Introduction To Operations Research Models - MATH 337 Winter 2012 Instructor Alan Ableson JEFF 505 ableson@mast.queensu.

Course Description The course will have students working with probability distributions, simulation, Markov chains, queuing theory, dynamic programming, and inventory theory. Use of computer-based computational tools (e.g. Excel, R or MATLAB) will be required to solve some problems. Support will be provided to those unfamiliar with computer-based tools. Assignments: will be due Tuesdays in class. A single assignment solution may be submitted by groups of up to 3 students. In-Class Tests: will take place in weeks 5 and 9 in the Tuesday class. (Feb 7, Mar 13). The questions will be based on the assignment problems given out during the term, of a type solvable by hand or with the aid of a calculator. Computer-Available Test: will take place an evening early in Week 11 (Mar 26-30). The questions will be related to assignment problems, but will be such that a computer will be required to solve them eciently. Organizing Learning Materials: will provide links, summaries, or new materials that would support classmates learning of the material, supplemental to the lecture material. Online Prep Quizzes: Before each Thursday class, students will complete a short online quiz which tests the concepts covered that week. Some reference may need to be made to the learning materials organized by their fellow students.

Computer-Available Test: will take place one evening early in Week 11 (Mar 26-30). The questions will be related to assignment problems, but will be such that a computer will be required to solve them eciently. Final Exam: will be 3 hours long, in the regular exam period. Questions will be based on the assignment problems given out during the term, of a type solvable by hand or with the aid of a calculator. Academic Integrity Any breaches of academic integrity will be handled according to the students home Faculty regulations. Specically, students should be aware that: In assignments, each group must write their nal copy of the submission independently. In the tests and exam, only the resources provided explicitly in the test or exam itself can be used. Academic Integrity Penalties: Any nding of dishonesty or plagiarism in the assignments will result in a grade of zero for the assignment for any groups involved. Any nding of academic dishonesty in a test will result in a grade of zero on two tests. Any nding of academic dishonesty in the nal exam will result in a zero in the course. Furthermore, all ndings of academic dishonesty will be reported in writing to the students home Faculty. Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the regulations concerning academic integrity and for ensuring that their assignments conform to the principles of academic integrity. Assignments will not be accepted after Thursday 4:30 PM.

Final Letter Grade All components of this course will receive numerical percentage marks.
