INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
Overview: The motorcycle industry in the Pakistan is progressing so well that manufacturing of motorcycles has touched the 0.7 million mark in financial year 2005-06.It is one of the most growing sectors in the Pakistani industry .With the rising demand of motorcycles every year, the industry shows a huge potential in both the local and international market. Motorcycle Industry estimates show that last year a total of over 750000 motorcycles were sold in the country. The industry has been experiencing a healthy growth rate of around 30% per year for the past 4-5 years. Pakistan came at number seven with a production of 750,000 units of motorcycles constituting to 2% of the global total. Currently Atlas Honda in Pakistan hold first place in terms of sale and market share, the other Japanese brands being manufactured in Pakistan include Yamaha and Suzuki. 5 The most successful design among the Japanese brands has been the Honda 70CC which enjoys tremendous popularity on account of its fuel economy, resale and low maintenance features. Background:
Atlas Honda Limited is a joint venture between the Atlas Group and Honda Motor Co., Japan. The company established by the merger of Panjdarya Limited and Atlas Autos Ltd. in 1988. Both these motorcycle-manufacturing concerns established by the Atlas Group. In addition, a third concern, Atlas Pak Ltd. was taken over by the Government of Bangladesh. Atlas Honda Limited manufactures and markets Honda motorcycles in collaboration with Honda Motor Company. The Company also manufactures various hi-tech components in-house in collaboration with leading parts manufacturers like Showa Atsumitech, Nippon Denso and Toyo Denso. Honda 7 motorcycles are by far the largest selling motorcycles in the country with an unmatched reputation for high quality, reliability and after-sales-service.

All about Atlas Honda:

Atlas has undertaken to develop local manufacturing capabilities to the highest, economically feasible level. While a major role in localization has been assigned to vendor industries, Atlas has the countrys largest in-house manufacturing capability at its Karachi and Sheikhupura plants. To support the production facilities, the company has established an R&D wing and tool making facilities through CDA & CAM, which are growing rapidly in size and function as the company expands. Atlas has managed to execute 14 Joint Venture/Technical Assistance Agreements between local vendors and foreign manufacturers for transfer of technology. Besides, Atlas has

directly executed 5 Joint Venture/Technical Assistance Agreements other than Honda. Atlas management is striving to modernize company operations by adapting applicable aspects of research and theory and more specifically, Hondas unique philosophy of hard/soft technologies to the realities of Pakistani conditions. Company management structure, systems and processes are 8 changed according to the demands of the customer, growth and new technology. Efforts are being made to develop participation at all levels of personnel in decision-making and a substantial and effective delegation has been established at levels where applicable. Various participation programs such as Ala Mayar Quality Circles movement, launched in 1985, are strongly encouraged to allow constructive self-expression and teamwork. The Company training and development programs encourage all members to develop themselves and contribute to their full potential. Currently, there are 2 plants working day and night to meet the demand of motorbike in Pakistan. These plants are located in Sheikhupura and Karachi. The head office is located at Karachi. Sheikhupura plant manufactures all 4 models while Karachi plant only prepares 1 model. SKP Plant comprises of 500K plant (Frame & engine assy), HI TECH (Engine Plant), Casting Plant and manufacturing Plant. Daily motorcycle production is 1325 units comprising 4 models. Presently, Atlas Honda has to compete with 51 companies in the market. Despite of such tough competition, Atlas Honda has 65.7 percent share in the total sales in Pakistan. This has only been achieved by maintaining tough standards in quality. 9 Further, motorbikes are also exported in limited quantity to Bangladesh. With market share of worth more than 65.7%, Atlas Honda is one of the leading automobile manufacturers of Pakistan. The turn over here is less than 3 percent which is very less as compared to other industries who expect 10 percent turn over per year. The company has 307 dealers nationwide, who are responsible for the sales of motorbikes. Further, there are 6400 service dealers throughout the country, who are providing services of repairing to the customers. They are also responsible for the sale of spare parts. In this way, directly or indirectly, Atlas Honda is creating job opportunities for almost 25,000 people. Atlas Honda is playing a pioneering role in creating conditions for easy and confident use of motorcycles all over the country. A vast and growing network of over 1600 motorcycles sales service and spare parts dealers has been established. In order to back up this system, Atlas has set up Technical Training Centers in Karachi and Lahore, which provide several courses of varying duration and complexity for motorcycle mechanics and users each year. M 5 (five) S Methodology:
This is a Japanese term use to determine quality of work done in Honda and about environment how environment changes the mood and quality work of a person in any organization. 5 (five) S are Seiri (sort out). Going through all the tools, materials, etc. in the plant and work area and keeping only essential items. Everything else is stored or discarded. Seiton (put in order) 14 Focuses on efficiency. When we translate this to "Straighten or Set in Order", it sounds like more sorting or sweeping, but the intent is to arrange the tools, equipment and parts in a manner that promotes work flow. For example, tools and equipment should be kept where they will be used (i.e. straighten the flow path), and the process should be set in an order that maximizes efficiency. For every thing there should be place and everything should be in its place. (Demarcation and labeling of place.) Seisou (cleanliness) Systematic Cleaning or the need to keep the workplace clean as well as neat. At the end of each shift, the work area is cleaned up and everything is restored to its place. This makes it easy to know what goes where and have confidence that everything is where it should be. The key point is that maintaining cleanliness should be part of the daily work - not an occasional activity initiated when things get too messy. Seiketsu (neat and tidy) Standardized work practices or operating in a consistent and standardized fashion. Everyone knows exactly what his or her responsibilities are to keep above 3S's. 15 Shitsuke (discipline) Refers to maintaining and reviewing standards. Once the previous 4S's have been established, they become the new way to operate. Maintain the focus on this new way of operating, and do not allow a gradual decline back to the old ways of operating. However, when an issue arises such as a suggested improvement, a new way of working, a new tool or a new output requirement, then a review of the first 4S's is appropriate.

But Honda produces motorbikes according to the market demand and customer demand, because of this reason their plant always operates under capacity. 28 Atlas Honda planned to produce 400,000 units of motorbike during the current fiscal year that is 2006-07. But they are expecting to achieve 350,000 units of motorbikes during the current fiscal year. Atlas Honda is using both push as well as pull system. Push system is use before assembly plant. Pull system is used after they assemble the required units and supply their motorbikes to their dealers so that dealer could fulfill the customers demand.

Paint shop In paint shop nearly 110 parts of motorbikes are being painted at present. 3. Buffing Buffing shop used to buffer 35 components of motorbike 4. Alternative Current generation This department works on electric works in a

motorbike from engine wiring to ignition switch and light 5. Drum Gear Shift This shop works on all work related to gear and chain 6. Drum Gear Shop This department used to work on drums on front as well as rear drum 7. Machine Shop In this department all the extra machine work is done 31 8. Fuel Cope Fuel tank and other material related to fuel e.g. filter and carburetor are assembling here. 9. Die casting In this department chrome of metal parts done by Honda by own. 10. Engine Assembling In this shop engine is assemble in proper form to fit into chassis or frame 11. Wielding All the necessary wielding are done here regarding frame etc 12. Ignition Coil Shop This shop related to work on ignition coil, which is right beside engine to produce electric for engine and light 13. Switch Assembling Where switch of motorbike made and assemble in complete form 32 14. Engine Machine Assembling Here engine is attached to frame and check whether is working fine or not. Ensures the provision & dispatches of required parts to SKP & KHI plant, spares part division & vendors. RM Store RM store are those store where they store those parts which is in the raw form like the steel sheet for making the body tank, rear brake front, and many other part which they take from the local supplier and convert into the finished formed and the capacity of this store is almost same as CKD Store. Handling Techniques: At AHL, following handling techniques are used: For handling from shop to shop especially designed trolleys, bins and pallets are used. Imported motorcycle components are received in steel & wooden cases & pallets. Local vendor parts are received from receiving section in standard carton boxes. 36
