Becoming Exceptional Teachers

The Problem

Medical / Teaching = Ability Knowledge

Vision Three responses by the construction workers: Im mixing concrete. Im working so I can eat and have money to live on. Putting down his shovel and wiping his hands on his shirt, Let me show you over heres going to be the school where children will learn how to read and write theyre the foundation for our future so we need to provide a good place for them to learn. If you want to build a ship, dont tell people to gather wood. Rather create in them a hunger to explore the sea.

Attributes, Attitudes, Knowledge & Skills Think of the qualities of your best teachers. What made them exceptional?

Collaborative Teaching
The best health care is collaborative, involving partnerships between clinicians and patients, and "clinicians are most likely to act collaboratively if they have been treated collaboratively while being educated" What are the characteristics of collaborative education? Just as in collaboration with patients, collaboration with students involves working in partnership with them to assess their learning needs, establish goals, decide on a plan of action, and monitor and assess progress. This is preferable to an authoritarian teacher-learner relationship in which the teacher takes sole responsibility for these tasks and students are seen merely as recipients of teaching. In collaborative education, the relationship between preceptor and student mirrors the partner relationship between clinician and patient. The advantages of collaborative teaching are several. Collaborative teaching helps students become self- directed, lifelong learners who can take the initiative to identify their learning needs, choose and use resources, practice new skills, and seek feedback on their performance from peers. This is essential in today's health care environment, in which new information and technology are mushrooming. In addition, a collaborative approach can better prepare students to work with colleagues and members of the health care team, presumably resulting in higher quality, more comprehensive, and more affordable health care. Attributes and Attitudes of Effective Clinical Teachers An ability to handleand even thrive inthe messy world of clinical teaching. Enjoyment of and respect for people. Interest in and commitment to helping patients and students. The capacity to work collaboratively with others. Sensitivity to the subtleties of human functioning, particularly the dynamics involved in patient care and teaching. Enthusiasm about professional practice and teaching and the capability to convey that enthusiasm. Enjoyment of learning. Capacity to be reflective about what they do as a clinician and teacher and admit their limitations. Adaptability and openness to challenges in the way they do things. Willingness to make needed changes. Ability to deal constructively with ambiguity and uncertainty. Ability and willingness to practice what they preach. Knowledge and Skills of Effective Clinical Teachers A good understanding of the knowledge and skills they are expected to teach. This involves knowing the subject from the point of view of the learner. Clinical competence and the ability to demonstrate this competence to learners. Establishing clinical credibility is a critical factor in teaching effectiveness. Instructional competence: Knowing and applying principles and strategies of effective teaching. Effective communication skills. A capacity for communicating well rests on active listening, developing trusting relationships, and conveying information clearly, engagingly, and constructively.

Becoming Exceptional Teachers

The Problem We all want to be good teachers, but never had a chance to learn to teach. Just because were good doctors doesnt mean were good teachers. So we need a chance to develop our skills. Have you ever seen someone who doesnt know how to swim try to swim? What happens? A tremendous waste of energy! The same happens with us when we dont know how to teach, we waste a tremendous amount of energy. Energy we dont have! But we can save energy if know what were doing. Vision If I walked on a construction site and asked one worker what hes doing, he might say, Im mixing concrete. Another man might say, Im working so I can eat and have money to live on. And another might put down his shovel, wipe his hands on his shirt, and say, Let me show you over heres going to be the school where children will learn how to read and write theyre the foundation for our future so we need to provide a good place for them to learn. If I walked into the hospital and asked people what theyre doing, one might say, Im a doctor. Im treating patients. Another might say, Im working so I can eat and have money to live on. But others, I hope, will say, Where giving people hope. We want these kids to live healthy lives, to understand how others can be healthy, to grow to be the future of Cambodia. If you want to build a ship, dont tell people to gather wood. Rather create in them a hunger to explore the sea. As teachers, we need to have the right vision the right motivation for what we do. The students will pick up on this. And we set that vision before them and help them attain it. What makes good teachers? Not knowledge, but encouragement toward that vision. Attributes, Attitudes, Knowledge & Skills Think of the qualities of your best teachers. What made them exceptional? Desire to learn, Being role model of curiosity Knowledgeable Compassion for patients Good communicators, able to explain Understanding level of student development Allow students to help teacher and help each other encourage them to participate in learning process. So we will look at each of these areas and develop an approach to each one so that we can intentionally pass these values, these characteristics on to our students.
