved for three contact hours
of continuing professional education. The registration fee
is $25, payable at the door. Participants can feel free to
bring their breakfast or lunch. Light refreshments will be
served. To register, call 800-272-3900.

The Ottawa County Health Department has wel-
comed Jessica Spencer, of Port Clinton, to its nursing
staff. Spencer began work Feb. 21, concentrating her
efforts in the home health care division.
I love the elderly, geriatric pa-
tients, said Spencer, noting regu-
lar visits can often forge special
bonds.
Diane Kokinda, Director of
Nursing, said Spencer underwent
an orientation period in which
she was teamed with a fellow reg-
istered nurse. She now makes the
health care visits on her own.
Spencers position with the
health department is part-time.
She divides her time between the
health department and duties in the labor and delivery
unit at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky.
Previously, she also worked at Bellevue Hospital and
Bay Park Community Hospital.
Spencer, a Milan native, is a graduate of Edison High
School. She obtained her degree through Ohio Univer-
sity and continues her education currently through an
OU online program.
Spencer and her husband, Mike, a math teacher at
Port Clinton High School, have two children.

Elmwood Communities has now grown their Elmwood
team to an amazing 700+ employees. This includes all
employees at Elmwood Healthcare Center at The Springs
Specialty/ LTAC (Long-Term Acute Care) Hospital; Skilled
Nursing and Respiratory Nursing units on the West cam-
pus in Green Springs; Elmwood Nursing Home and Elm-
wood Assisted Living at The Springs-East campus; Elm-
woods Assisted Living communities in Tiffn, Fremont,
and New Bremen; and Wynn-Reeth, Inc. (in association
with Elmwood Centers in Green Springs.
Due to new programs and services, over 100 new em-
ployees have joined the Elmwood team since early 2011.
Kathy Hunt, owner and CEO of Elmwood Communi-
ties feels this is quite an achievement for the family-owned
company that got its start in Green Springs, Ohio in 1974.
Having over 700 employees throughout our Ohio facili-
ties is just amazing! But ensuring that each and every one
of our employees knows and performs what is expected
of them is the real challenge! stated Hunt. That is why
we have some great employee training programs in place.
Elmwood at The Springs Healthcare Centers Com-
mitment-To-Excellence Mentor Program is designed to
help welcome, train, and nurture new employees for all
job classifcations. This hands-on, orientation program
has helped new employees adjust more easily to their new
position, in turn, helping them to gain self-confdence
and lessen their nervousness and insecurities that may
come with a new job. The individual, one-on-one train-
ing assures that all new employees receive consistent and
thorough training, so everyone knows what is expected of
them and how to fulfll each job requirement.
Elmwood recently re-certifed 13 current mentors, all
State Tested Nursing Assistants (STNA). These mentors
will continue to be the Go-To employees for new direct
care staff in Elmwoods Skilled Nursing Units.

Firelands Regional Medical Center was recently recog-
nized with the Melvin Creeley Environmental Leadership
Award. Awarded by the Ohio Hospital Association. Fire-
lands was one of 10 hospitals in Ohio to be recognized
for promoting sound environmental practices through
environmental stewardship and exemplifying the best
practices for other hospitals to follow.
Firelands is excited to be recognized for our efforts
in being more environmentally friendly, said Richard
Brown, Director of Environmental Services at Firelands
Regional Medical Center. In 2011 alone, Firelands Re-
gional Medical Center recycled over 74 tons of cardboard/
plastic/glass and 81 tons of paper.
The award is named after the retired president and CEO
of East Liverpool City Hospital, Melvin Creeley, who
chaired OHAs Environmental Leadership Council from
its inception in 2001 and 2010. As an ENERGY STAR
partner, OHA is also working to protect the environment.
OHAs Team Green is collecting electronics such as com-
puters, CDs, radios and other electronic devices to be re-
cycled. OHA recently received the Ohio Alliance for the
Environment Award from the Environmental Education
Council of Ohio, which honors a business or industry that
is dedicated to fostering a climate of cooperation for re-
solving environmental issues. And in an initiative begun
last year, the OHA Energy Program is assisting hospitals
to become more energy effcient.

BY YANEEK SMITH
After a strong fnish to their season, the
Danbury Lakers saw two players earn-frst
team honors in the Toledo Area Athletic
Conference (TAAC) last week.
Seniors Lucas Kennedy and Cory Schenk
were both named to the frst team while se-
nior Dalton Chapman and freshman Chase
Botson earned second-team honors. Senior
pitcher Brandon Burke earned honorable-
mention status.
It was very well-deserved, said Danbury
head coach Adam Steinbrick. You cant
vote for your own (players), so youve got to
have the respect of the other coaches. Its a
strong conference.
The Lakers, who had a 12-13 overall record
and a 5-7 mark in the TAAC, fnished the
season on a hot streak, going 9-4 over the
seasons fnal 13 games. Danburys season
ended in the sectional tournament when
the Lakers fell, 4-1 to Toledo Christian.
The Lakers will lose six seniors, Chapman,
Burke, Kennedy, Schenk, Caleb Helline and
John Bunce, a group that has accomplished
quite a bit in its time. They won 49 games
in their four-year run, a school record, and
won a sectional title last season.
Steinbrick summed up what the group has
meant to the program.
Theyve just done a tremendous job and
theyre going to be dearly missed. Theyve
set some kids for our young kids to follow
and were excited about the future with our
numbers and whats coming up.
We had 10 freshman of our 24 kids in the
program; a bunch of young kids will get an
opportunity next year.

Over the weekend, Port Clinton senior
Emaleigh Dunn competed in the Divi-
sion II Track & Field Championships at
Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Co-
lumbus, fnishing seventh in the discus
and ninth in the shot put.
In the discus, Dunn had a throw of 123
feet, 4 inches to go with a 40-04.50 toss in
the shot put, an impressive feat that will
sustain her status in school history as one
of Port Clintons top performers.
It was actually the second consecutive
season in which she advanced to Colum-
bus. Last year, Dunn fnished 11th in the
shot put (38-05.50) while teammate Al-
lie Reynolds came in second in the discus
(129-09).
Needless to say, its been quite a year
for Dunn, who was the SBC Champion
in the shot put and the second-place fn-
isher in the discus.
A number of other area competitors
fared well at the state meet, led by Hu-
ron senior Treyvon Matthews, who won
the title in the 110 hurdles with a time
of 14.30 and Bellevues Matt Rowland
repeated as champion in the pole vault
(16-01.00). Genoas Logan Bryer was sec-
ond in the discus (177-04) and Perkins
Aaron Mawhirter was fourth, fnishing
with a throw of 166-03 while teammate
Michael Ebert was fourth in the shot put
(55-05.75).
Clyde senior Adam Turner was sixth
in the 400 (49.63), Perkins senior Bill
Fial was sixth in the 300 hurdles (40.09),
Clydes Ben Wollenslegel was ninth in
the high jump (6-02.00) and Edisons
Stephen Shephard was 13th in the 1600
(4:46.94). In the pole vault, Hurons Ma-
son Majoy fnished 11th and Bellevues
Travis Brake was 12th.
Edison and Perkins 4x800 relay teams
fnished third and eighth, respectively.
The Chargers quartet of Dallas Risner,
Lucas Wallace, Luke Pierce and Stephen
Shephard ran a time of 8:02.52 and the
Pirate squad of Michael Decker, Chris
Johnson, Cory Pfanner and Cody Priebe
fnished in 8:06.28. Clydes 4x400 relay
team of Alex Webber, Collin Rieman,
Isaac Bouyack and Turner was 13th
(3:29.66) and Perkins 4x200 team of
Dale Irby, Mitch Benkey, Austin Sparks
and Fial was 14th (1:32.13).
On the girls side, Vermilions 4x200 me-
ter relay team of AuBree LaForce, Han-
nah Bartlome, Mallory Morris and Emily
Cunningham (1:41.79) and the 4x100 re-
lay squad of the same members was sec-
ond (48.98). Cunningham also fnished
third in the 200, running a time of 25.63
and Bartlome was second in the high
jump with a leap of 5-04.00. As a team,
the Sailors were fourth, fnishing with 33
points. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary was
frst with 55 points, followed by Colum-
bus Eastmoor Academy (46) and Day-
ton Cahminade-Julienne (43). The Lady
Skins, because of the efforts of Dunn,
fnished tied for 58th with two points.

Ochs, was recently chosen as a member of
the University of Cincinnatis Black Var-
sity Cheerleading Team for the 2012-2013
season.
Ochs was selected from a feld of more
than 50 competitors who tried out for the
upcoming season. The competitive three-
day tryout process held at UC was direct-
ed by UC head cheerleading coach, Tabby
Fagan, her staff and other judges. The
team tryouts included interviews, tum-
bling and cheer partner stunting drills,
along with other related physical endur-
ance testing.
I am thrilled to be chosen as a mem-
ber of the varsity cheerleading team at
UC and I am also excited to be a student-

Financial Focus
with GARY COON
Automatic investing can pay off for you
To achieve investment suc-
cess, you dont have to start out
with a huge sum or get lucky
by picking hot stocks. In fact,
very few people actually travel
those two routes. But in working
toward your investment goals,
you need to be persistent and
one of the best ways to demon-
strate that persistence is to invest
automatically.
How do you become an auto-
matic investor? You simply need
to have your bank automatically
move money each month from a
checking or savings account into
the investments of your choice.
When youre frst starting out
in the working world, you may
not be able to afford much, but
any amount even if its just
$50 or $100 a month will be
valuable. Then, as your career
progresses and your income
rises, you can gradually increase
your monthly contributions.
By becoming an automatic
investor, you can gain some key
benefts, including these:
Discipline Many people
think about investing but decide
to wait until they have a little
extra cash. Before they realize
it, theyve used the money for
other purposes. When you invest
automatically, youre essentially
taking a spending decision out
of your hands. And as you see
your accounts grow over time,
your investment discipline will
be self-reinforcing.
Long-term focus Theres
never any shortage of events
political crises, economic down-
turns, natural disasters that
cause investors to take a time-
out from investing. Yet if you
head to the investment sidelines,
even for a short while, you might
miss out on some good opportu-
nities. By investing automatically
each month, youll maintain a
long-term focus.
Potential for reduced invest-
ment costs If you invest the
same amount of money each
month into the same invest-
ments, youll automatically be a
smart shopper. When prices
drop, your monthly investment
will buy more shares, and when
prices rise, youll buy fewer
shares just as youd prob-
ably buy less of anything when
prices are high. Over time, this
type of systematic investment
typically results in lower costs
per share. Furthermore, when
you invest systematically, youre
less likely to constantly buy and
sell investments in an effort to
boost your returns. This type of
frequent trading is often inef-
fective and it can raise your
overall investment costs with
potential fees, commissions and
taxes. (Keep in mind, though,
that systematic investing does
not guarantee a proft or protect
against loss. Also, youll need the
fnancial resources available to
keep investing through up and
down markets.)
Clearly, automatic investing
offers some major advantages to
you as you seek to build wealth.
Of course, if youre contributing
to a 401(k) or other employer-
sponsored retirement plan,
youre already automatically
investing because money is taken
out of your paycheck at regu-
lar intervals to go toward the
investments youve chosen in
your plan. But by employing
automatic investing techniques
to other vehicles, such as an
Individual Retirement Account
(IRA), you can continue your
progress toward your long-term
goals, including retirement.
So, do what it takes to become
an automatic investor. Its easy,
its smart and it can help you
work toward the type of future
youve envisioned.
