FALCON HEAD GOLF CLUB OPENS RESTAURANT

Soft opening held today, Saturday; open for regular business Monday BIG RAPIDS Since purchasing Falcon Head Golf Club 10 years ago, Tim and Kim Dawkins have focused on a few aspects of their business at a time. Now the couple is ready to take on their newest endeavor. Today and Saturday the facility will hold the soft opening of its new restaurant, Greens Edge. The soft opening will offer two seating times, with one starting at 6 p.m. and another at 7:30 p.m. Invitations for the opening have been distributed, however, anyone who wishes to attend can contact Phil Moreno, food and beverage manager, at (231) 796-2614 for an invitation. The Dawkins began working on the restaurant during the winter. Through their years of ownership, the couple felt they had successfully ran the golf course and banquets and were ready for a new project. I feel like it is time. We just want to move forward and go on to the next step and put one more choice in Big Rapids that isnt just a chain, Kim said. I really wanted to do it when we rst got here, but we felt like we needed to focus on the two other entities meaning the banquets and the golf course itself rst. The dinning room of the restaurant will be in the area where the Rotary Club of Big Rapids meets. It also includes a deck and bar. Between the dinning room, bar and deck, Moreno estimates the restaurant can hold roughly 200 patrons. Moreno describes the Greens Edges menu as casual dining, or upscale pub food. The restaurant will feature locallysourced food and handmade items as much as possible, Moreno said. I think we can ll a hole between the fast food places and the chains, Moreno said. We can adapt more quickly to what the clientele wants. Chains are told from corporate what to do. Where if I have a customer that comes in and wants something specic, within two days I can have it on the menu or have a special that correlates to that. Moreno was hired at the golf club in April. Within a week, construction began on the new restaurant. The facility received a facelift with a new entranceway, paint, seating, tables and televisions. The restaurant also built a smoker on premise to serve barbecue dishes like ribs, brisket and pulled pork.

Although Moreno would not discuss the restaurants nancial investment, he did say he has hired 15 new staff members and might add more positions. The biggest challenge facing the restaurant will be showing customers the facility isnt just a golf course with the typical food offered on golf courses, Moreno said. He wants to create dinner and golf specials, and the bar will have a sports bar atmosphere to attract golfs after a game. After the soft opening, the restaurant will be open during its normal summer hours from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Although if customers are enjoying themselves and want to stay later, the restaurant will accommodate them, Moreno said. Unlike the golf course, Greens Edge will be open yearround. For more information about Greens Edge, contact the golf club at (231) 7962614.

The safest place is in the bathroom in the middle of a tile oor or on a wooden luggage rack after it has been thoroughly inspected. * When you return home, vacuum your suitcase thoroughly before bringing it indoors and storing it away. * Wash and dry all of your clothes -even those items you havent worn -- on hot cycles to remove any bed bugs or eggs that may have traveled home with you. HOW TRAVELERS CAN AVOID COZYING UP TO BED BUGS

(NewsUSA) - Bed bugs are a year-round problem, but if youre gearing up for travel or vacation -- you may be at an increased risk of bringing these most unwanted souvenirs home. A 2011 national survey of pest professionals conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) found that a whopping 99 percent of respondents encountered bed bug infestations in that year, and 80 percent encountered bed bugs specically in hotels and motels. And since bed bugs remain the hardest pest to treat, infestations can easily grow out of control. Increased public awareness, education and vigilance are key in detecting and preventing bed bug infestations as these pests tend to travel undetected from place to place, breed quickly and remain one of the most challenging to treat, says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. Bed bugs are equal-opportunity pests and are not a result of poor sanitation. So whether youre staying at a motel or ve-star hotel, check your surroundings. To reduce the risk of cozying up to these pests, remember the following expert advice while youre traveling. * Thoroughly inspect the room with a ashlight before unpacking, including behind the headboard, under lamps,

MATH COUNTS: HOW TO RAISE AN INDEPENDENT LEARNER

(NewsUSA) - Did you know success in mathematics has been linked to success in college and future careers? Simply stated, math counts when it comes to a bright future. To mark the importance of math, Sylvan Learning is offering tips to help all students excel in mathematics education and become independent learners. The deluge of data that children encounter in their daily lives makes it even more important that they build strong math and statistics skills, says Dr. Richard Bavaria, senior vice president for education outreach for Sylvan Learning. Good skills in math and statistics can equip your child with the ability to discern valid data from misleading data, and to make intelligent decisions based on factual data, Bavaria added. Here are some helpful tips that parents can use to bridge the gap between fear of math and the essential world of numbers: VALIDATE IT: Dont be a parent who says, I was never good at math. It only sends the wrong message that math is hard and it has null value. Instead, stress that math is something that has to

THINK WEVE LOST OUR MOJO? THINK AGAIN

(NewsUSA) - Lets play a game. Number of years it took to create the entire transcontinental railroad, which conquered mountains and deserts in opening the West to settlers back in the 1860s: 7. Number of years it took to complete Bostons infamous Big Dig highway project, which opened ofcials to cries of boondoggle as cost over-runs and design aws mounted: 16. No, this isnt another story about how Americas lost its mojo. In fact, the same company that laid hundreds of miles of those railroad tracks, Union Pacic, is celebrating its 150th anniversary, and -- while the public may accept politics-asusual from their leaders -- you dont stay in business that long without consistently excelling.

everyones radar screen. Practically everything that touches our daily lives moves on a train, says president and CEO Jack Koraleski. That includes grains and produce to feed families, concrete for roads, lumber to build homes, and chemicals to make our water safe for drinking. This year alone, Union Pacic (www. up.com) will invest a record $3.6 billion in infrastructure -- so taxpayers dont have to, as Koraleski notes -- and hire about 4,000 workers to help U.S. industries transport their products both domestically and globally. Part of that investment is to meet the huge demand, here and elsewhere, for corn and wheat grown by farmers in Iowa and Kansas. (U.S. corn yield alone is expected to exceed 170 bushels per acre by the year 2015.) Another part is to help seamlessly move everything from cars to steel to plastic both to and from Mexico -- the majority of it going south -- which is our biggest trading partner after Canada. And for those wondering what The New Big Thing might be to get the economy booming again, one thing is on almost Shale drilling, its said, is Americas next Gold Rush. And, yes, even as energy analysts go ga-ga predicting all sorts of bonanzas from the new technology thats made it easier to extract fossil fuels from the ground -- Citigroup puts the number of potential new jobs alone at 3.6 million -- good, ol reliable Union Pacic is already busy shipping U.S. crude oil to Gulf Coast reneries short on pipeline capacity. As much as 100,000 carloads of crude by years end, according to the railroads estimates, plus as much as 230,000 carloads of steel pipe and frac sand used for drilling.
IGNITE YOUR INNER ALTER EGO WITH ONLINE GAMING

The chance to redene yourself is the allure of social gaming sites like Sims, Zynga or IMVU -- a three-dimensional platform that allows people to create an avatar, or a graphical representation of their alter ego, dress up, meet new people and play new games like Walk Off. With 80 million registered users, fans around the world say IMVU is leading the pack. The only question left is: Whats your avatar style? Punk: You know that hot pink, pixie haircut you always wanted? Your avatar can rock it without hesitation. What about tattoos and piercings? Your avatar is a blank slate ready to represent any piece of your personality, no matter how large or small. If youre holding back from buying the studded punk boots you always wanted, your avatar can boldly strut your stuff. Goth: Both male and female Goths have plenty of room for creative expression on IMVU. From their hair, makeup, clothing and environment to the kinds of pets they own (dragons, spiders, snakes -- oh my!), users can truly connect with their gothic roots. IMVU even allows users to design their own clothing or furniture to be sold in a virtual catalogue. Some users have proted so much from selling their virtual items

that IMVU represents another source of income for them -- occasionally even primary. Since joining IMVU, I have met tons of new friends and every day look forward to the fun it brings me, said IMVU user Shayne Shiells of San Francisco, Calif. I express myself through fashion, even designing some of my own clothes and accessories to sell on IMVU, and meet friends who have similar interests. Vintage: Vintage lovers probably listen to more vinyls than MP3s and prefer a drive-thru movie over an IMAX-3D blockbuster. Do you scour thrift stores and consignment shops to nd the best vintage clothing? Meet fellow thrifters online, challenge them to games and discover a new universe of vintagefabulous accessories and apparel. Imagine yourself in 40s and 50s apper dresses, polka-dot pumps, Burlesque skirts and gangster pinstripes. Build your avatar at www.imvu.com/catalog/ web_landing.php?p=PRNewsUSA. Social gaming offers endless opportunities for people around the world to connect, make new friends and express themselves, no matter the style of their alter ego.
5 YEAR 100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY ON ALL 2007 AND NEWER VEHICLES

(NewsUSA) - In the world of online gaming and interactive avatars, selfexpression is limitless, providing people a new way to express themselves and escape the mundane. Regular people can abandon their daytime personas to don mohawks and spiked leather jackets as punk rockers. Dog walkers can be rock stars. Busy professionals can check responsibilities at the door and discover life from a different perspective.
